So Much For "Smokeless" Candles... [open to JLA]
Magical training could be such a pain in the butt. This particular assignment, for example, had required that Alina figure out how to get power to something electronic without having a cord break any of the protective circles she used when she was experimenting. She'd been clever though, and put it off until after Halloween, and then cleared a few dollar stores and craft stores out of all their cheapest holiday fiddly things.

The end result, so far, is that Alina's sitting in the middle of one of the training rooms in Justice League of America headquarters, surrounded by three concentric binding circles chalked on the floor in blue, black, and white. There are two piles on the outside of the largest circle, one of cheap battery-included horrors and one of cheap battery-included horrors whose insides have been reduced to slag. She currently has her head bowed over the black electric tea light candle cradled in her and is muttering to herself as she tries to turn it purple without frying it to death.

But hey, once she figures out how to do this, she can start trying to do things to technology with her magic other than instantly destroy it.

The casing on the candle turns the same color blue as the smoke that comes out of the battery pack.

"Ugh!"

Sam had come by the HQ to do a little target practice training. Walking by the training rooms Sam saw Alina doing some really strange looking magic stuff if he had to guess.

"So what are you doing," Sam asked into the room a little bit confused.

"Living down to expectations and being a sitting tech bane," Alina quips, standing up in the circle and rolling her shoulders. She's not looking forward to breaking and re-drawing all of her circles.

"Um. Do you want to talk about it," Sam says putting down his bow. He didn't really know all that much about magic but it really did seem like she needed a break and probably could use a talk.

"Not much to talk about, really," Alina says with a shrug, breaking the innermost line with the toe of her boot. It snaps, hisses, and briefly bursts into green flame before vanishing. "My magic doesn't like technology. It likes to kill it instantly. I'm trying to figure out how to make it not do that so that I don't always leave trails of busted surveillance equipment in my wake."

"Not going to lie I really don't know much about magic and Connor likes to keep things low tech," Sam says, "Maybe you could check the JLA files for someone who knows more about magic that might be able to help out with that sort of thing."

"Did you think I made it all the way to the JLA without a mentor?" Alina asks with a laugh, dragging her boot through the second line. It peels back off the floor like old paint and disperses like it was never there. "I've been learning from Mistress Thirteen since I was five. This is homework."

"Like I said I don't know much about all that magic stuff," He says with a shrug. He didn't even know who that thirteen person was.

"That's what teammates and the databased are for, I guess," Alina quips as she breaks the third circle, then jumps when it shrieks and vanishes. "It's not a big deal. It'll be a big deal when I figured out how to not do it."

She picks up a plastic light-up ring, and retrieves her chalk again. "Hope I'm not distracting you from your training or anything."

"And I'm not really much for reading either," Sam says scratching the back of his head at all this magic stuff.

"I'm in no hurry," he says reaching down to his bow, "I'm pretty good with this even without a little target practice."

"Teammates and text-to-speech technology, then," Alina says, sticking out her tongue. She closes her eyes and concentrates, breathing in slowly and out again the same way. She does it three times before bending down to trace the innermost circle on the floor again with the white chalk. There's a subtle change in the room as she does so, like as if the altitude of the headquarters had shifted or as if someone had turned on some sort of electrical generator.

"I'd rather just hit things. Much simpler and easier," Sam says smirking. Sam could feel the change in the room. "That was weird," He says mostly to himself.

"Magic," Alina explains, glancing up and grinning. "Just because we can't measure scientifically how it interacts with the world doesn't mean that it doesn't."

She repeats the breathing exercise again and traces a circle in black inside the white one. Then she lifts her left hand, palm up, and pushes out with her right, causing the white circle to rise to about the height of her head and the black to scurry beneath it. Then the white one lowers to the ground again, like it was perfectly ordinary chalk that didn't float at all.

"Hey I've been to Nanda Parbat," Sam says, "I know there are things in our world we can't explain."

"Oh, so you do have a method through which you like to learn about things," Alina says, winking at him as she traces a third circle in blue chalk. "I was wondering."

"Hey it pretty easy to learn that when you see a monk with no powers catch a bullet with his bare hands using only skill," Sam says with a shrug.

Alina gestures to lift the black and white circle, and slides the blue circle out with a swing of her foot. The circles settle back to the floor one at a time.

"Careful, that's how it starts. Then the next thing you know, you're reading for fun."

"That's not likely to happen," Sam says. "I still don't like books that don't have pictures in them." He never really had much use or time for them growing up anyways.

"That's what they all say," Alina says, settling down cross-legged in the middle of her circles. "We may as well change your code-name to 'Four-Eyes' now."

"Yes because that's a great code name for a sharpshooter that doesn't wear glasses," Sam says with a laugh. "But the best use I ever found for a book was burning it to stay warm."
