Battle of the Bands
The orange-and-black posters are put up at various locations around the city, though they are concentrated most heavily near the clubs and bars that advertise live entertainment, or 20 and under nights.

The fliers read simply:

WHAT: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST- BATTLE OF THE BANDS

WHEN: 2-7-10

WHERE: The Popular Outcast

WHO: YOU

1st Place- $20, 000

2nd Place- $10, 000

3rd Place- $5,000

BRING YOUR A-GAME AND ROCK THE HOUSE!

(Note: No alcohol served during this event as minors may attend.)

Julian supposed the idea wasn't terrible, but he was skeptical when Paulo brought it up. Then again, how else was he going to find who he was looking for?

Ok, so the band was picking up steam, and flyers with a picture of a velociraptor with a guitar were starting to get good spots in all the counterculture clubs in the city. But 20 grand was too good to pass up at least having a look at. With Pauline stepping up as lead vocalist, he knew they had the talent too.

He waits his turn - this is going to be a crowded list, and then steps into the club holding the contest. Time to find out where he signed up.

If they're not carding at the moment, Pauline will tag along, sticking very close to DJ.

They will both notice that the club isn't carding and that there are people of all ages here. Some bands even brought their children. There were three different lines leading from the dance floor, though the place wasn't quite as crowded as one might have believed.

A Spanish man walked up and down the line, making sure no one was trying to push anyone else out of place, while the three tables were manned by two Caucasian women and one man that seemed to be of Caucasian decent, but the slightly darker tone of his skin could have branded him as Spanish or Italian, possibly even German.

Julian Howard, the man at the table and owner of club, seemed bored with most of the people he was meeting. A few biker types, a pop group, and even a heavy-Goth group all looked the parts they were portraying, but he didn't really get anything from them.

When his eyes on settled on DJ and Pauline, he actually smiled as though he knew them.

"All right. Going to need a contact number, the name of the band, and whoever is leading this outfit, please." he said, sliding a sign-up sheet toward the pair. The guy looked familiar, but the girl, he was certain he'd seen during his week of club crawling in New York. He needed to know what other clubs were doing with their live entertainment so he could do it better.

The sound stage behind Julian was much larger, and the mics and sound equipment were all brand new, top-of-the-line equipment. Anyone who played on Julian's stage would sound amazing.

"I'm sorry." he says, as they look over the information, "have I see you two at another venue?" he smiles, at Pauline in particular.

DJ hands over the flyer, a photo of his 'incident' that the band has been using as its primary advertisement, turning a near disaster, averted by Pauline, into what's made their name in the counterculture scene. The flyer depicts a velociraptor with a guitar - immediately after his discovery of his mutation.
"I don't know, you look too clean cut to follow the punk scene. DJ Whedon with N.I.C.H. Machinegun. This is Pauline, our lead singer."

Pauline just nods affirmingly at DJ's statement.

"Of course. Yuppie looking type like me can't have any interest in punk music." Julian challenges, smiling the whole time. He looks at the flyer, and notices the velociraptor; he's of N.I.C.H Machinegun, and he's almost surprised they'd want to participate in this event.

Almost.

"I've heard your band. I liked your CD. You've all got some real talent, and I'm glad you're entering the competition. You're edgy, tough, and you can get people in the door. That's what this competition is about, aside from the music." Julian said, extending a hand.

"I'm Julian Howard. I own the Popular Outcast, and I think we'll be seeing a lot more of each other. You two are welcome to check out the sound stage and get an idea of how you'll set up for the performance. You'll receive a phone call tomorrow night letting you know your stage time.

Four song set, bring your best material and your A-game. Winner is decided at the end. And the flyer doesn't mention it, but first place winners get to headline shows here exclusively for one month after. Three to four nights a week.

Hope you two are ready for stiff competition." Julian says, looking over to Paulo.

DJ shrugs. There's weirder fashion statements. He extends a hand in return.

"We'll take a look. If you've got the CD, you know there's two publically known mutants in the band, right?" Yeah, that's been helping them get some gigs, and keeping them out of most of the places that pay like this gig could.

"We're ready." Yeah, they can rock this place. Pauline is going to sound awesome in here.

Pauline nods in a 'nice to meet you' kind of way.

Pauline thinks that's a very nice stage indeed up there. Stable -- some of their usual places got a bit worn down from all the activity they saw. "Looks good," she says to DJ quietly.

Julian nodded.

"I know that you're both mutants, and there's nothing wrong with that. Everyone's welcome here." Julian says.

Several groups respond to that statement by walking out of line and out the door. There's even a grumble about "mutie scum" from someone, and Julian notes where that came from before looking back at DJ and Pauline.

"I'm looking forward to seeing N.I.C.H. Machinegun play the Outcast. Very much forward to it." Julian said, offering a hand.

DJ is cautious - welcoming mutants isn't usually something they get in a place this nice, even if the punk crowd has embraced them. But he shakes the hand.

"When can we come in and do a soundcheck?"

"Go ahead and talk to Paulo over at table three when you're done here and let him know you want to do a soundcheck. He'll get you in the timeslot you want." Julian said.

"Also, let him know if there's anything extra or special you guys need and we'll make it happen."

DJ nods, thinking this over. He'll have to read the contest guidelines /very/ carefully, and work it over with mom. Useful having a home lawyer like that. This is bordering on too good to be true.

"We won't know til after the sound check, but I'll go over that with your tech people. Thanks. Anything else you need from us?"

Julian looks over the paperwork.

"You've provided your name, band name and a contact number. You've read the rules...oh, make sure to take a copy for your personal records....and once you talk to Paulo, you'll be set for your soundcheck." Julian said, taking the information.

"The only thing I need from you now, DJ and Pauline...is for you to do what you said you're going to do.

You come here Sunday and you bring your legion of fans with you. You rock the place. And if you're good enough.." he smiled, "you take $20,000 home with you.

After that, the rest is history." he says, extending a hand to Pauline and DJ.

"I'll see you both very soon."
