open to Wendell
It was always nice to spend a long weekend back at the haven. Kellen liked seeing his cousins, who were much more like brothers to him than anything else, and it was good for Kieran to be around family and his pack. The little boy was usually so happy-go-lucky, but for the past few weeks he'd been crankier and more tired than usual. While most of the time, Kieran knew bad dreams were nothing more than bad dreams, the nightmares he'd been having lately had been leaving him hysterical. Kellen wasn't sure what to do about it. No matter how much he assured his son that he was fine, that no one was going to take him away, it never seemed to help and lately it had just made Kieran more upset that Kellen wasn't taking him seriously.

During dinner at the main house, Kieran had fallen asleep at the table while in the middle of eating and Kellen got up to carry him into the living room so that he could tuck him away on the couch. Jeremiah was curled up at the foot of the couch, still in wolf form, and once Kellen had set Kieran down Julie hopped up to curl up with his son, nuzzling against Kieran's chest. Kellen covered Kieran up and pressed a soft kiss to the little boy's forehead before he sighed quietly. It was obvious how concerned he was, it practically poured right off of him.

Wendell was leaning against the door frame as he watched Kellen with the little boy. He smiled at the softness between them, but he was concerned with Kellen's worry. The fact that Julian and Jeremiah were still wolves put him on edge too. One would have hoped snoozing would have set them right.

"He looks completely exhausted," Wendell noted in a quiet tone.

Like Wendell, Kellen was concerned for Julian and Jeremiah as well. He'd never even realized that a shift could be brought on by severe distress, and honestly, that was another thing that had him so worried for Kieran. His son was obviously stressed out, and the last thing he wanted was for an early shift. The fact that even Hunter wasn't sure what to do with the two little pups was even more unnerving. Kellen figured that maybe Hunter could just push them to shift back, like he could with all of the other wolves, but Hunter was too afraid of hurting them since this situation had never come up before. He felt it best to just let them shift back on their own, but when would that be?

At the sound of Wendell's voice, Kellen turned his head to look over at him and he smiled tiredly. He was just as exhausted as Kieran was. His worrying was leaving him just as restless as his son.

"He hasn't been sleeping well," he said quietly. "He keeps having these nightmares, and for some reason I can't make him feel better about them. He's just been getting more upset with me, like I'm not listening to him."

"You look like you haven't been sleeping much either." Wendell knew what worry could do to a parent. He considered himself as good as a parent to Julian and Jeremiah now and there was just something different about your own kid compared to other kids. Not that he didn't care a great deal about Kieren, but there wasn't the same level of responsibility there. Still, pack was pack and he wanted to help if he could. "Nightmares. Is there anything going on in his waking life that might be causing them?" He was under the impression that dreams stemmed from real life experiences, though he couldn't imagine any in the little boy's life.

"I haven't been," Kellen said honestly as he lifted a hand up to rub at his eyes with a heavy sigh. "When he wakes up upset, I get upset, and even after he falls asleep I stay awake," he added before he shook his head and dropped his hand back down to his lap. Julian started to lick at his hand, and Kellen glanced down at the little white pup. "I don't think there is. I mean, unless it's anxiety about me not being around as much? But I'm around just as much as I always have been, so that doesn't make sense. He keeps having these dreams where he says someone is taking me away from him, some really bad men, and he just freaks out when he wakes up. I tried telling him that I'm fine, that no one's taking me anywhere, but he just gets even more upset."

Wendell moved silently, remarkably good at moving without making much noise. Sitting down in a chair, he leaned back and crossed one long leg over the other. "Maybe he's still shaken up from the commotion caused by the other pack." The effects of Joseph's attack had caused a ripple of disturbance in the pack. If some of the pack could be taken, it opened up the possibility that others could be taken as well. "He could be fixating on the fact that kidnapping is now a reality to him rather than just a scary story." Even if the little boy hadn't been directly around it as it happened, Wendell knew that it could have affected him deeply.

The moment that Wendell sat down, Julian hopped off of the couch and went to go over to hop up onto Wendell's lap. He curled up and his tail swished back and forth in contentment, and Kellen smiled softly. He could sense the bond between Wendell and Julian, as well as Jeremiah. It was sweet.

