Returning home (J'anna)
Tim unlocked the door and stepped into the apartment, setting his bags down on the floor. It was good to be home again, though he'd gotten the call this morning about his apartment. The repairs were done and he could move in again anytime he wanted. He doesn't know how to feel about that, but if things with J'anna implode, it'll be best to have another place to go.

Things in Gotham had gone as well as they could have and Marissa was a major help in that. He was sorry he couldn't do more to find Keith, but he promised her he'd keep working on it. Now, he just had to not tell Lian and Mia anything so he didn't get their hopes up and hope that Marissa could convince Keith to end this charade and spare his family more pain.

He'd forgotten the baggage he'd left behind in Star City.

He keeps the lights off as the sun goes down, sitting in the dark to brood.

J'anna had come to dread coming home at night so much that she'd pushed her own patrols later and later and later so she didn't have to be alone in the apartment. Tim was gone. He hadn't even bothered to tell her himself, though she took his scattered left-behind belongings as a hopeful sign though the more days that passed, the less bright that hope became. Outwardly she went on as though all were well, but as GK had discovered it was a mask.

J'anna was drinking a lot of milk these days. It helped make what little sleep she got dreamless.

It was three in the morning when J'anna slipped quietly in the door of her apartment, wandered in the kitchen, pulled out a pint of whole milk, then sat down at the table in the dark, her head on the cool wooden surface as she near-silently cried.

She didn't notice the bags. She was too tired to notice that she wasn't quite alone.

The sound of the door opening and someone shuffling inside caught his attention first. He wondered how long he'd dozed off for and how much shadow he had left to get some work done.

He sits up on the couch and looks in J'anna's direction, though he can't see her in the dark.

"Is that you, J'anna?" he asks.

J'anna sat bolt upright at the table, quickly swiping tears from her green face. Two red, distinctly Martian eyes glowed in the darkness.

"Tim?" Some more shuffling noise as J'anna got up and moved in the dark toward him.

"Hey you. I just got in today. Thought I'd wait for you to come home so we could talk." Tim says.

"Didn't think you'd be out so late." he says quietly.

"I didn't know you'd be back. I've been staying out pretty late." Her own voice is quiet as well. "Patrol distracts me from being here."

She sits down tentatively.

"Everything go well in Gotham?"

"Yeah, it did. I went because the daughter of an old friend needed help." Tim says, looking down into his lap.

No. Marissa was right. He needed to be honest with J'anna about Stephanie, too. About everything.

"Wait. The little girl I went to help...she's the daughter of my friend Stephanie Brown. Stephanie and I used to work together, back when I worked with Batman. We dated, too. We were dating when Batman and I fell out.

When I left town, I left without telling her, J'anna. I hadn't seen her in years until the night she tried to kill me. I didn't even know she was dead. I just knew that she'd want her daughter to have a better life and I had to honor that." Tim says quietly.

"That's why I left without telling you. There wasn't much time to waste because some very bad people were looking for her...and because I didn't want to tell you about what Stephanie and I meant to each other." he says.

"I didn't mean to fall in love with Giselle when I got on that plane, but I did. Alvin Draper didn't have the baggage that Tim Drake did, so I pretended to be him. I just wanted to be anyone else than 'That Guy that used to be Robin', and so I threw myself into the role. That cost Giselle her life and that was my fault." he says.

"After Giselle died, I was in a really bad place. I tried to everything to make the pain go away instead of dealing with it, but nothing helped. My old friend Rose Wilson showed up and literally kicked my ass back into shape. She saved my life.

I'm telling you all of this because I need to be honest about where we're going from here and I don't want anymore secrets between us, no matter happens after this moment."

J'anna listens to him quietly. The things he was telling her were things she knew nothing about. Not who Stephanie was or how important she had been, the fine details about Giselle, this friend named Rose. She was left with only more questions. Was the child his? Where was she now? Was she alright? Was he alright? What did he need?

But there was one question that burned and J'anna sat silent for several minutes before she could even find the courage to give it voice.

"What am I to you?"

Her voice was more of a whispered squeak than anything else and she felt her entire body burn with knots of fear that the answer might be a familiar one, one she'd heard over and over and over in life: you're a good friend, J'anna.

"I was operating on the belief that we're dating, so you'd be my girlfriend, in that case." Tim says warily. He's not sure what brought the question on or where this is going.

"Did I misunderstand something?" he asks.

"No. Not at all. Just spot-checking. Don't have a die for you to roll or anything so I had to improvise."

"I just wanted to make sure you hadn't gotten perspective and decided to get rid of me. Happens sometime. I make an excellent scapegoat and sidekick but I'm not so good as a leading lady, if you will."

Pause.

"I really missed you."

"Hey, I missed you, too." he says, giving her a hug.

"I should have talked to you before I left and I'm sorry I didn't. I won't make that mistake again." Tim says.

"Leaving a message with the least reliable person I know wasn't real keen either, pal." She hugs him gratefully and sighs a bit as she curls up tight to him.

"I thought you didn't want me anymore because I had died."

"That wasn't it, J'anna. I wanted you to get over your issues with your dad, and you weren't. I could see how it was eating at you, too." Tim says.

"How are things with you two, anyway? Have you tried talking to him?"

"We've talked. I wouldn't say that we're close at this point, but we talk. It's something. My dad and I have long had issues, though. It started long before I went crazy on him while a corpse."

"I have." J'anna smiled. "We're both still figuring things out. She's really neat. I totally get my tail from her."

"I'm really glad things are getting better for you. While I was helping Stephanie's daughter, I ran into someone she was training. I didn't know that Steph was still active, let alone training help. Batman wouldn't have approved of it, but I told her that she could call me if she needed something." Tim says.

"I doubt she will, though. She didn't seem very receptive at the time, after I told her about Steph." he says.

"But now that I'm back, I've got to get Neon Knights off of the ground and help clean up the Triangle, like I said I would." Tim says.

"I've set her up with a new family and have a friend of mine watching out for her whenever possible. She needs routine in her life, so I tried to give her that as much as possible." Tim says.

"That's good. It certainly sounds like you've put a great deal of thought and care into the entire situation and I'm sure the girl will benefit from it." J'anna nods.

"Your help with the Triangle is greatly appreciated. Nothing's really been handled for the last little while. And as for your Neon Knights organization I expect that will go over well. With schools getting back into session in the next couple of weeks it's almost perfect timing."

"This is the right time to make sure kids stick with school and keep trying to graduate and give back to the community. Not many people tried hard back in Gotham, except for Bruce Wayne. He gave back to the community as best he could and then some." Tim says.

"I'm hoping to find that same kind dedication and resolve in Star City. I've got a few people who'll back me, but it's the rest of the city's rich and famous I need to reach. Sadly, a lot of them are part of the problem, too." he says.

"Then you shame them, subtly at first, into being better." J'anna smiled. "Embarrassment works sometimes in making change."
