Mackenzie began to bandage up the other girl's thumb, ignoring her protests. The ointment did burn, she couldn't argue with that at all, but it had to be done. Without Kia there to heal them up, it could get infected if they didn't tend to it correctly. If Hunter got sick, then they'd have to go to the doctors, and then their parents would know all about their secret. She gave the taller girl a slightly apologetic look before squeezing the ointment onto Hunter's thumb. She quickly wrapped a bandaid around it tightly, hoping that the bleeding had slowed enough. If they couldn't get the bleeding to stop, then they would have to go back to the house to get better supplies.
The blonde girl wiped her hands on her pants once she was done, stepping back a bit to inspect her handy work. The bandaid seemed to be okay, there was no blood seeping through anywhere that the blonde could see. "Kia bought them for me before she left," she said grinning. "I guess she thought we might need them." She wished they were just a little bit older, they would be old enough to attend Blue Ridge soon. Only another year before they could use magic to fix the little problems like this. She hoped that Hunter would get a letter too, even though she knew the likely hood of a muggle born being a wizard was low. Her father had always thought Hunter was special, he had taught her to fly with Mackenzie. There had to be something magical about her friend for that to be okay, right? Mackenzie couldn't imagine having to leave someone as important as Hunter behind. "Hey Hunt," she said after a moment of silence. She wasn't sure how to phrase what she wanted to propose to Hunter, it had to do with feelings that they both usually dismissed. Worrying her lower lip with her teeth, she walked over to the window frame, staring out into the trees. "What do you think is going to happen to us when we go away for school? Do you think we'll both stay friends like this?" She couldn't turn around to ask Hunter the next part however, it was too hard to even suggest the possibility that they might have to be apart. "What if you don't get in? I...I don't want to go away without you."
Hunter winced as the ointment touched her thumb, just as she had expected it would, but there was really no fighting her fate. They had no other options, and she would just have to man-up, pout it out, and take what was coming to her. She made a mental note that next time, she would be more careful with the hammer. She watched the bandaid covering her injury, waiting to see if the blood would soak through, and glad when it didn't. "Still think the nails gunna fall off," she murmured, smiling weakly and examining the box of bandaids.
Kia knew them so well. There was no way she would have gone away to school without leaving them covered. They even had a real first aid kit, tucked away in Mack's bedroom, if they ever needed it while she was away. They hadn't so far, thankfully, but it was nice to know it was there. Neither of them were exactly experts with the contents, but Hunter was pretty sure they could figure it out if anything ever went down. Mostly they just hoped that it wouldn't. "She was right," the taller blonde murmured absently, putting the box down and watching as her friend chewed her lip and walked over to stare out of the window. She wasn't sure what the other girl was thinking, but she had a feeling that she would know soon enough. Things just sort of.. came out in the tree house. Things they couldn't talk about or worry about anywhere else. Furrowing her eyebrows at what the other blonde said, Hunter shook her head. "Of course we'll stay friends! Unless you was plannin' on.. like, y'know, ditchin' me or something," she replied confidently, nodding her head in agreement. When Mack questioned whether or not she'd get in, something she had been worrying about for a long time now, Hunter swallowed hard. "Shut up, man.. I'm totally freakin' gunna get in. Your daddy always acted like I would! He wouldn't tell us no lie 'bout school," she assured her friend, scrunching up her face. Adam had always talked as if he was talking to all three of them when he talked about Blue Ridge, Hunter had just always gotten that impression. He had taught them to fly, both of them. He always said there was something special about her, though the blonde mostly thought he was messing with her. He did love to joke and tease them, when he had time. Hopefully what he had seen in her wasn't a joke. "Why lie would he lie 'bout school? School's stupid, even if it ain't regular school! Gunna be kinda cool though," she mused.
"I would never ditch you!" Mackenzie said quickly, whipping around to look at the taller girl. The thought had never crossed her mind, in fact, she was afraid of the other girl ditching her. "I...I was afraid you might ditch me," she admitted quietly, looking at the floor. "I...it's just hard to know what's going to happen. Things change and I don't want to lose you, or whatever."
