Doing everything but look at Kellen, he chewed on the inside of his cheek uncomfortably. "You would hurt me. You'd hurt me to get away. And it doesn't matter your intentions--people still get hurt by your kind and how are we supposed to trust that you won't lose control someday?"

His heart felt a sharp pang when Kellen talked about his son. He knew full well that Rex would put the little boy down as well and that seemed inherently wrong. But it was the humane thing to do. Safe. He wasn't going to tell Kellen the lie that Rex had told him about a ransom. He was a miserable liar, and so he just kept quiet about the fact that Kellen wouldn't have to worry about what Kieran would do without him. "Rex will be back soon. There's really not much else I can do for you, so we don't need to keep talking." But he had to stay downstairs to keep an eye on the creature.
