Taking in a Show
Edmund had been in New York for only a short time. Generally he avoided coming here, but when a pretty mob princess offers you a high-paying job to kill the guy who had her father murdered, you make an exception. He hadn't see hide or hair of any potential Hellfire Club agents. Maybe Shaw forgot about him or more likely just didn't care anymore. Edmund decided it was time for some much needed downtime. In jeans, t-shirt, and leather vest, he looked like just another biker as he walked up to the entrance to the dance club.

"Looks promising," He said to himself as he made his way in. A smile practically split his face as he caught sight of the dancers on stage. "Oh yeah, definitely promising." He pays the entry fee and takes a seat at the bar. "I'll have a Pepsi, or Coke if you don't serve it."

"What are you, twelve?" The bartender began to mock before Edmund grabbed him by the collar and brought them face to face.

"Do you have any, or not?"

"Yes sir. Sorry sir."

Edmund let the man go  and turned to take in the show.

Minnie was having a little exchange of her own between numbers, as the guy handling the sound system.

"...Stephen Sondheim? You want to dance... to a showtune?"

"Just put it in."

And as he did, Minnie strutted out in a black longcoat and elbow-length gloves, her hips already in action, to 'Ah, but Underneath.'

'..if his idea of ecstasy/'s to see what he expects to see,/ well ignorance is bliss,/ but think of what you miss...' the music played as the coat came off to reveal some rather elegant corsetry.

Many of the audience, if asked to tell you what kind of women they'd like to see dancing in that kind of corsetry, would certainly not have described a tiny dark little thing like Minnie. And yet... most of them seemed to think she carried it quite well.

And as the song continued to describe a woman who'd 'only allow a man to see/ enough to fan his fantasy.' and the various contradictory facades of her personality, more and more articles of clothing were slowly -- so very slowly -- shed around each perfect, graceful step as she illustrated a more ...literal flexibility.

By the time the performance reached the climax of 'sometimes when the wrappings fall/there's nothing underneath at all,' she had nailed it, and she quite cheerfully knew it.

"Wow. Talk about great things come in small packages." He took several sips of his Pepsi as he watched the dancing woman. She was beautiful, though maybe HAWT would be a more appropriate description. Still, there was something about her. A slight hint in her movements that implied something else. He'd seen it before in women like Frost and Selene when his dad took him to visit the Hellfire Club. This woman gave off an aura of danger. Despite himself, he was intrigued.

Minnie's eyes caught the big young teetotaler practically glistening among the other patrons. Not the loveliest pattern she'd ever seen, of course, but very nice all the same. She shot him a particular smile and looked for whim when she was done dancing and came out in a certain amount of clothes. There was, at least, cloth involved, strategically placed, and her favorite stiletto boots. She circled his general vicinity carefully.

'Oh boy,' Edmund thought to himself. 'Either I'm real lucky or in deep shit. She was either showing genuine interest of some kind or she was closing on a mark. And not the kind of mark strippers conned out of cash either. He'd be ready, but on the other there were certainly worse things to see before you die.

"You've got some serious talent, miss. Buy you a drink?"

Minnie smiles up -- and up, and up -- at him. "Thank you. Latverian peach brandy, please?"

Edmund nodded at the cowed bartender to confirm the order.

"You don't settle for the cheap stuff, do you?" He wasn't complaining, he could certainly afford to splurge once in awhile.

A throaty contralto chuckle. "I've been spoiled by generous friends and employers. You seem to be doing pretty well for yourself." She leans in. "I'm Minnie."

"I do okay. Can't complain, well not about money at anyway." As he leaned closer, Edmund thought: 'Okay Edmund, watch yourself, you still don't know where this lady's coming from. Don't think with the wrong organ. "Edmund, friends call me Ed. I suppose you can tell too." He smiles a bit. "Minnie? That's a pretty name."

She smiles as she just barely brushes against him. He doesn't appear to be armed. That's good. Nice to be safe about some things. "Thank you. Edmund's a nice name, too. Well, Ed, you know a little bit about how I earn my living. Do I get to hear a little about yours?"

