Rex's own actions are guiding by rage, fear and love. Rage for being unable to stop Darkseid's abduction of Hope, fear that they are already too late to save her and love for the girl who's always been there for him without fail.
Even when he accidentally insulted her cooking.
Rex slashes a man down with his axe, then kicks another in the head. He doesn't care if they don't get up again; throwing in with Darkseid absolves him of pity for them.
"We've gotta get out of here! If he's that concerned about keepin' us in here, that means there's somewhere else he /doesn't/ want us to be! And that's probably where Hope is!" Rex yells over the commotion as he bashes down yet another inmate.
