"No!" She groaned as she realized that Hunter must have meant that she had shown up at the dance. No wonder Professor Sato wanted to see her now. She must have been practically falling over herself by the time she had shown up to the dance, especially if she couldn't even remember leaving her room. What Hunter told her next made her want to cry, she could feel a sharp pain in her chest that caused her to curl in on herself a little. "No, no, no, no, no!" She chanted, her head in her hands. She had ruined everything, had shown up to homecoming and made a huge scene, and she had done it to the one person in the world that she had let in. She had screamed at her, something that her sober self could never imagine doing. Tatum was just so small, so fragile, how could she have done something like this?
Mackenzie was up off her bed and grabbing Hunter by her shoulders faster than she had ran for the bathroom. She could feel her stomach plummeting with dread. It had to have been bad if Hunter was telling her it was "kinda harsh". Hunter, who was the least tactful person she knew, was telling her that she had torn Tatum apart. Not only just screamed at her, but in front of most of the school. Mackenzie knew how much the little redhead hated attention, especially in a big group. She had really fucked up, had let her emotions get the best of her, and now here she was. She had probably ruined the only worth while relationship she would ever allow herself to have. She felt so stupid, she hated that the redhead could illicit such emotion in her. She had been so angry that Tatum wouldn't go to homecoming with her. So upset that she wanted the other girl so badly, that she couldn't get over her. She wanted so badly to be able to brush this whole thing off like every other girl she had ever gone after. She loved Tatum, and the girl just kept pushing her away. Mackenzie wasn't used to not getting what she wanted, and so she had turned to sulking. Just like the little kid that she was inside, she had sulked, drank and from the sound of it threw a tantrum. She needed to fix this, because if she didn't have Tatum, she didn't know what she would do. She looked the taller girl desperately, the look in her eyes begging her to tell her it wasn't true. "No," she repeated again. She was almost afraid to ask the next question, "W-what did I say to her? How bad was it Hunt? I have to know."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah! You really did," Hunter assured her friend rather grimly, but trying to keep up a hint of a smile. When Mack grabbed hold of her, she looked seriously at the shorter blonde as she panicked. She had known even last night that when the other girl sobered up, she would regret what she had done. But there was no changing that now, it was over and finished and whatever damage was done had already happened.
She could easily pick up on the emotion raging behind her best friend's usually calm exterior; it was beginning to crack a little bit, and it made her uncomfortable, like a voyeur or something. Mack was usually so composed, nothing phased her, nothing matter, but this girl did something to her. It was so out of her usual comfort zone, girls and falling in love, and Hunter felt even more absurd knowing that she knew how Mack felt. There was no way she could imagine how bad she'd feel if she had gotten in Michi's face the way that Mack had done to Tatum. But then again, Michi would never jerk her around like the little redhead was doing to her best friend every day. Sighing heavily, Hunter reached over her friend's arms and gripped Mack's shoulders instead. "I dunno, man. It was a lot of shit.. sayin' oh wouldn't her parents love this, talkin' shit about her boyfriend.. she didn't like that, neither did he I don't think. Makin' fun of their stupid little band, y'know. You were mad, I don't blame ya. She didn't even cry till ya made the crack 'bout her dad," the taller blonde explained, glancing away for a second. "And the part where you.. uh, y'know, said you loved her. We got you outta there a few seconds too late to avoid that one. And damn yer loud when ya drink.."
"Fuck!" Mack yelled, burying her head in her hands, but staying close enough to Hunter that the girl's hands remained on her shoulders. She almost wanted to fall apart on the taller girl, wanted to cry on her. Things didn't work that way between them, but Mackenzie could feel herself about to come undone. She had not only screamed at the other girl, caused a scene in front of the whole school, but she had made her cry. Mackenzie was pretty sure that she could never forgive herself for that, and she was glad that she couldn't remember what it had looked like. Leaning against Hunter awkwardly, she tried to calm her panic.