He feels the slight touch. 'Ok, that was way too subtle to just be a flirting move.'

"I remove potenital problems for people who can afford it." He didn't say anything else for the moment. He was ready at a moment's notice if he saw anything shiny that could be a knife or other weapon.

"Oh, troubleshooting. That must be a very interesting and rewarding job. You wouldn't imagine the amount of trouble my employer has to deal with sometimes. Sometimes he has to hire people for it. He's good at affording things, I'm sure. He treats me so well. But I shouldn't bore you with business talk without at least giving you a performance in the private room." She whispers just loud enough for him to hear, "I promise you can search me as soon as we're alone."

'Damn this woman really knows to turn on the charm.' If he wasn't mistaken that sounded an awful lot like a business proposal. Business and pleasure? Who'd have thought that.

"Well how I can refuse a tempting offer like that. Lead the way." He really hoped she wasn't going to try and murder him. He'd regret it if he had to kill her.

And she does, with quite the sashay for such relatively small legs. Once they enter the private room and the door closes behind them, she does immediately put her hands on the wall and spread-eagle herself against it -- albeit with more slow grace and elegance than people normally submit themselves to search. "A promise is a promise, Ed."

Edmund raises an eyebrow at her posture for a second before the professional in him kicks in. He pats around the woman's legs, long enough to notice that they were lean and well-muscled, but nothing concealed. He used his hands to scan around her waist as he made sure nothing was there, perhaps a little longer than necessary, but too not long. 'Damn. She may be small, but's she's built!' He quickly sifted a hand though her hair.

"Sorry, a waitress in a Chinese restaurant once had a very thin knife-like thing in her hair. Nearly took my eye out. You don't have a breast-knife on you, do you?"

She turns around and shows him the complete absence of a bodice dagger. "There we go. Fair and square. Do you have a lot of experience, Ed?"

"I'd like to think so. I've been doing this sort of thing for awhile. Solved my first problem before I reached drinking age." He took a quick glance down the bodice. Just to make sure of course.

"Any formal training I could check up on?" She starts stalking across the little room, hips getting into it. She can still hear music, after all; it's practically instinct. "I'll certainly need some form of contact information for you, at least. This isn't some a-la-carte contract work here. I've been assigned a fairly important recruiting investigation." Backbends, Minnie? Really?

"Afraid not. For the most part I'm self taught. Though Pop hired instructors to get me started. Plus he taught me a few things himself." He's almost hypnotized by her movements. Almost. "I see. I use a tour website as a cover. A prospective client would have to know the right name and password to contact me. May I ask for who?"

Edmund raises his hand, suddenly the glove dropped down with the force of a heavy stone, even making an indent in the floor.

"I can increase the mass of any object or person with 320 feet in my line of sight." He looks up at Minnie. "I supose you can guess who my dad was now." He was ready to fight if need be, he would not let Shaw take him down.

He notes her expression when she claims no knowledge. Not only had the bastard Shaw taken his legacy, but now it seemed he purposely buried his father's. Oh how there'd be hell to pay. He lowers his hand.

"Sorry. There are certain..individuals in this city who'd like to see me dead. It tends to make me a little paranoid." He sits in a nearby chair, elbows resting on his knees. "So who wants what done?"

"That's a perfectly understandable reaction to that kind of professional hazard. Unfortunately, my employer has it, too. He doesn't want to disclose his name this early in the process of doing business, but he's willing to put you on retainer if you're up for the jobs he has to do. The first... let's a call it a diagnostic job -- would be next week, and you would be paid more than the going rate if all stipulations are fulfilled."

"Both. That's the lesson: sometimes you don't get a second chance. It's admittedly a more useful lesson for other people. But the point is to have fewer purveyors in collateral damage getting by by bribing cops, in general. I can give you name, locations, movements, and description through your site, if you'll give me the contact info."

"I may wait a bit to wash this spot." Edmund stood up. "You know how to contact me now so I'll be waiting." Before he exits, he turns back for a second, a teasing smile on his face. "I don't suppose if I excell with flying colors I could get a real dance next time?"
