I should really be in bed. I have an afternoon game tomorrow.

But I'm not sleepy.

I miss F.

So. Um, what do you all do in your spare time? Or when you should be doing other things?

A game? What kind? Like cricket? Or horse back trials?

Oh, I know that feeling so well though. It's hard to sleep, all the little thoughts buzzing around.

Spare time? When I was at home I used to read, but my father complained that it was putting too many ideas in my head, said he didn't need a son who was less interested in facts than ideas. That's not an issue anymore. Neither is free time.

You're the second person to ask me if I play cricket today. Do I give off a very British vibe? I don't think I do. But I play baseball, to answer your question.

I never read too much. Spent most of my time playing outside. Probably not a surprise though, huh? Most bookworms don't become pro-athletes, do they?

So, no free time for you?

Baseball? Um, is that kind of like cricket? I think I've heard of it, but they don't play it where I'm from.

Pro-athlete? So you get payed to play this baseball? That sounds amazing! I assume you enjoy it, and getting paid to do what you love is always a plus. I was going to be chief inspector probably, like my father. I do spend a large amount of my time outdoors now, but it's not really the type of thing my family would be proud of. Um, but yes.

Um. Eh, a bit, I guess. There's bats and balls and running. Close enough.

Yep, I get paid. It's nice, though it can be exhausting. But I can't imagine doing anything else.

If you were going to be chief inspector, why are you not? What are you doing instead? And what you have been inspecting in a chiefly manner?

That makes me happy to hear.

Oh well, it was decided that perhaps I was not the type of person who would do well in that sort of position. Now I'm...I'm helping. But I would have been inspector in my hometown! It's not a large town, only several thousand people, but it's still a relatively important position even to those residing within the royal city. We don't have jurisdiction there, obviously, but we would have to give reports and things on any troubles in the outlying provinces. Especially these days when uprisings are likely.

Uprisings? Sounds...fun? Whereabouts are you from then?

Oh, uprisings are never fun. We're trying to quell revolution. Those sorts of things only lead to disorder and disquiet. Not the polite or logical way to go about things at all.

I'm from Morgan. It's about 200 kilometers from the royal city. Though, I suppose if you're interested in geography that's roughly the middle of Western Europe.

You're from the colonies then? What was that like?

I suppose not. Though sometimes that might be the only way to get things to change.

Ah. Never been there. I've been to England, Ireland. Went to Japan for a game. Mostly I don't leave the country, though.

The colonies? I...suppose I am. From one of the actual colonies, too. New York.
