"You know you didn't have to do this, right, Pippi?" Mitzi asks, hugging her friend tightly, probably for a bit longer than she should have.
Most days, Mitzi gets out of bed, and she can fake her way through the day. She can smile and listen when Lily talks about how awesome her mother is, or how well Ash, Dinah and Riley get along with their parents. When Pippi talks about the plans she and her mother have coming up, or when Robin, on rare occasion, talks about her mother, Mitzi is able to sit and listen with rapt attention.
She's able to flirt with Adam about things that will probably never happen or enjoy being a member of the Teen Titans.
Other days, however, like today, the pain crushes her so badly that she all she can do is cry her eyes out when she wakes up, stumble through her day, and cry her eyes out whens he goes to sleep. She tells herself that no one can hear her in her room, or if they can, they aren't paying attention. This is easier than believing that someone can hear her and feels /sorry/ for her, because she'd rather not have that.
After dinner, however, Mitzi stands at her mother's grave and asks the same question she's asked every for the last few months.
"Why me?"
There's no answer, though; there never will be. There are a lot of things that she'll never get answers to, now that her mother is gone.
"Happy Mother's Day, Annie. I...I know we didn't always get along, but...I miss you." she says.
