open to pirate arrrrrrrr [he's probably glaring rn]
Vance hated when Pirate had to work late into the night. He was a little more than spoiled by the other wolf's warmth when he'd crawl into bed at night, and having to go to bed without his mate was disappointing. It wasn't even about sex - it wasn't as if they had sex every single night, it was just about the comfort of having Pirate there.

School had started back up, and Vance was now into his sophomore year. He was about to be sixteen now and it was strange to think that he'd known Pirate for nearly an entire year now. He'd been through a hell of a lot for a boy his age, wolf or not, and sometimes he still had nightmares about being kidnapped and especially about Kenneth. He never let on about them, though, because he felt a little silly. It'd been over six months ago, hadn't it? Sometimes he couldn't remember. Usually when he wokeup from a dream, he just snuggled against Pirate and went back to sleep.

Tonight, though, Pirate wasn't there to snuggle up to and even if he was Vance was in the middle of a dream instead of waking up from it. His entire body was stiff, posture not at all natural for one who was sleeping, and every now and then he'd mutter or whimper about something in his sleep.

Louisa served up the omelette and set it in front of Vance. It was a massive five egg omelette, cheese and ham and mushrooms. She gestured for the boy to eat up just as Sterling mosied into the kitchen.

"Pirate ain't the best thing to happen to nobody, cher. You just too young to know any better," he drawled. He was teasing. It was just so damn easy to rip on Pirate all the time because the wolf was easy to rile up. Sterling never understood why he was so serious about everything.

"Just because I'm young, doesn't mean I haven't been through enough to know better about things," Vance said back quietly.

Though he acted tough, and as if he wasn't bothered by being kidnapped, that wasn't the case. He just didn't see the point in whining about it. And then to be attacked at the Valentine dance, that certainly hadn't helped in the way of emotional healing, either. It had been a huge set back, but it was another thing he didn't like to talk about except to Pirate and Wendell.

Plucking up his fork, he went silent and started to eat quietly.

Sterling stood on his tiptoes to peer over at the next thing Louisa was making. He was very tall and he really didn't need to, but he liked being theatrical.

Louisa sighed. Just as she was getting Vance to feel comfortable, Sterling had to walk in and say something stupid. "If I make you something to eat, will you go away afterward?" She loved Sterling like she loved all of her wolves, but he was an acquired taste, and she knew that.

He nodded and sat down at the table, putting his chin in his hands as he looked at Vance. "Well, little peeshwank, I suppose you've had quite a few bad experiences, so yeah. Yeah, Pirate could be the best of those things."

"It's not just because of my bad experiences," Vance said quietly.

Usually he was much more friendly, but he wasn't about to sit there and not defend his mate. In a lot of ways, Vance felt like Sterling really didn't even know Pirate that well. He also got the feeling that if any of his pack knew just how close and open Pirate was with him, they'd be shocked. Well, except for Louisa, maybe. She definitely all ready knew, somewhat, if not completely.

"What are your plans for the day?" he asked Sterling, deciding to change the subject.

He glanced down at his wrist as if there was a watch on it. Sterling was definitely not the type to wear a watch, but he certainly was the type to check an imaginary one. "Don't have any plans," he intoned lazily. "Now, now, cher, we had fun when we went into town to make some money, didn't we? Why you being so defensive? God don't like ugly, you hear?" He wanted Vance's happy-go-lucky nature back and Sterling was too dumb to realize why he wasn't getting it anymore.

Louisa set food down in front of the man. "It couldn't be because you're being a pill?" she frowned at him a little and Sterling gave her an innocent look.

"Sometimes you say things without thinking, or just for the sake of saying them, and you don't realize how you're coming off or what you're saying might even mean," Vance replied simply.

He'd never been the type to just sit there and stay quiet for too long. He often said what was on his mind.

"Pirate's part of your pack. And he's my mate. So if you want me to not be defensive, don't say things about him I won't like," he ended with.

Raising his eyebrows, Sterling looked surprised by the honesty. Often enough, people told him to shut up or go away, but they were never so succinct about the fact that he could be cruel.

