He absolutely fumes with rage. This wasn't about ego. It was about being good, good enough to be Robin, good enough to perhaps be as good as the Robins before him, and...well Batman was out of reach. But he needed to know he wasn't subpar and second best at everything because he constantly felt that way. That he'd never be good enough, or fulfill expectations.
"I did not directly confront them, I made it a point not to make it a all out brawl." And now his eyebrow positively twitches. "And when have I not had your back when it was needed? When?! I should be better?! Then maybe I guess I'm not fucking good enough!" He's in a rage now, and it's clear that he's hurting. A lot.
