Kellen still wasn't sure what to make of Kieran's dreams, especially after speaking with Wendell. Kieran had never had trouble with bad dreams before, not like this, and it was worrying Kellen that maybe Wendell had a point. But Kellen wasn't sure what to do about it. All he could do was assure his son that things were fine, which made him feel guilty because that only seemed to make everything worse. A part of him wondered if maybe he should just stick close to the haven for a while, but his work wouldn't allow it. And Kieran had school. So they headed back to Seattle after their long weekend, and when Monday morning rolled around Kellen got Kieran up and ready for school.

The morning was a normal one, just like any other. He made Kieran breakfast and he'd helped him get dressed and packed up for school before they got in the car and he went to go drop Kieran off. A kiss on the cheek and an I love you, and Kieran was out of the car and heading up the steps of his school. Like always, Kellen waited for his son to get inside before he took off and headed for his office. He rented a space for his work because he had lots of wardrobes on hand to pull from just in case a client called at the last minute for a special event or photoshoot. Once he parked in his usual spot, he got out with his messenger bag and coffee in hand to head to the door.

Ever since he'd hooked up with Oliver and Harris, Rex had been focusing on the Coldwater pack. It seemed the right time to make a move. Rex would not ignore fate, and running into the two fleeing humans was more than coincidence. He'd packed up Quillan and his base of operations and moved to Bellevue, far enough away from Coldwater to melt into the background noise. But close enough to stalk their prey. Logan spent too much time at the haven. But Kellen was a remarkably good target and it didn't matter to Rex if he had a small son. He was a werewolf, and a monster. He was black and white about that issue.

The ambulance parked outside was surprisingly inconspicuous. Bad things happened in the city and people got hurt. The ambulance stood open, waiting for whomever was having the problem. But this was a setup. Rex watched Kellen go inside and he followed after him. When they were alone, he slipped up behind him and put a hand over his mouth as he plunged a long, impossibly thick needle through his clothes and skin and into his spine. That direct of a hit would put the creature out for just long enough to get him into the ambulance and back to the holding area. People thought the man carrying out the limp body was an EMT, doing his job.

Kellen had a long day ahead of him, and his lack of sleep did nothing to help his concentration. He saw the ambulance, but as predicted by Rex, he thought nothing of it as he slipped into the hall of his building so that he could make his way to his little warehouse office. He knew that someone was behind him, but he figured it was one of the other occupants of the building, so he didn't even glance back. The moment he felt a hand over his mouth, he dropped his coffee and bag so that he could try and get away, but the piercing of the needle into his spine sent the drug right into his system and he went limp as his eyes fluttered closed. When he came to, he was in the back of the ambulance. He was groggy, and confused as he tried to sit up, but he'd been restrained.

"What's going on?" he muttered. "Where am I?"

Quillan was driving cautiously, careful not to jar the back of the truck. He didn't want to look suspicious or draw attention, so he drove normally, sirens off. They would have plenty of time to get back to the house Rex had rented as a temporary base of operations. All of their homes were temporary and even if Quillan dreamed of leading a normal life someday, he was pretty sure that would never happen having seen the things he'd seen. He glanced back through the little window but couldn't see anything that would tell him what was going on with the wolf. They still frightened him after all this time, no matter how many Rex and he had killed.

Back in the back, Rex was injecting a different drug into the IV that he'd started in Kellen's arm. He was far from medically trained, but he knew how to do the things necessary for quelling the powers of a werewolf. He was a hunter because his father was a hunter and his father before him. The fluid going into Kellen's veins right now was a sedative, a powerful muscle relaxer that wouldn't knock the man out, but would make it almost impossible for his body to shift because of the sheer reduction in muscle strength. The shift might still come though, so Rex did his best to keep the man calm. "You're in the back of an ambulance. We have no intention of harming you," a lie but Rex was good at it. "We're simply going to use you for money and then return you to your pack. Safe and sound." Sure, they'd return him to his pack, as soon as his pack was dead.