Louisa laughed a little, appreciating the fact that Vance wasn't just taking what Sterling dished out.

"I say things without thinking all the time, Peeshwank." He reached out and ruffled Vance's hair, still showing him disrespect, reiterating the fact that he felt higher up than the kid in the pack. "Lemme know if you ever gonna do anything about it other than talk."

"Is it too hard to think before you talk?" Vance asked, not at all put off by the ruffling of his hair, and he took another bite of his food. "How abot you let me know when you can start thinking before you talk," he added sweetly with a faint little smile. "I'm sure that'll be hard for you."

"It'll be impossible for him. His brain doesn't connect to his mouth in any discernible way." Pirate walked into the kitchen and got a glass of milk from the fridge. He'd rolled over to find Vance not in bed with him and he couldn't go back to sleep. He offered a growl to Sterling, staring the other wolf down until Sterling offered a casual shrug and set to eating his breakfast without another word.

Pirate couldn't help but be proud of the way Vance had stood up to the other. And he really liked seeing that Vance didn't seem interested in Sterling in the least. There was still some insecurity there for him.

When Vance heard Pirate's voice, his head tipped back so that he could see him come into the kitchen. Pirate looked upside down from the angle, and Vance smiled a little before he went back to his breakfast and took a sip of his juice.

Vance had no idea what reason for Pirate's hostility towards Sterling was about, but he figured it was just a clash of personalities. A pack dominance thing, maybe.

Sterling fooled around with Pirate's last human boyfriend. Not mate material, but Pirate didn't

know that at the time.]

Louisa tended to let dominance issues play out on their own unless it started to look like someone was going to get hurt. She didn't condone violence, but she knew that if she controlled these sorts of things with a heavy hand, her pack would end up in more turmoil. Not knowing one's place created anxiety and anxiety bred viciousness. Louisa had had enough of that to last a lifetime.

As if by magic, she had food ready for Pirate as well, having figured that he would come down sooner or later without Vance in the bed. She set his plate down and sat down at the table herself. "Thanks, Lou," Pirate muttered and started in on his omelette. He nudged Vance under the table, offering him the slightest quirk of the corner of his mouth.

Vance glanced over at Pirate with a soft smile before he finished off his food and juice, then he just sat with his elbow propped up on the table and his chin in his hand.

"I think I might go for a run," he said quietly after a moment.

Usually he went on runs with Pirate, but it'd been nearly two weeks since that had last happened. Sometimes he ran with Vaughn, Basil, or Wen, but of course his first choice was always his mate.

When Pirate heard that, he ate even faster because it sounded like the perfect way to spend Vance's impromptu holiday from school.

Just as Sterling was about to say something about tagging along, Louisa came up behind him and cuffed him on the back of the head. "I need you to help me move the dresser upstairs," she said firmly. Louisa, of course, did not need help to move anything, but she wanted to keep Sterling busy to at least give Vance and Pirate a head start.

Sterling caught on and stuck his tongue out at her, but wiped his mouth and got up from the table. "Fine, fine, fine," he groaned.

Vance got to his feet and went over to rinse his plate and glass off, and once they were in the dishwasher he leaned against the counter and waited for Pirate to be done and do the same.

He'd tugged on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt before coming downstairs, and he didn't bother with going up to put something else on. He didn't even bother with shoes as they headed out onto the porch together and down the steps so that they could walk towards the woods.

"Have you ever run with Sterling before?" he asked curiously after a moment, "I think he wanted to come with us." Vance wasn't sure how he felt about that.

"He wanted to come," he nodded as he stood out on the porch, glancing around and smelling the air to determine a good direction for running. Even if he was still a little tired, he knew a run would envigorate him. "Sterling--" Pirate grimmaced. "He just injects himself into situations whenever he can. He doesn't like to be alone or ignored. Did you want him to come? I can go back and get him." Pirate tried to make that suggestion as neutral as possible because he wanted Vance's honest opinion.

