Another charity fundraiser (open)
It was always good business to be seen in public supporting a good cause.

Carol told herself this as she smiled yet again at another tuxedo-clad man regaling her with his list of good deeds to impress her. President and CEO of Ferris Air sounded good, and it looked lovely when written in a calligraphy hand on an invitation. The fact that she was currently drowning in paperwork back at the office and should be attending to it put a bit of a damper on the evening.

She tacked her smile in place and listened to...what was his name again?...with feigned interest, hoping for a rescue or at least a distraction. A waiter with more champagne would do nicely.

Bruce Wayne is bored. He certainly looks engaged in the conversation he's in, and he's smiling like an idiot on his fourth drink, but he's bored. First, he's not drunk; he never is. Secondly, the person he's speaking with is nattering on about nothing, which is the norm.

Thirdly, he wishes he could be out on the streets this evening, putting just one more mugger or rapist behind bars.

Should have had Lucius come to this thing. Nothing of interest here tonight. Bruce thinks.

He almost wishes for a robbery to take place.

Instead of yawning, Carol glanced around the room and wondered why the smiling idiot was smiling, and thought he looked familiar. Nearly everyone in here looked familiar. If she needed a name, she only had to nudge the still talkative man wearing on her patience to look in that direction and she was sure she'd get a name and a media history.

When caught looking, she raised her still full glass slightly and returned to making her mental list of things to be done later tonight and tomorrow, and smiling in general.

Carol Ferris raises her glass at him, and Bruce smiles back, all the while calculating her intent in his mind. He's well aware of who she is, and Ferris Air is one of the leading aerospace companies in American. She's supposed to be pretty bright, and a terror in the boardroom.

She's also easy on the eyes, which is plus for her with most men.

Ferris Air is also on the short list of contractors with the government for an experimental aircraft being developed by the Air Force. Ferris Air has good pilots as well, one of which was a man Bruce used to have a modicum of respect for, before he'd tried to kill them all.

Hal Jordan.

He wondered if Hal was a sore spot for her at all. Only one way to find out. Bruce gets up and walks over to Carol.

"Miss Ferris? Good to see I'm not the only rich person here everyone is hitting up for money." Bruce whispers.

She recognized him as he approached. Bruce Wayne was a little far from home, if home was still Gotham. She wasn't surprised, though. The organizers must have lobbied hard to get him to attend. Leaving him without a handler might not have been so smart. A potential benefactor could wander off and find other amusement.

"Mr. Wayne," she greeted him in return, smiling. "I suppose they think a personal plea would be more effective than a written request with verifiable facts."

"Oh, of course." Bruce says. "Why bother with facts when it's easier to make things up, smile and hope no one looks any deeper?"

This charity was already on his watch list regarding small sums of the money being funneled to an unknown source, but Bruce couldn't tell if the skimming was coming from inside or outside the organization yet. He'd find that out later tonight.

"You look great. Would you like to dance?" he asks.

Agree, compliment, and ask for something. In this case, a dance. All done so smoothly that refusal would not only be churlish, but leave her with the nattering charity minions plying her with champagne.

All in all, an easy choice.

She put her glass on a passing tray. "That's very kind of you, Mr. Wayne, and I'd love to dance."

Bruce takes her hand and inserts himself between her and all her hangers-on as he leads Carol to the dance floor.

The song is slow, melodious and made for talking as the pair moves across the dance floor. Wayne doesn't seem to be nearly as inebriated as he originally looked, as he leads her through the dance.

"So, what did they bribe you with to get you here?" Bruce asks.

"The invitation was delivered by a bodybuilder in a black loin cloth," she answered with a hint of a smile. He was very easy to follow on the dance floor. She had no problems matching his steps. "My secretary experienced instant lust and put the event on my calendar."

"Have you decided whether you're keeping her or letting her go yet?" Bruce chuckles.

"The open bar was a big draw, but I was also told I'd get to meet Carol Ferris, and maybe even dance with her. My pilot couldn't understand why I needed to get to Coast City, ASAP." Bruce says, returning the smile.

"It's hard to find a good accomplice these days and she helps me bury the bodies of my competitors. I think I'll keep her."

She let that bit of outrageous flattery hold for a moment while she nodded at another couple dancing nearby. "If I believed that, Mr. Wayne, I would be unable to say no to any proposal they put in front of me tonight."

"You know what they say: true friends help you move the bodies." Bruce quips.