Kellen drew in a breath as his brow furrowed up in confusion. Had he been hurt? Why was he in an ambulance? When Rex continued talking, and said that they weren't going to harm him and return him to his pack after they got some money, he started to panic. This had to be what Kieran was talking about. He tried to lift a hand, but his muscles weren't really working and he was being restrained. He groaned and let his head fall back.

"Why are... Where's my son?" he asked softly.

"Your son is at school, right where you left him." Either Rex had been watching him that morning or he knew the man's schedule well enough to know that's where Kieran would be. "I imagine when you don't show to pick him up, that the school will call you and then they'll call the backup number you left. Who would that be?" The man's voice was rich and calm, showing no amount of anger or anxiety. He was professional, as if this really was all about money. It was about business in another sense for Rex though.

It worried Kellen that this man, whoever he was, had been watching him that morning or maybe even longer than that. At least Kieran was safe, though. The school would call Aryk, because he was in Seattle with Aubrey the most often out of his family and pack members. They'd probably take Kieran to the haven, where he'd be safe.

"How do you know about my pack?" he asked, "Who are you?"

Rex was silent for a moment, checking something in one of the drawers. He glanced through the small window into the cab, taking his time in answering Kellen's questions.

Finally, he spoke. "I'm Rex. My father hunted your kind and taught me all of this shit. But to be honest, I like making money off of it a lot better than I like killing." Rex had no problem lying to the wolf and he did so with practiced ease. "Your pack is pretty widely known as the biggest and most powerful. Lots of cash too. I'm sure they'd be willing to pay a lot for your safe return." Of course, Rex knew that Hunter would come barrelling after his little lost lamb and the four of them would be ready to take the alpha out.

A hunter. Who obviously came from a line of hunters. Great. The last thing Kellen wanted was to put his pack and family in danger, and while Rex was good at lying, Kellen couldn't help but feel wary. Hunters didn't bargain. They killed. He knew that, and he was afraid that he'd never get to see Kieran again. He closed his eyes and tipped his head back while he tried to think of the best way to handle his situation.

"I'm not sure I believe you," he said after a moment. "Don't lie."

He quirked a brow and looked down at the slight man. He was more than aware that his narrow face and lithe limbs hid a much more powerful fight. Still, it struck him as amusing that such a creature would tell him not to lie. "Your kind always tells me that it can smell lies...is that what you're going to tell me?" Rex stared hard at Kellen and then shook his head slowly. "If I wanted to hurt you, you'd be hurt right now. If I wanted to kill you, you'd be dead." He pretended that it was as simple as that.

But the clever ones were always far more dangerous than the brutish ones. Rex had ways of dealing with the sheer strength of werewolves, but the ones with cunning always proved to be difficult. Kellen had been the only truly viable choice, but he was thinking perhaps he'd bitten off more than he'd bargained for.

Kellen went quiet. He could argue many things, but he all ready knew that Rex wasn't going to listen. Most hunters were set in their ways, and it took a lot to bring them around to the reality that werewolves weren't monsters. Not all of them, at least. There were the rogue wolves that needed to be put down, the wild kind that went too far or didn't know how to control themselves. And there were ones like himself, who were raised in a pack and led by alphas like Hunter who taught them well. But hunters didn't see things that way, and Kellen knew that. The only hunter he'd ever heard of or known to change his mind was Jocelin. Rex, Kellen could tell, didn't have the heart for that kind of change, so Kellen wasn't going to waste his time.

He didn't ask any other questions or try to talk. Kieran was safe, and he knew that his pack would keep him safe. His heart ached to think that he might not ever get to see his son again, but he damn sure was going to do everything he could to try. For now, though, he was biding his time.

Rex did not appreciate the silence. When people were babbling, they weren't thinking of means to escape and they weren't getting their bearings. That was a good state: the frightened ravings and questions of someone not ready to accept their fate problem and find a solution. He banged on the wall between the cab and the back, indicating for Quillan to go faster.

It was no time at all until they were back at the house Rex had rented. It wasn't too secluded, giving him an advantage over Hunter. Wolves running around here would be noticed. He wasn't about to hide out in a place that was basically werewolves' home playing field. Granted, an ambulance pulling up the driveway was strange. But doubtful that anyone would phone the police over it, especially when most neghbors were at work. Quillan and Rex made short work of unloading Kellen and Rex left Quillan as soon as they'd hauled the wolf downstairs. He needed to return the ambulance.