Tatum must surely hate her for real now, there was no way that the redhead could feel otherwise. Mack had worked so hard to shove her foot in the door, had done so many things that she wouldn't have done for anyone else. Now everything was ruined, plus the whole school had witnessed her downfall. There was no way that her reputation would be intact after this. She might as well just never leave her room again, there was no point. Scrubbing furiously at her face, she looked up at Hunter again. "I told her I loved her?" She asked quietly, her voice cracking slightly. She was sure that everyone who had been present at the dance had probably heard the whole thing. It was going to be a nightmare to clean up. "My life is over," Mackenzie groaned, and buried her face into Hunter's shoulder again. It was still just as awkward as before but it was slightly comforting. Hunter was familiar, smelled like she always did, would probably shove her off any second just like she always did, it wasn't something that had changed. Unlike everything else in her life. Mackenzie Dubinsky didn't fall for anyone, she didn't feel bad for making them cry and she definitely didn't drink herself stupid to try and make herself feel better. Shooting away from Hunter as if she had burned her, she clenched her hand into a fist and slammed it into her dresser. "I fucking ruined everything!" She yelled angrily, running agitated hands through her hair. "What the fuck is wrong with me?" She paced back and forth muttering angrily to herself for several moments before turning to Hunter again and fixing her with a serious look. "What the hell am I supposed to do?" She asked, desperation creeping into her voice. "I need to fix this Hunter. I...I have to do something to fix this! Please," she begged, looking at the floor. "I don't know what the fuck is happening anymore."
Once Mack leaned into her, as awkward as it was for the two of them, Hunter immediately clapped her best friend hard on her back. She sighed heavily at the shorter girl's question. "Yeah, man. You did. But you were real fierce 'bout it, made ya seem.. I dunno, kinda hard. Like ya weren't all sappy 'bout it, you really shouted 'bout it!"
Hitting the other blonde on the back again, Hunter shook her head. "It ain't over, it ain't over, c'mon now! I told you, drama and all that crap circulates 'round here faster than.. I dunno, somethin' fast. They'll forget it even happened, especially to a kid like that. She'll go hide under a rock for a few hours, everybody will forget she was even alive, jus' like before! Jus' like you till ya jus'.. fell in love with her all of a sudden, I guess," the other girl offered weakly, shrugging her own shoulders. Letting Mack go free as soon as she jerked away, Hunter just watched her friend pacing with a weak crooked smile. "C'mon, you didn't ruin it. Ain't girls supposed to like when you treat 'em bad? I heard that before," she tried to assure her friend, still with that weak smile. "You can fix it, hoss. Don't you worry your little head.. hey, c'mon! I got an idea! Got an idea!" Finally, the taller blonde jumped up from the floor and moved over to sit on the edge of Mack's bed. Reaching into the front of her dress again, she pulled out her cellphone and was already furiously sending out a text. "I'm callin' in the secret weapon."
Mackenzie resisted the urge to groan again as Hunter vaguely filled her in on how she had actually told Tatum those three little words. Despite the insensitive front that the blonde put up, she was a romantic deep down. She had always secretly wanted to confess her love in an epic display of romanticism, but now, that was ruined as well. "Shouting about it", as Hunter put it, probably wasn't on most girl's list of ways they wanted to be wooed.
She wanted to protest what the taller blond was saying about drama, because while it was true, that didn't mean that Tatum would get over it so quickly. She knew how much social anxiety the other girl had, knew that even if everyone had already forgotten about it that she would probably worry that they hadn't. Mackenzie might as well have outed her in front of the entire school too, she was sure that there would be ugly rumors that would surface. Mackenzie Dubinsky wasn't the type to fall for someone, everyone knew that, and now they would all be speculating on how Tatum had done it. How had some small first year university student managed to tame the Mack Daddy? Mackenzie supposed that she felt a little bit better when Hunter reassured her of her ability to fix things. Perhaps she was right, it would be hard, but the blonde new that for Tatum, any amount of effort was worth it. What worried the blonde now was the way that Hunter was madly typing out a message on her phone. "What do you mean 'secret weapon'?" She asked skeptically, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.
"What d'you think I mean by 'secret weapon'? Who else could it damn well be?" Hunter replied, looking up at Mack and cocking an eyebrow at her friend. "I'm callin' in li'l sister and don't you be surprised if she tears a real strip offa you.. she sure was fuck wasn't impressed with your ass last night, lemme tell ya. One hell of a hot mess," the taller blonde explained, finishing with her phone and tucking it away again.