Her smile thinned the tiniest bit as she clamped down on irritation at her best pilot. "If they were to make my best pilot a better offer, I'm sure I couldn't stand in his way. Like all top aces, he's a bit of a prima donna and adolescent all rolled into one. Careful handling is required to get his best effort behind the stick."

Struck a nerve, did he? He files that away for future reference.

"That's the problem with big business these days. There's almost no loyalty in the work force." Bruce says. "You bring someone in, you teach 'em, train 'em, and then they go to work for the competition."

"Although, any man who quits working for a boss like you might be out of his mind." says the man who has never actually worked a day in his life.

"Some employees arrive already serving one master, so to speak." littlebluerassumfrassumbastards

Oh-kay. Remember where you are. Charity function. Bruce Wayne at his most charming, what does he want, I wonder, and smile. The smile that coaxes a reluctant board to give her more time to get results.

"I find, just as you do I'm sure, that when I pay well and look after my employees, the ones that stay are worth their weight in benefits."

"That's what I hear, at least, Miss Ferris. Better men than I run Wayne Enterprises for me, though they keep me up to date on all the stuff that keeps me in the lifestyle to which I'm accustomed." Bruce says.

"Wayne Enterprises, however, does value its employees and business partners. We strive to build relationships that will last for years to come, even if we're not always working together." Bruce says.

"Perhaps, someday in the future...we can build a relationship of mutual interest and benefits." Bruce says.

"Perhaps we can, Mr. Wayne. I'll look forward to the possibilities. Ferris Air is always in need of good working relationships."

Suspicion bloomed, and Carol was vastly cheered at the prospect. The party was not a waste of her time after all. "Perhaps the next time you're in Coast City we might have lunch and discuss it." She felt it a safe enough offer. Bruce Wayne rarely made it to Coast City according to his press.

"Lunch usually isn't a good time for me, Miss Ferris, so I have a counter-offer. How about dinner next week? I'm going to be overseeing the start-up of a new office here in Coast City, so I'd be available if you are." Bruce says.

"And it can be as fancy or as casual as you like. And please, call me Bruce." he says.

Of course, Bruce Wayne probably didn't see daylight until after lunch. What was she thinking? Other than the fact that her days sometimes began before sunup and didn't stop until well after sundown.

A Wayne Enterprises office in Coast City did change the business map for her and the others. He'd just given her the means to find out a little more about his intentions, if he could be persuaded to part with a few details.

"You might catch me in my casual mode for dinner, Bruce, but next week would be lovely. If you'll have your assistant call my office, my secretary will have my schedule and between the two of them I'm sure they can select a good evening for the two of us."

She smiled, finding something genuinely amusing about it. "If your assistant is male and chooses to show up in a loincloth, who knows what she'll put on my calendar."

"Oh, trust me. Alfred's not going to show up in a loincloth. Not his thing, really. Or at least, it hasn't been since his college days." Bruce jokes.

However, he does mentally remind himself to tell Alfred not to show up in a loincloth. Carol might "forget" to call him after that.

"Next week it is, Miss Ferris." Bruce smiles.

Her gaze followed his. Tomorrow it would be all over the gossip sheets that Carol Ferris and Bruce Wayne spent a significant amount of time in each other's company and speculate if the association continued after the party.

Ah well. Carol had little enough social excitement in her life these days. She could use a little borrowed excitement.

She offered her hand for another dance and opened the conversation again. "The name Alfred is old fashioned enough to suggest a man who's been with your company a long time."

"He also makes a mean Eggs Benedict."

"Sounds like a treasure and you should take very good care of him," Carol said, chuckling over the list of duties. "I'm actually rather envious. I've always said what I needed was not another ace pilot to muck around in my hangar, but a housewife to keep me on track."

"Hey, I hear there are housewives out there that will work for a reasonable fee." Bruce says.

"I may have to resort to an English butler. The kind of hours I keep and the craziness that seems to find me when I'm least expecting it would require me to actually marry a housewife to keep one around longer than a week, and I don't see that happening."

"English butlers can certainly deal with strange proclivities and odd schedules." Bruce says with a knowing grin.

How in the world had they gotten onto this topic?

"Admirers all well and good, but they're a lot like flirting, all attention without intention. At the very least, without my interests at heart, and that's a requirement for someone I'll trust to order me about and keep me on track."

"You and I do sort of have a few of the same problems." Bruce says.

"It's tough to know if someone likes you because you're you, or because of your bank account." Bruce says.