The cage that Kellen was in was small, so small that he would only be able to lie on the mattress and eliminate in a pot only a foot away. There would be hardly room to shift, but it was possible. The most important aspect was that there was nowhere to cower away from needles or darts that may be coming his way in the future. Quillan stared at Kellen, who had probably already metabolized the sedative now that the IV was out. "Can I get you something to eat or drink?" He asked politely, as if welcoming company.

Kellen could tell he was unnerving Rex, though it wasn't by much. But it was something. When the two men took him inside the house and down to the little cage, his stomach turned. Even if he could shift, he had no room to do much. They could just inject him and put him out. He'd have to think of something else.

When Rex left them alone, and Quillan asked him if he wanted anything to eat or drink, Kellen met his eyes for a moment. Rex was cold. This guy was different. Maybe this guy could be his way out if Kellen reasoned with him. Maybe if he showed the one that he wasn't a monster, then he had a chance.

"Some water, please," he said softly.

When he'd first started out, Quillan had tried to be ruthless and cold like Rex. He recognized that the man himself wasn't mean-spirited and he admired Rex's ability to shut off all emotion for a good decision that might be hard for other people to make, but necessary. Rex, however, had taught Quillan to play to his strengths and caring was one of them. Granted, Rex would much rather Quillan care about humans rather than all living things.

Quillan went upstairs for a moment and came back down with a large bottle of water, tall and narrow so that it could fit through the bars. "I'm Quillan," he said as he knelt down next to the cage, handing Kellen the bottle. "Are you sure you're not hungry? I know your kind eats a great deal. You're not going to get enough food here, but you'll get some and I'll try to make it taste good."

Kellen took the bottle of water, purposefully allowing his fingers to brush against Quillan's. He took a few drinks before he looked up to meet the other man's eyes, and he swallowed hard.

"Thank you. I'm Kellen, I would say it's nice to meet you, but under the circumstances..." he said quietly. "You probably all ready know my name, anyhow. If you'd like to make me something to eat, I would appreciate that very much."

Quillan pulled back at the brush of the fingers as if afraid that Kellen would somehow infect him. He couldn't help but think of his brother and a sick feeling came to his stomach. "I do know your name, but it makes me feel a little more civil hearing it from you." That seemed important to Quillan, though on many levels, he knew that he was only fooling himself.

He nodded and disappeared upstairs again for a little longer this time before he returned with a big sandwich. It was clear that he was going to push the rules to their limit as he did with all of the prisoners Rex took. But the man didn't take a lot of prisoners. "Here, turkey. Do you like mayo? I put a lot of mayo on it because it has calories. I'm not--I'm not trying to help you too much but I know how hard it is to be hungry."

Kellen rubbed his hands over his face as he swallowed hard. He felt like crying. He was terrified that he'd never see his son again, and he didn't know what to do with himself. His eyes welled up and he sniffed softly, and when Quillan came back he took the sandwich to start eating it.

"I assume you've either been raised into this sort of thing, or you've had or lost someone to someone like me," he said quietly. "There are some like me who don't know how to handle what they are, but not all are like that. I'm not like that. You've been following me, I'm sure. Have you seen me do anything that makes me deserve this kind of thing?"

Quillan took a step back and wrapped his arms around his waist, a physical protection against the lies Kellen was going to tell him. Any prisoner would say anything it took to get someone to set them free--that's what Rex said. He trusted that man and he trusted what he said. And while Kellen might be worthy of kindness because he was alive, he was not worthy of freedom or mercy.

"I haven't seen you as a wolf. Werewolves lead human lives, but they are not human." He didn't use the word 'you,' because he did best when he compartmentalized.