"Maybe," he said after a moment as he turned his head to look down at Kieran while he slept. He let his fingers sweep through his son's hair and he sighed quietly. "I've just never seen him this upset before. He even snapped at Emmy, and he never snaps at Emmy. Emmy's his favorite."

"Over 2 million children suffer from sleep disorders. I don't suppose it would be unheard of for a werewolf to have one. Sometimes I'm convinced that Sullivan has sleep apnea because of the way he snores." He regarded Kieran as his hand combed idly through Julian's soft puppy fur. "Did you have sleep disturbances when you were young? Often times, children have a genetic predisposition to such things." He was trying to rule some things out, thinking that narrowing the issue down would make it easier to deal with.

One of the things Kellen loved most about spending time at the haven was the comfort he got from everyone. Wendell's wealth of knowledge and random facts were like a security blanket for Kellen, just as much as Hunter's presence was.

"No, I didn't," he said with a faint shake of his head as he traced the tip of his finger down along Kieran's nose.

He remembered when his son had first been born. Kellen had slept with his bestfriend, a girl he'd known since middle school. They were close, and though Kellen was much more attracted to men, it was one of those things that had just... happened. When she'd said she was pregnant, Kellen was panicked at first, but also excited. He'd been young, sure, but he was remarkably mature for his age. When Chelsea had died in childbirth he'd been heartbroken, but not because he was in love with her. He loved her, yes, but he wasn't in love with her. He was heartbroken because his bestfriend was gone, and so was Kieran's mother. It had been the two of them ever since.

"Do Julian and Jeremiah have nightmares? I mean, really bad ones that stress them out and make it almost impossible to calm them?" he asked curiously as he glanced over at Wendell.

Wendell nodded. "But I imagine those nightmares stemmed from their histories. Fear was a big part of their life not so long ago," he said sadly, always hating to think about it, but not wanting to forget that they came from a bad place. He'd been meaning to discuss in more detail with Joshua exactly what had gone on during their early childhood. He figured if he knew specifics that he could better understand some of their behaviors. But part of him didn't want to know.

He was quiet for a long moment, mulling over what he was about to say. Wendell thought of himself as a very scientific individual, and instinctively he disregarded the initial idea that Kieran's dreams were premonitions. But he couldn't discount the notion given the fact that he'd seen many, many supernatural things in his life and had researched a great deal of paranormal history. "Do you think the dreams could actually be prophetic?"

Kellen wasn't entirely aware of Joshua, Julian, and Jeremiah's past but he knew enough. He was thankful that not only were the boys safe now, but thankful that Kieran had others his age around the haven. It was nice to have the twins as well and Julie and Miah for Kieran to interact with. It was also sweet to see Hunter and Wendell so in love with parenthood.

At Wendell's question, Kellen lowered his attention back down to Kieran's face. It was nice to see him sleeping so peacefully. He reached down and scratched behind Miah's ears before he sighed quietly.

"I don't know," he said softly with a shrug. "If it is, then that means someone is going to come and take me away. And I don't think I want to think about that."

"Perhaps knowing about it would make it easier to avoid." He didn't like the idea of Kellen being taken, not to mention that it would be unnerving to have a wolf with extra talents such as psychic ability. As far as Wendell knew, werewolves didn't tend to have any other magical ability outside of the whole shapeshifting thing. He leaned forward, putting his elbows on his knees, careful not to displace the puppy in his lap. "Then again, perhaps knowing about it is what leads you into danger. I was going to suggest that you stay here for safe keeping, but it's not necessarily perfectly safe here either." That was one thing he missed: the feeling that he would always be perfectly safe in Coldwater.

Kellen was quiet as he looked down at Kieran while he pet the little black wolf pup next to him. He wasn't sure what to think or what to make of his son's dreams. If they were a sign of things to come, what was he suppose to do about it? How could he stop it? He sighed softly and looked over at Wendell.

"I just wish I could make him feel better, I'm his father, I'm suppose to be able to make him feel better," he sighed softly. "You're a father now, too, so I know you know what I mean."