She felt better when Hunter reassured her, her father had always talked as though both of them would go to school together. Mackenzie had always trusted her father's word, even if he always said he would visit and never did now. She knew that he wouldn't lie to them about something like that, he knew how close the two girl's were. He had always called them twins, because they practically were at this point. Why would her father lie to them both just to get their hopes up? "I don't think he would lie about that," she said finally, nodding along to emphasize her point. "He would never lie to us about that." It made her feel better just to say it out loud, and she stood up a little straighter, more confident now that she was assured of not losing her friend. "We should like, make a pact or something," she said smiling, getting excited about her idea. "Nothin' like, sappy or whatever, but something like, a secret club that's only us, you know?" She stood for a moment in thought, trying to remember all the different movies she had seen where people made a bond with one another forever. "Like, blood brothers!" She said finally, a triumphant grin on her face. "Dad always said we were like twins, we're the only family we've got, right? We might as well make it official!"
"Well, I ain't gunna ditch you neither! Yer just bein' stupid," Hunter scowled, crossing her arms over her chest and being careful of her injured thumb as she did so. Moving over to the small couch Mackenzie had abandoned in favor of the window, the taller blonde flopped down lazily and turned on her side to look closely at her friend as she spoke.
"Right, no way he'd tell a lie 'bout it.. wouldn't even be funny," she agreed quietly. There had definitely been times that Mack's dad had let them down in the past, especially since he had moved out, but she was definitely confident on this one. If Adam said they would go to Blue Ridge together, then they would go. She was sure that when the time came, everything would work out. "Gunna be in Roanoke, right? Jus' like he said!" Furrowing her eyebrows a bit at the suggestion of a pact, Hunter turned over on her back and stared up at the wooden ceiling. It didn't really match, stray boards nailed up to keep out leaks and cracks, and some posters taped up there as well. "This is a secret club, dipshit!" she informed Mack matter-of-factly. "That's why it's a secret club house?" When Mack finally came out with the blood brothers idea, Hunter jolted up into more of a sitting position and less of a lounge. "Blood brothers? Like with.. real blood?" she asked, glancing down to her bandaid wrapped thumb. "Can't we jus' spit on our hands and rub it together, like the Simpsons?"
Mackenzie frowned when Hunter told her she was being stupid, it had been a legitimate fear on the shorter girl's mind. Hunter was outgoing while Mackenzie was more reserved. The taller girl could easily make other friends if she wanted to, it wouldn't be hard for her to leave Mackenzie in the dust. Hunter's words once again reassured the blonde girl though, she felt better about school already.
"Of course we're gonna be in Roanoke!" She said enthusiastically, turning to Hunter and smiling excitedly. "We'll be roommates and everything! You can play your stupid quodpot and I'll play quidditch. It'll be great!" Once again, the shorter girl scowled at her friend, "It ain't a secret club unless we make it one asshole!" She crossed her arms, still glaring at the other girl. It wasn't like they had ever officially called it a club, it was really more of a refuge for them. Club sounded like it meant that it was fun, and while they had good times in the club house, they had also had many bad times. "I know it's a club house, but what club are we huh? The lost boys?" "What other kind of blood is there?" She asked rolling her eyes at Hunter, she smirked at the taller girl on the couch. For someone who was always so tough, she sure was worried about a little blood. "No, we can't just use spit! Blood is better, it's more official and stuff. Dad always told me that wizarding blood was special anyway, we could be like, brother's for real!"
Hunter smiled right back at her best friend, nodding her head firmly as she looked up above herself again. "You betcha. Fuck all of them other houses, we're gunna be Roanoke for sure! We'll beat all them nerds and artsy kids and everybody else. Take the quodpot cup every year!"
Turning on her side to look more closely at Mack, she frowned a bit as she realized she had offended the other blonde a little bit. Club might have been the wrong word, that was true. They didn't use their tree house in the same way a lot of kids used their tree houses. For them, it really was a house, a home away from their real homes where they felt completely unwanted. The tree house was their house, where they made the rules despite being just kids, and where looked out for only themselves and each other. It definitely wasn't always fun, though it always had it's moments. She wouldn't trade it. "Kay, guess it ain't officially no secret club," she muttered back, glaring right back at Mack. "Maybe I wanna be the lost boys. Or the orphan boys! We'll pretend our moms an' dads ran away and left us in the wild.. wouldn't that be real cool if they did? We could get raised by wolves, like the Jungle Book kid!" Gulping a bit at Mack's further rant about blood though, the slightly taller girl shifted on the couch again. "I guess," she relented, eying her friend. "Ya gunna cut yourself then, huh? How else you gunna get any blood? You ain't scared?" | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