"Look at me, what would you call me? I'm partly human. I'm just different, that doesn't make me a monster," Kellen reasoned as he looked up at Quillan. "I'm a father. I love my son very much, and I'm all he has. His mother died while giving birth to him, I'm all he has. What's he going to do without me?" he added, and felt his voice crack. He swallowed hard as he tried to think of what to say to get through to Quillan, but he was starting to feel defeated. "I'm not a monster. I've never hurt anyone in my entire life, in this form or my other form. If I changed right now, I wouldn't hurt you."

Doing everything but look at Kellen, he chewed on the inside of his cheek uncomfortably. "You would hurt me. You'd hurt me to get away. And it doesn't matter your intentions--people still get hurt by your kind and how are we supposed to trust that you won't lose control someday?"

His heart felt a sharp pang when Kellen talked about his son. He knew full well that Rex would put the little boy down as well and that seemed inherently wrong. But it was the humane thing to do. Safe. He wasn't going to tell Kellen the lie that Rex had told him about a ransom. He was a miserable liar, and so he just kept quiet about the fact that Kellen wouldn't have to worry about what Kieran would do without him. "Rex will be back soon. There's really not much else I can do for you, so we don't need to keep talking." But he had to stay downstairs to keep an eye on the creature.

"If we aren't natural, then why do we exist in nature?" Kellen reasoned quietly. "People get hurt by people every day. Your own kind destroys eachother every day. Humans hurt eachother more than my kind has ever hurt them." And Kellen firmly believed that. "You don't understand my kind. If there is someone like us out there that can't control themself, we take care of it. If you think we're all evil, then all humans are evil, too. You should kill everyone."

"Stop it!" Quillan said firmly, anxiety spiking as he wrung his hands together. "Stop. I'm not arguing with something like you! I've given you food and water--and--just stop!" He turned his back on Kellen like an angry child pouting in a corner. He'd been so much more willing to follow Rex blindly before they'd found his brother again and before Rex had convinced him to kill the man. Madigan. It had been so cruel to find him and then lose him all over again.

"I'm sorry, I'm not trying to argue," Kellen reasoned. Now he knew he had some sort of chance. The fact that Quillan was visibly distressed told Kellen that he was making some sort of an impact, and he wasn't going to quit now. But he had to be careful. "I promise you I wouldn't hurt you to try and get away. I wouldn't hurt you at all. I could show you, I could prove it to you if you'd just let me."

Glancing at the stairs, thinking Rex might appear out of nowhere to rescue him like he had the very first time they'd met, Quillan was silent for a moment. Oliver and Harris were gone as well. He didn't like those two. While Rex didn't seem to care one way or the other about their lack of morality, Quillan was disturbed by it. He was going to make sure to protect Kellen from their attentions if he could.

"You said his mother died when he was born?" Quillan spoke as he turned, not answering Kellen's plea. "Would you have stolen him if she hadn't died? That's what they usually do, you know. Either that, or they kill the mother if the child is a boy. Either way, they abandon them."

"No," Kellen said softly. "Chelsea knew what I was. She was my bestfriend. We would have raised him together." He wished that Chelsea was still around because she was an amazing person, and she would have been an even more amazing mother. "Our pack doesn't kill any mothers. Mostly we are honest with them. One of my packmates just had a baby with a woman, she is staying with us."

"There are no good wolves, just disasters waiting to happen." He sat down on the steps, putting his head in his hands. He was speaking more to himself than he was to Kellan at this point, reciting a mantra. When he heard the front door slam, he lept to his feet and turned, waiting for Rex to appear. His heavy footsteps walked across the floor and then down the stairs.

"You fed him?" He asked with a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Go upstairs, Quillan." He directed the man to the door and then turned to face Kellen. "Comfortable?"

When Kellen heard Rex come back, Kellen frowned with defeat. He knew Quillan was his only chance, and he had to keep working on Quillan whenever he could. The second Rex came downstairs, and Quillan went up them, Kellen went silent. He finished his sandwhich and water before he laid down and turned with his back to the hunter. He wasn't going to even bother with this one.

"All right then. Fair enough." Rex wasn't going to beg the wolf to talk. Going close to the cage, he knelt down to double check its security. Once he was satisfied that Kellen wasn't going anywhere, he left him to his own limited devices, heading back upstairs.