Even if Julian and Jeremiah weren't biologically Wendell or Hunter's, the bond was unmistakable.

Hearing himself referred to as a 'father' struck him and he had to smile despite the somber topic. But his face quickly returned to match the sobriety of the moment. "Melatonin might help him get to sleep better. It's perfectly safe to use on children and I suspect dosage would be the same even for wolves." It might be something he could do for his son that was within his power.

Wendell always wanted to help and he wanted to fix everything for his packmates. He sat there, worried that he wasn't doing enough.

"Yeah?" Kellen asked hopefully as he leaned down to kiss the top of Kieran's head before he got up and stretched his arms over his head. He yawned tiredly and rubbed his hands over his face with a heavy sigh. "That's a good idea. I swear you know a little bit of everything, Wen."

"It might work for you too, though I would recommend a much higher dose for a full grown werewolf." He lifted the pup off his lap and set him on the floor before he stood up. "I think I have a few dream interpretation books as well, if you'd like to come up to the library with me?" He beckoned for Kellen to follow him upstairs.

Kellen looked back down at Kieran before he bent down to give the boy a kiss against the cheek. After covering Kieran up, he turned to follow Wendell who was dealing with a tiny wolf's attitude. The second Wendell had set Julie down, Julie growled and then bit down on one of Wendell's toes.

"Demanding little guy, isn't he?" Kellen grinned as he scooped Julie up to tuck him up on the couch with Kieran.

Even puppies had dominion over Wendell in the pack and he took the growling quite gracefully. If Julie wanted to demand something from him, Wendell was more than likely to comply. Discipline would be for another wolf to exact, not for Wen. "His teeth are surprisingly sharp," he laughed good naturedly, clearly not perturbed by the gnawing in the least.

Once in the library, he went to his extensive psychology section and browsed through the well-organized titles before pulling out a Freudian book as well as one that was less steeped in psychology and focused more on the metaphysical.

Kellen let out a quiet laugh as he followed Wendell out of the living room and upstairs. Julian followed, his little legs desperate to keep up on him. He slid on the wood flooring before he regained his footing and he nipped at Wendell's heels.

"He is certainly attached to you," Kellen grinned before he saw all of the books and sat down to peer at them
with interest.

Wendell plucked up the little creature by the scruff with as much skill as a mother wolf might use to transport her pups. He knew the exact spot to touch that would make Julian go briefly limp with relaxation so that Wendell could get him up into his arms and cup his hand under his rump to support his weight as he let the furball rest against his chest.

"It says here that kidnapping can be a premonition of news. Or that life changes are in the works." He frowned and shook his head. "That's rather illogical."

Kellen watched as Wendell plucked Julie up and settled the little guy against his chest. Julie went completely still, his blue eyes wide with surprise. Once he was settled against Wendell's chest, the little white pup's body shook happily as well as his tail. He stilled after a moment and yawned happily. It was heart warming and adorable.

"Maybe he thinks I am gonna meet someone new, and not have as much time for him?" Kellen suggested with an arched brow. That actually kind of made some sense.

Quirking a brow, Wendell smiled a little. "Yeah? Are you looking for someone new?" It felt much better to disregard the dreams as possible prophecies because he didn't know if he could handle another pack member getting taken, and what could they do to stop it aside from being aware? He was considering enrolling everyone in one big self-defense class.

"It does make sense though, with the kidnapping. Someone will take you away from him. Single children with single parents often have this issue when the parent decides to date."

"I'm not looking for anyone, no," Kellen said with a soft laugh. His job as a wardrobe stylist for many wealthy Seattle people kept him quite busy. "But I wouldn't rule anything out. I could meet someone and make time for them if it was the right person," he added honestly. He smiled as Julie tipped his head up and licked at Wendell's chin while his little tail wagged furiously.

He thought it was impossible for the little ones to have any more energy, but it seemed that in this form, they were more carefree. Wendell rather liked that, though he feared if they stayed this way, they'd never quite go back to being right as humans. Even though his relationship with Hunter had made him more in tune with his own wolf, Wendell always favored the human side of things, his brain enjoying the solid logic and function it experienced in human form. He didn't want the boys to miss out on that if they grew up as wolves. He had to trust that they would go back when the time was right.