"She ain't gonna kill you or nothin' though, don't gotta look at me like yer gonna shit your drawers," she teased. "She just wants to talk to you 'bout how you're doin' this thing all wrong. And probably tell ya what to say to Sato to get your sentence reduced. I'm sure she got it all planned out, the girl is all plans.. we wanted me to let her know when ya woke up to the world anyway. Probably she'll be over here in a bit, if her head ain't totally buried in the muff at the moment.. probably is, li'l dirtball."
Groaning once again, Mack only flopped back on her bed and burrowed under the blanket. The darkness was a welcoming change from the head splitting light in the room, and her searing headache subsided a bit. She was slightly afraid for Sera to show up, mainly because the girl had a sharp tongue and Mackenzie knew that Hunter was one hundred percent right. Sera was probably not impressed at all by her little stunt, and would have no problem telling her off. As much as Mackenzie loved this quality about the girl, she just didn't know if her poor head could take the lecture that she assumed was coming.
"She is a lil' dirtball," she snorted from under her blanket, muffled by it. "You taught her every thing she knows though, so it's really your fault." Sitting up and poking her head out of the blanket, she sat up and wrapped the blanket around her so only her face was visible. "How bad d'ya think Sato's going to give it to me? He must be shocked it's just me this time, you're usually the one causing most of the trouble." She worried her bottom lip as she thought about the possible consequences. Normally, she wouldn't have give a crap about what detention he cooked up for them, he was a big softy on the inside. Mack was almost positive that he favored the two of them, even if they were always in his hair. Showing up black out drunk to a school function when she was underage was more than just blowing up the girl's toilets to create a distraction. It was actually against the law, and while she was pretty sure they had broken the law more times than they could count, this was a bit different than those times. She only hoped Sera had a plan, for everything.
After helping Hunter get Mack back to her room Sera had crashed in Jenny's room. And that's exactly what they did- crash. Not exactly how she planned to spend homecoming but by the time they finally got there she was exhausted, or just drained, she wasn't quite sure which. What she was sure of though was that unfortunately it probably wasn't over. Part of her was still in shock at how Mack had acted, and knowing her friend she was sure Mack be just as shocked herself once she remembered everything and wanted to fix it.
Naturally, Sera had already started to give it some thought, even if she was fairly certain it was going to take a great deal for the blonde to get back into her sister's good graces. When the brunette reached for her phone setting next to Jenny's bed, where she was laying reading over her notes Defense against the Dark Arts theory, she wasn't at all surprised to see it was Hunter. She was expecting to hear from the blond at some point once Mack was up and conscious. She made her way into Mack's room, and she didn't bother to knock, they were expecting her. She scrunched her face up, looking pretty disgusted as she made her way inside, the whole room sort of reeked like vomit. At least now she was pretty sure the blonde had gotten all the alcohol out of her system. She made her way over to the side of the bed, sauntering up next to Mack. She wanted to be mad at her, honestly she wanted to scream in the older girl's face, but it wouldn't really make Tatum feel any better and she was sure her friend was feeling bag enough if she remembered all she had done. Still there was no way she was just going to let blonde off without hearing her bit, but it could at least wait a few minutes. She reached into her bag, pulling out a bottle of aspirin. The brunette unscrewed the top and took a seat on the bed, scooting up closer by Mack. "Here, you look like shit, take these," she handed over two pills and handed the blonde a bottle of water from her bag. "Drink this too, you're going to get dehydrated if you don't get some proper liquids into you." Getting off the bed, she scurried off towards the bathroom, pulling out her wand with one hand and grasping her nose with the other. She gave her arm a few good swishes, the end of her wand emitting a few light sparks. She stepped back, placing her wand back in her pocket. That was much better, the small bathroom was practically gleaming with clean now. And it definitely smelled a whole lot better.
Hunter kept in her same position on the edge of the bed as Sera came into the room to join them. She had been half expecting the brunette to start tearing into Mack straight away, but she wasn't entirely surprised when the younger girl took charge of taking care of Mack first. Oh yeah, aspirin.. she probably should have thought of that. Smiling sheepishly, she watched Sera storm off to clean the bathroom, and quickly turned back to Mack.
