Acclimatizing
His reunion with his people had gone pretty much as he expected. A few were overjoyed to see him, a few were outraged by his mere presence, and the majority didn't know how to react to him. Thor offered them a village in Asgard where they could be safe and under the protection of the Asgardians, to which the grateful Korbinites accepted. When Bill offered to take them, they refused. To them the destruction and death was too new, and many blamed him due to his negligence. Thus Bill had returned to Earth.

"This is going to be..an experience," he muttered to himself.

He saw the looks of passerbys as he walked through the city. He'd gotten mixed reactions, much like those from his own people. Some smiled and waved, recognizing him. Others shrank away from his presence. A few had yelled "mutie" and threw objects at him. Bill grumbled to himself. He would have to find proper lodgings. Thor had offered Bill a home in Asgard, but he declined. If he was going to protect his new world, he must not fall into the negligence that had cost the Korbinites their home. No, he'd need an alternative.

And a wandering alien will draw attention, even in New York City - and word spreads through various channels to many ears.

"What ho, Beta Ray Bill!"

Hercules, Avenger and ally of Thor, has come seeking the Korbinite - with a smile on his face, and waving as though this were the most natural meeting in the world.

"I had heard you had been seen wandering the streets - in need of direction, mayhap?"

Bill turns at the voice.

"Hercules! It is good to see a familiar face!" Bill returns the wave. "Indeed. I am still unfamiliar with this world. I am..seeking lodgings."

He approaches, clapping an arm around the shoulders of the alien thunderer.

"Aye? I think I may be able to help with that problem. It is quite fortunate that I was made aware of your presence. The mortals have an amazing communications technology called 'Twitter', you see."

"I agree. I have never been here long enough to truly accustom myself to it." Bill raises an eyebrow. "Twitter? Do humans still use avian messengers?"

"You could describe it thus, after a fashion, but it is simply a computerized equivalent of a town crier. But enough, you have a problem, and the son of Zeus will not rest until it is resolved. Lodging!"

Hercules furrows his brow for a moment.

"In New York City, that may be a conundrum worthy of the Gods, indeed. Tell me - do you smoke, or keep pets?"

"Um, only when I call down lightning with Stormbreaker." Bill rubs his head a bit. "Plus the humans keep comparing me to an Earth animal called a horse. Is that a manner ofpet?"

"We shall not mention Stormbreaker to any potential landlord, then. And though you be of equine visage, that shall not matter with Hercules to vouch for you. And sufficient currency."

Bill pulls something from a pouch on his belt.

"Do humans accept gold? It is something I have left over from my time in Asgard."

"Aye, most will take it readily enough if they believe it to be real, but you will not get fair value. Instead, I can recommend a banker friend of mine who is used to converting gold into the currency of the realm."

"Oh, indeed. Of course, at first it was easy enough to find places to stay for a night at a time, but once I knew I wished to prolong my stay in the world of mortals, I had to plan. Fortunately, by that time, I had many friends to ask for advice."

"I see," Bill said, listening intently. "What else should I know about?"

Hercules beams.

"The drink, of course! The mortals have so many varieties of drink that the mind staggers to envision them all. I, myself, own several bar establishments in this city and around the world."

"I admit the urge to get drunk sounds very appealing after everything that's happened. Still I have no desire to draw the ire of the local police force."

"Indeed. The mortals have even criminalized moderate carousing as something they call 'drunken disorderly conduct' - but it only applies if you disturb the public. If you care for a drink, then, we can make use of one of my own bars and have little fear of legal obstacles."

"My friend, that's the best offer I've had since I returned to this planet." Bill said frankly. "Lead the way."

"The nearest is but a few blocks away. Onward!"

Cheered at the prospect of some mid-day drinking, Hercules is all too happy to lead the way.