"Maybe sit down and have a talk with him about it? Reassure him that you won't be replacing him with anyone. Even the closest of parent/child relationships can be threatened by another adult coming into the picture." He wrinkled up his nose. "I'm the last person to go to for dating or parenting advice, aren't I. All I do is recite psychology literature at you."

As confident as Wendell could be in his knowledge, he would always be a little bit worried that people got annoyed with it. He was glad of the reassurance and smiled. "Well, thank you."

"You should try and catch a nap while you can. I'll go back downstairs and take care of Kieran. I should probably feed this one too," he said in reference to the white ball of fluff.

Kellen nodded his head as he slipped past the two, and he reached out to scratch behind Julie's ear. He passed Vance on the way out, and the younger wolf poked his head into the study.

"Hey," he smiled softly. "Are you busy?"

He wanted to tell Wendell about how he'd slept with Pirate. Vance had grown very close to Wen after what they'd endured together, and he looked up to the wolf as a mixture of a friend and a mentor.

Vance slipped into the room as the door to Joshua's opened up down the hall, and Julian squirmed around in Wendell's grasp until he was put down. The little pup took off full speed out of the room, and Vance turned to watch him go with an amused little laugh before he sat down and let his attention flicker back to Wendell.

"It certainly made school easier," he smiled and sat down in one of the nice leather chairs. "Speaking of which, how is school going for you?" That was one of his big things. He always encouraged the younger wolves with school. Being a shapeshifter could be incredibly distracting, especially since the first shift frequently happened in high school at a crucial time in their education. Part of Wendell wished it would come much later or much earlier.

"It's going pretty well," Vance said happily. "Between you and Basil, I have lots of help if I need it," he added. He was quite thankful that Basil had someone like Vance around. He worried that the boy would isolate himself too easily and be miserable socially. Even though he had Emmy, that didn't help him much at school and Wendell knew it could be miserable. That had been one of the many reasons he'd left the haven for so long after high school.

"There's another aspect of your life I should ask you about," he said in reference to Vance's mention of Pirate. "How's that going?"

"It was," Vance said as he smoothed his hands down against the tops of his thighs. "I'm very happy with how it went, and I'm glad it was with him," he added honestly. "I know I'm young, but I knew he was the right one. I didn't want to wait. After what happened, how we were taken, I just think it would have been silly to wait."

Wendell nodded. "If you were human, I might think you were too young, but we have a stronger sense of who we love. It's more basic for us, easier for most, though not for all." He considered Gael so long ago and what had happened between them. "You know, they say we mate for life, but don't think that it's some sort of requirement. Not that you and Pirate aren't perfectly suited to one another."

Vance chewed on the inside of his lower lip as he stretched his legs out and looked down at his shoes. The idea that Pirate might not be the one for him was absurd, and he felt that what Wendell said about their kind mating for life was fitting.

"I think he's the one, I know he is," he said firmly. "He doesn't form emotional bonds very often. I know this is important to us both."

Wendell hadn't spent much time around Pirate; it was nearly impossible to catch him around the main house. "He certainly does keep to himself and his own pack," he noted without passing judgment. "He must be so surprised to find himself in love." He assumed Pirate was in the same place as Vance.

Vance nodded his head a little bit. Even within in his own pack, Pirate kept to himself. The only person Vance had really seen Pirate at ease with was Louisa. The good thing about Pirate, though, was that once you were in that circle of trust, amazing things happened. Vance had experienced that first hand.

"I push him sometimes," Vance replied softly with a faint smile. "But he needs me to," he added as he got to his feet. "Anyway, I just wanted to tell you. I like telling you things that are going on with me," he said as he went over to press a kiss to Wendell's cheek. "You're okay, right?"

Wendell laughed a little at Vance's brevity. But he appreciated the update. "Yes, I'm okay." All in all, he was past the stuff that had happened physically. Emotionally, he was having some strange issues with Hunter that he didn't know how to handle, but he couldn't let anyone in the pack know.

There was a very fine line between lying and keeping things from children. Vance had been through a lot, and Wendell was bent on protecting him as he would any of the younger wolves.
