She's probably better when it comes to stitching than he is at his best, and given that he's far from that right now, it's a good thing she took over.
In his delirious state, the meaning of her words doesn't quite register. If he remembers this later then he'll realize what she's saying, but as it is now he's oblivious.
"Didn't want you to be blackmailed," he mumbles, trying to keep talking to stay awake.