"See? I told you, the secret weapon. I told ya," the taller blonde stated in a mock-whisper, eyebrows waggling. She was silently glad that Sera was handling the washroom. Puke was a necessary part of drinking, but other people throwing up was always way grosser than her own. "She must really love y'all, cleanin' up yer can. C'mon."
When Sera walked in, Mack half expected her to start yelling in her face, it was what Mack would have done. She supposed that was what got them in this whole mess though, and was extremely grateful that instead of screaming at her, Sera plopped down next to her. She was relieved, because she was pretty sure she couldn't handle anything loud right now. She glanced at the other girl warily, waiting to see what exactly she was going to do.
She almost cried when Sera gave her the aspirin and water bottle, popping both pills obediently in her mouth. Before she could thank the younger girl though, she was up again and cleaning up the mess that Mack had left in the bathroom. Feeling heavily embarrassed, she ducked her head in shame as Hunter waggled her eyebrows at her. "Until she turns around and gives me the lecture," Mack muttered at Hunter. She took another sip of water, her stomach feeling slightly better now. She really hoped the aspirin would kick in soon, she wasn't sure how much longer she could deal with her head splitting. When she saw that Sera was done with the bathroom, she looked up at her hesitantly. While she knew that Sera wasn't going to fly off the handle at her, she was still afraid of what the girl was going to say. "Thank's Ser," She said quietly, taking another sip of water and trying to offer her a weak smile. "I'm...I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to do any of it, honest. I...I was just upset." She didn't really know what else to say, it was hard enough for her to force that much out.
Sera settled herself back on the end of the blond's bed, crossing her legs in front of her, she dropped her bag to the floor and just kind of looked up at Mack only half smiling. She really wasn't sure what she wanted to say, or how. She nodded at Mack's apology, still smiling, trying to figure what she wanted to start with. On the one hand, she was mad, she might pick on Tatum about her sexuality but she would never have screamed about it like that in front of everybody. But on the other, she was pretty sure Mack, in normal circumstances, wouldn't have either. In fact she was positive.
"It's okay, I know you didn't." She smiled weakly at blond. "I know you didn't mean to but you were still completely out of line, regardless. I don't blame Tatum if she takes a while to talk to you. And it could take a lot.. I mean, I was pissed, I still am to some extant, it obviously never should have happened, but not nearly as pissed as I think Tatum probably is right now. And Sam too.. I'd imagine." After dragging Mack out of the dance, Sera had been running a number of choice words through her head that she wanted to say to the blond when she sobered up but seeing her so upset, and exhausted and obviously sorry, Sera couldn't bring herself to really let her friend have it. She was opinionated and upset herself, yes, but not a complete monster. "Not to mention Sato. Have you heard anything this morning yet? You should actually thank Hunter I think, she might have actually smoothed things over a bit. Still, the teachers didn't seem very impressed."
Hunter stayed on her own perch on the edge of the bed, nodding along contentedly until Sera suggested that Mack thank her. It was true, but Sera so rarely gave Hunter the validation she tried to bug out of the younger girl. The coincidental compliment made the blonde grin widely. "Right? I rock, I did real good.. I know how ta be responsible an' shit when I gotta be," the taller girl half-bragged, waving her hand dismissively at them. "She knows she gotta go to Sato, but we were uh hopin' you had a plan on what to say to 'em.."
Shrugging for a moment, she went on. "I accept thank yous in the form of whiskey and babies-r-us gift cards," she joked, flopping dramatically back onto the bed, half sprawled on top of Mack as she peered up at her friend. "What ya need, boss, is a new strategy.. bein' mean only works for so long." It felt weird, to be the one giving relationship advice, but she supposed it was only right. She never would have voiced it, but she really did want to see Mack as happy as she and Sera were, happy with the right girl. Tatum was kinda weird, in Hunter's opinion. She was a lot of work, and her brother had stolen the athletics while her sister had stolen the brains. She was sort of plain. Hunt didn't see what Mack saw, but if her friend thought Tatum was the right girl and worth all of this drama, Hunter supported her. Even against her own better judgment. "So you tried bein' mean, tried bein' nice, bought her flowers, kissed her, yelled at her, shoved her boyfriend, and still no dice. Jeez Ser, does your sister enjoy anythin' bitches do for her at all? What a damn killjoy. Runs in the family, I guess!" | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
