"I never had any grandmas," Alina says from the marginal safety of under the bed. She'd woken up with the others and immediately retreated to a space where it would be hard for anyone to grab her, just like mommy and daddy had taught her. "You're stupid and lying and you're gonna be sorry when the Blue Beetle comes to rescue me!" Beat. "The rest of you can be rescued too."