"I've dealt with that a lot. But we're young, we're in good health and we could stand to have some fun." Bruce says.

"So, here's my idea. We leave now, before pompous dinner arrives. My car is out front, so we can get in, find a place that does a good Philly cheesesteak, then find the highest point in the city and talk about how we grew up having to be all business during the day and...still all business at night.

What do you say, Carol? Feeling adventurous?" he asks.

It was quite an offer. One that was smooth and practiced, but nonetheless attractive for the sole reason that it would get her out of here. On Bruce Wayne's arm, true, but out of here and the resulting publicity would die in less that twenty-four hours. Something told her that Bruce Wayne was a man who could take a 'no' if she decided she didn't want to accept any well practiced suggestions on how to end the night.

"I say that I haven't had a really good Philly cheesesteak in a long time."

"Then dinner it is." he says, offering her his hand.

He's pretty sure she's not in on the embezzling from the charity by now, but it doesn't hurt to be sure. Once he has her alone, he can figure her out for sure.

"Hope you don't mind being out late, but I'll make sure I have you back before it gets too late." Bruce says.

She took his hand and felt the weight of a roomful of eyes riveted on them. Some of those eyes seemed a little sharp as women who wanted to spend the night with Bruce Wayne looked daggers at her back. If she were younger, she'd revel in the feeling.

Oh, what the heck. She reveled in it now. She liked being a force to be reckoned with in her little pond, even if it was borrowed for the next few hours.

"I don't mind being out late if the company is interesting. You are definitely not boring."

"What can I say? I try to keep things interesting." Bruce says, leading her out of the building.

Out front, a wizened old man stands before a Black Bentley and nods to Bruce, then turns a charming smile on Carol.

"Miss Ferris, my name is Alfred Pennyworth. I will be ferrying yourself and Master Bruce to any destination you choose this evening. If you require anything, please let me know." Alfred says.

"Alfred, could you please stop hitting on my date? We just met." Bruce says, mock-chidingly.

"Very well, Master Bruce." Alfred says blandly, opening the car door for the two of them.

Carol liked the elderly man immediately. There was something about an English accent that was attractive, especially when the speaker was being charming.

In case you haven't heard, I don't get close to people often. Emotionally close, I mean." he says.

"He told you it was a baseball bat? He's not being honest with you. It's a crowbar." Bruce says.

Well, a crowbar and a shotgun, but really, why explain the bit about the shotgun? He doesn't like it as is, but Alfred says it comes in handy.

"Carol, I think you're watching your words with me. Be blunt. Be frank. Be honest. I can take it." Bruce says.

"Well, if it's blunt you want..." She shifted in the seat to face him. "I love Philly cheesesteak and good conversation, but I'm not a social climber or supermodel. The end of the evening won't include one of us hastily dressing to get home before dawn. And, I'm perfectly capable of using Alfred's crowbar myself. As charming as he is, I'm not a damsel in need of rescue. If that's blunt and honest enough for you, feed me so I can uphold my end of the conversation."

"All right. I can work with that." Bruce says.

"For the record, you're safe from any sexual advances you might be worried about. I didn't come here to try to sleep with you, though I'll say the idea isn't repugnant by any means. You don't look like the type that needs to be saved.

I know that type, and they bore me." Bruce tells her.

"I invited you along tonight because I wanted to know if you're aware of the embezzlement going on at Dennison's Halfway House, the benefit we just left. I have reason to believe that there's mob involvement in the charity, and there are several SEC violations that could be brought against charity and anyone who's donated." Bruce explains.

"I had to figure out if you were in on it, or about to be the unwitting recipient of an audit from the government. I'm glad I found out you're aboveboard.

A prison jumpsuit doesn't become you."

"Good to know I'm not repugnant." Carol was still amused despite the odd turn the conversation had taken. There was, however, a tiny but noticeable relaxing in her shoulders. She let herself sink into the leather seat a bit.

"I was not aware of any embezzlement in the charity. You must know how stringent the rules are when government contracts are involved. One infraction can pull a contract worth millions. I really was there because my secretary put it on my schedule and I decided to check it out. She has a soft spot for halfway houses. Her nephew was in some trouble a few years' back and she's taken an interest in them. I only donate after I've done my own research."

"In any event, any investigation is going to be launched, starting tonight. We got out of there just ahead of the police, who will be looking to speak with the organizers and get to the bottom of things." Bruce says.
