 Despite attempts to cheer him up, Max had been even more insular since having to shoot Ruth and Jay during their episode. His current habit he'd developed was taking things apart and putting them back together again.

"Well enough," Max replies. He looks at her with a curious expression. "You're sorry? Ruth..I shot you." The stoic facade starts to fade a bit.

Ruth doesn't get too agitated, but, "Just... for the record, I don't believe in predestination. I mean, I believe in providence, but that's not the same thing, not the same 'it's going to be like this no matter what you do' attitude. Everything's interdependent, and that means you do have to work for things, and.... trust me, Max, Jay's and my relationship hasn't been a perpetual cakewalk. Before or after the avatar stuff."