Vance shook his head a little bit and he reached out to lace his fingers up with Pirate's. Vance was sure that he'd never fully understand Pirate and Sterling's interactions, and that was fine.

"Just you and me," he said softly with a little smile.

If Sterling came out later on, then that was fine, but he appreciated the head start that Louisa had given them.

He couldn't help but look relieved when Vance gave him the right answer to his question. He didn't know why he couldn't make Sterling hate him, no matter how mean he tried to be to the other wolf. But Sterling always came around. Pirate was just glad that the man's charms didn't seem to work on Vance at all.

"Good," he said with a little smile and slipped his hand around the small of Vance's back. "Just you and me." He picked a direction and headed that way, wanting to explore a little wider range of the territory.

Vance let Pirate lead the way, and once they reached a good clearing, he started to shed his clothes. Soon it would be winter, and he wouldn't be able to walk barefoot as much. He found he loved the way the grass felt beneath his feet.

Turning, he faced Pirate with a shy sort of smile. He wasn't sure if he'd ever get use to the weight of Pirate's eyes on him while nude.

Pirate always took a moment to appreciate Vance's body, even if he looked like he might not be outright staring. He hadn't been born a wolf, so he had old conentions regarding nudity. But he really, really loved it when Vance got naked.

Still shy about shifting in front of even Vance, he slipped behind a bush. The process was rough for him because he always resisted, even when it was his decision to do so. When he finally trotted back out, he sniffed around for Vance.

Shifting for Vance went surprisingly smooth. He never really fought it, and it was easy for him to just roll with it once he'd gotten the hang out of it. When Pirate came out, Vance was sniffing at the ground, having caught the scent of Shannon. It was always interesting to catch his scent because he was a fox, and the coyotes, too. Haben as well.

Simply letting go was something that Pirate could learn from the boy. He was amazed how well Vance had acclimated to and accepted the shift. Trotting over to him, he nuzzled his nose against Vance's furry shoulder, sniffing him. His senses were so much sharper in this form and he picked up on a thousand more nuances about Vance this way that he loved.

Dropping his own nose to the ground, he let out a bark when he caught the fox smell. There were even more smells around here than when they used to run in the bayou.

When Pirate barked, Vance barked too and turned his head to nip at the other wolf's ear before he took off into the woods like a dart. He liked the way it felt to have Pirate chase after him. He didn't mind feeling like prey, in fact he really sort of enjoyed it, especially when Pirate was his hunter.

That drove Pirate crazy in the best way and he took off after him, lunging into a sprint. He didn't cut Vance any slack. He ran his hardest, knowing that's what the other would want. Pirate didn't cottle anyone when it came to things like this.

Soon enough, he'd caught up to Vance and he pounced on him, taking him down to the ground roughly.

Vance ran at full speed, knowing that Pirate wouldn't cut him any slack so he wasn't about to cut Pirate any slack in return. He zipped through the trees and brush, but soon enough he found himself taken to the ground and he let out a yelp mixed with a growl. He squirmed as he tried to free himself, but eventually he just went still beneath Pirate and submitted.

The struggle was good and it made the submission even better. Pirate let out a dark growl as he snapped his teeth at Vance's neck, just barely missing his jugular. That was on purpose, of course.

When he felt adequately respected, he snorted and licked his mate's nose, indulging in a little play. It was far easier to let his inhibitions go in this form.

When Pirate licked at his nose, Vance rolled over onto his side and played back. Eventually he settled and curled up with a large yawn, clearly he wanted to nap and cuddle up with his mate. He waited for Pirate to get comfortable before he snuggled up close to him and closed his eyes.

Really, it would never be very difficult for Vance to get his way with Pirate, though the man would never let the other know that because then he didn't stand a fighting chance.

He curled up around him and rested his head on Vance's before he relaxed too. This was one way of getting the sleep they both needed.

Vance drifted off to sleep easily, and he slept soundly for the first time in a long time. It was easier to sleep in this form without the stress and worries of the things he was going through in his human form, especially with Pirate there beside him.
