Human in the Mist
Orgo was never one to remain cooped up in Gorilla City, no matter how much Uncle Nnamdi pressured him to do so. Orgo wanted to see the world outside the city. The world his adoptive father, Sam, told him so much about. But most of all, he wanted to see the legendary superheroes. He was but a boy when the Justice League had saved Gorilla City from one of Grodd's attempts to conquer it. He couldn't get them out of his mind since. He wanted to know more about these unique beings..but he'd never know much beyond the information in the city's computer archives.

For now Orgovar would just have to content himself with observing the nearby humans. Mentally compel poachers to go away, convince drillers to go elsewhere, basic GC protection protocols. With his grandfather's death, Uncle Nnamdi was determined to remain apart from the human world. Orgo believed he knew better. Humanity was ever-expanding. Gorilla City couldn't hide forever. He sighed, no use dwelling on it. He went about his patrol.

Rosie hadn't managed to make it on this one, either, what with their mother's health. And a gentleman doesn't try to drag a date to the Congo. So Jed had chartered a private jet and was handling this photo shoot alone.

He'd gotten a beautiful shot of the birds.

Orgo heard something in the distance, something that didn't sound like a an animal. He made certain he had adequate cover before sending out a telepathic probe to ascertain the intentions of the intruder.

And Orgo will find, completely unawares, the brain of a grade-A human hippie. He might notice the remnants of immense psychic defenses that essentially collapsed from lack of reinforcement years ago, leaving him an open and utterly unmalicious book. Jed is taking pictures.

Hmm, what was this? His probe indicated this human once had a manner of powerful psychic defenses, but apparently they faded from lack of use. A metahuman! And apparently a benevolent one if his scan was right and he had no reason to believe it wasn't. Still, better safe than sorry. It wouldn't have been the first time brainwashed humans were sent against the city.

Orgo moved from his spot with a light sprint to make his way closer. He continued to remain in the brush.

Jed thinks he hears something in the brush and turns around a little getting a bit of cover to avoid scaring anything.

With closer proximity, he can get an unobstructed scan of the man's mind. There was no mental interference at all. The man was just taking pictures. Still..the evidence of mental powers intrigued Orgo. He moved a little further in, probably more than he should have. It was likely he'd be spotted.

"Wow," Jed whispers to himself, lining up a shot of that fantastic gorilla coming into view. "Hey there, big fella," he says softly.

Orgo realized he'd been spotted, but didn't panic. For the moment he simply played the role of his less-civilized kin and made as if he were simply looking for dinner. He turned slightly as if by noise, rather than recognizing he was being spoken to.

"Just me, totally non-threatening Jed," Jeff continues gently. Great hulking silverback, right there. What are the chances of getting a shot like that when sneaking into this area by oneself? He'd lucked out.

...That's what it was, right?

Orgo had inadvertently picked up on the surface thoughts of the human. He almost smiled at the irony, but quickly stopped himself from forming such a gesture. He tilted his head, as if examining this new animal in his home.

"Yeah, yeah, total weirdo on your turf. Don't worry. I'm not getting any closer. I'll be gone before you know it. Hop back in the jet and zoom, off to Star City."

Orgo visibly jumped a little in surprise at the mention of Star City. He quickly tried to regain his composure, but he knew that name! It was the home of Green Arrow! A member of the Justice League no less! Orgo tried to center himself, though he began to pace a bit, his knuckles almost ungorilla-like off the ground.

The gorilla seemed agitated at the mention of Star City of all things. And that wasn't very normal....

...Jed carefully put down his camera, slowly raising his hands. "...Just don't tell me your name is Grodd? My sister's already said she'll kill me if I get myself killed."

Orgo stopped entirely at the mention of his adopted grandfather. Debate raged in his head. Should he alter his memory? Should he run and pretend he was a normal gorilla? This was probably really stupid, but Orgo couldn't pass this chance up.

He stood up on two legs as was common among his people. "Your sister need not worry. My name's Orgovar, though you may call me Orgo."

"And you, Jed Walker. I normally don't make a habit of revealing myself, but..your mention of Star City encouraged me to do so. I was but a boy when the Justice League first came to Gorilla City, but I have never forgotten it."

Jed grins. "I know the feeling. Never met the Justice League, but I was obsessed with the Fury as a kid. Used to imagine her saving me from...stuff." Jed tries to shove the stuff in question to the back of his mind. This is no time to think of the darkness, the stench, the rat bites, the beatings.

"Yeah, Star City's got a bit of a superhero presence even today. It was the big site for the major free-for-all when the Green Lanterns had another one of their Zombie Wars. My sister was worried as hell. We actually live in Seattle, but her son's in Star City. He says the heroes made a really good showing of themselves."

Orgo frowned a little. He wasn't reading the man's mind so he didn't get much, but there was a definite afterimage of darkness..a common theme among those with traumatized paths. Still, it was not his place to pry.

"Really?" Orgo caught himself before he started bouncing on his toes a little. He wished he could have seen it, fought side by side with them. Still, perhaps it was for the best. Zombies were..disturbing. "I imagine they did. My people picked up images of these creatures. Some of us wanted to help fight the dead, but our leaders determined it was best to stay hidden." Orgo's tone indicated he had been one of the former.

"Your nephew sees heroes often?"

"Sometimes. He tries to downplay it when I ask him, sound more sophisticated." That's what he guessed the tone in GK's voice when he said 'Sometimes' meant, anyway. "But it sounds like the people on the street see and hear more of the action than the newspapers sometimes."

"Yeah, in situations like that, it's a tough call, I'd guess."

Orgo found himself nodding.

"Indeed it is. I do not begrudge our city's leaders doing what they feel best. However times are changing. If Gorilla City remains isolated..I'm sorry. An old arguement and one I shouldn't bother you with. You are a guest in my home afterall," Orgo said with a smile.

His mind began to wonder a little. "How did you come here, Jed Walker? Plane, boat?"

"Hey, I may not understand the details, but I know how frustrating it is for reformers. You've got my sympathies. Just keep at it; the squeaky wheel gets the grease."

"Chartered jet. Best way to get some of the shots I hoped for without...entanglements."

"Sure doesn't help the isolationism in your city, either, does it? And you're just some young punk trying to make them listen. I know the feeling." "Political belief has grown divisive at home. Even though who believe in isolation and those who believe in joining the rest of the world have different views and theories. It's exasperating at times," Orgo confirmed. His face contorted in a look of mild confusion. "We patrol the border to make certain no outsiders inadvertently discover the city and there hasn't been a superhero in Gorilla City in years." Orgo says the last part a little wistfully.

"So... you're trying to form a foreign policy where hardly anyone, particularly not you, has experience with the foreign. Experience counts, let me tell you. People listen when you can talk about what you've seen with your own eyes. They listen more if you've got a thick checkbook when you say it, I'll have to admit, but experience is still important. Useful."

"That is true," Orgo admitted. "The last of our people to live amongst humans was my adopted father, Sam Simeon. Another hasn't been allowed to go into human society since my uncle took over after my grandfather Solovar's death."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Sam Simeon. I think he might've been in the papers, once. Sounds vaguely familiar. So... it'd be a big family stir if you hitchhiked your way to the states, huh?" Pause. "Maybe bring the issue front and center in debate." Jed packed his camera.

"You mean..propose to my uncle to become our next observer?" Orgo said it with a little bit of shock, but also eagerness. He scratched his chin. "I won't deny I've longed to see the human world and its heroes. However, even if I got him to agree, how would I get there? Where would i go?"

"Well, you could get a ride to Star City with a random sympathetic photographer. If you can't get a passport, I'd have to let you off before customs, and then you'd have to figure it out for yourself, but there's probably some superhero niche to be made.... can you do the ...mindtrick things like in the news articles? Maybe make yourself a bit of a 'somebody else's business' field to get by until you can find a place to hide out?"

"You would take me? I..I don't know what to say," Orgo said, a little surprised. "Mind trick? Oh, you're referring to temporary mind manipulation. Yes, I can do that. My people could create a fake passport if my uncle agrees." He wasn't going to let this opportunity pass him by. "I will find a way. I must return to Gorilla City. Is there a place I can meet you later?"

It had been a vociferous argument to say the least. Nnamdi had been less than enthusiastic about appointing a new ambassador to the human world. Orgo's fellows supported him, saying that efforts to learn more of the human world was essential. The conservatives pointed out that their prior dealings with humanity had led to Solovar's death. Eventually it was his father, Sam, that pointed out that Orgo's findings may finally put the issue to rest between the two groups. Orgo was known for his honesty and wouldn't lie about his findings. It was with reservation that Nnamdi agreed, outfitting Orgo with supplies, some minor technology, as well as a few official documents that would hopefully provide Orgo with some diplomatic authority if need be.

He felt a combination of excitement and trepidation as he made his way to the location that Jed specified.

Jed laughs, then attempts to defend his reasoning. "Well, a gorilla with clothing, that's Weird Stuff. To be dealt with or ignored, depending. Whereas a gorilla without clothes, the average American's going to figure there's a dangerous wild animal who can't be reasoned with. But let's head out."

"Yes, most of my people have it to one degree or another. Though most of us only possess rudimentary ability. I am a bit more powerful than the average gorilla in that regard." There's no arrogance or bragging in his tone, just being factual. "Even when not actively probing someone's mind, I can pick up glimpses of surface thoughts. It's still considered rude though to read someone's mind without permission though."
