Making the Grade
"Melissa, you have the makings of a great student, if you'd just apply yourself to this course. To that end, I'm going to suggest a tutor for you. She's the daughter of an old student of mine, and she's picked up this subject as easily as her father did. If anyone can help you understand this class, it's her."  Doc Connors said.

That was three days ago.

Melissa Frost sighed just as loudly now as she did then, sitting in the study hall waiting for May Parker. The first name lost points, but the last name made up for it. Melissa didn't want to fail Chemistry, but she also didn't want these tutoring sessions taking up too much of her time. John King was still out there, and the Boss could call at any time with a job for her; she needed to be ready to move.

But she also had to keep her promise to her father.

She sat at the table, staring down into the Chemistry book, waiting for the symbols inside to mystically make sense. This was nothing like spellcrafting; she understood that with no problems.

Any day now, Parker. I still have a life to lead after this. she thought to herself.

May knew that she'd done right when she signed up as a tutor for a work-study job. It fit well around her schedule with classes, the gymnastics team, and a couple of other outside activities that she could work everything out easily.

Chem book in her shoulder bag, May made her way into the study hall, keeping her eyes peeled for the girl that fit Doctor Connors' description. When she saw her, May walked over to the table where the girl was seated.

"Melissa Frost?" she asked, smiling at her.

Melissa looked up and found herself smiling despite her initial annoyance.

"May Parker?" she asked. Yes, this girl definitely looked like the tutor type, but there was an underlying beauty that Melissa saw underneath the glasses.

"Sorry, that was rude. Yeah, I'm Melissa Frost and I'm hoping that Doc Connors is right about you being able to help me with Chemistry. It's like reading Greek to me." she says.

"Look, I don't know what your schedule is like but mine is a bit crazy...so I'm willing to work out how often we can do this, and make it worth you while to tutor me. I can pay you for your time, too." she says.

May smiled, nodding. "Yep. That would be me."

Technically speaking, she didn't need the glasses, advanced spider-vision and all that jazz.

"Chemistry's like a second language to me," she said with a smirk, "It's in the genes."

She nodded. She understood hectic scheduling. "I'm sure we can work something out. I'm fairly busy myself, class, gymnastics, I understand crazy scheduling. And you don't need to pay me," she smiled. "The school does. Work study is a beautiful thing."

"Okay, I'm willing to concede that Doc Connors knows what he's doing." Melissa smiled.

"Well, I'm Melissa, you can call me Melissa or Mel, though. I'm usually not available after 6pm. I've got family stuff to take care of, but I'm usually free from 11am to 1pm each day. Then I've got World Lit.

Luckily, I like that class." she says.

"Well, I'd like to make it worth your time to help me, and I've heard work-study programs don't always pay so well. Do you tutor anyone else?" she asks, not wanting to push her way into May's schedule if it's uber-busy.

"He normally does, Dad spoke very highly of him." May smiled, taking a seat.

"Huh. I think we might be in the same World Lit class, actually." she said, "It is a good class."

May shook her head. "Nope. You're my only student. Gymnastics only gives me enough time to have only one student."

"Wait...you tutor, do work-study, master Chem, and you're on the Gymnastics team?" Melissa asked, trying to keep her jaw from dropping. That was pretty impressive.

"I suppose next you're going to say you also manage to save the world at some point while you're spinning all those plates at once?"

Come to think of it, May IS in her World Lit Class. Now she has a name to match the face of the girl who kept answering Professor Stein's questions.

"Yeah, I love history. I wanted to be a teacher once upon a time." she says.

May shrugged. "What can I say? I'm just a bit of an over-achiever. I like to keep busy, I guess. I could never really sit still for more than five minutes."

May nodded, smiling. "Some people find it boring, I find it fascinating." She leaned forward on the table, holding her chin in her hand. "Why the sudden change of heart? Don't like kids?" She grinned.

"Oh, I like kids just fine. I'm just not someone who should be teaching children." Melissa says, declining to elaborate further.

"I agree with you on keeping busy, though. My dad's favorite game to play was 'Let's see how long Melissa can sit still for'. Of course, after five minutes he'd have to find something new to entertain me with." she chuckled.

"How do you like gymnastics? Guys must come to all your practices." Melissa jibed.

"I understand that," May said, "I don't have the patience for teaching."

"I completely blame my parents for that," May laughed, "My mom had me doing fifty different activities when I was younger. Said that it was good for my 'social growth'. Or something like that."

"I love it," she said, laughing, "The guys hang around the gym, sure. Mostly oggle at how someone as tall as me doesn't smack her head on the uneven bars."

"Hey, if you've got it, flaunt it. I would break my neck trying to do a backflip or a cartwheel, so I stick to cheering for people that can do it with no trouble. Go May!" she cheesy, pumping her fist like an air-headed cheerleader, before laughing.

"By the way, when you end up on an Olympic team and win the gold medal, I get to say I knew you when." Melissa joked.

"See, parents put kids into all kinds of nutty activities when their little, then wonder why they have no attention span later on. Of course, it could be TV, but my mother never let me watch more than an hour. Dad hated that during football season." she laughed.

"So, where's a good place to eat around here? I saw that place called Big Nick's, but I haven't had time to go. Have you been there?" she asked.

"Always nice to have a cheerleader," May said, throwing her head back laughing, "Always good to boost morale."

"I'll be sure to send you free Wheaties and Reeboks. Only the best."

May grinned. "Dad drew the line at beauty pageants. Mom tried to sign me up for Little Miss New York when I was five and he nearly hit the ceiling."

"Big Nick's is awesome," she said, nearly licking her lips. "Best burgers in Manhattan."

"Free Wheaties and Reeboks? Hold on, I need to send out a tweet and tell everyone who my new friend is. When you end up on Dancing With The Stars make sure to give me a shout out as loud as you can!" Mel says.

"Your mom, too?! I thought my mom was the only one. Dad threatened to take me out and get me a tattoo if she did. He slept on the couch for a week, but he got his way in the end." she grinned.

"Then we need to go to Big Nick's. Besides, it's near the track, and the Track team might be practicing. Excuse me while I drool." she says.

"When that happens, I'll get you front row seats. Maybe you'll meet some hot dancer and fall madly in love." May chuckled. She was really enjoying herself.

"Dad threatened to sell all of the good sliver. Not that we really have that much good sliver or anything."

She grinned. "Have you seen the track team boys? I'll be right next to, drooling away."

"Love is overrated. I'll settle for learning the Lambada." Melissa grins. Whatever she expected out of May Parker before they met, she was getting the opposite and more. The girl had a rapid fire wit and she was hilarious!

May reminded her in some ways of her sister, Bree, once they'd gotten close. Dad would be proud to see she was making friends.

"Ouch. Your old man fights dirty, Parker. I'll have to remember to use that one some time." she says of selling the silver.

"Yes, yes I have. I would like a couple of them to see me, too. We should get burgers and go watch them." Melissa says.

"I mean, after we study, of course. I mean, let's not forget why we're here." she says in the most serious tone she can manage, before bursting into laughter again.

"Amen to that," May said with a smile and a wink. She's glad she was assigned to Melissa for a tutoring assignment, and not some bobbleheaded blonde that didn't know her up from her down.

"Dad liked to refer to it as 'fighting smart'." She laughed.

"Burgers and eye candy? Sign me up. And if it's hot out and they practice shirtless-that's just the icing on the cake."

May straightened, putting on her best school matron look. "Yes. We must focus on our studies and become the best students we can be." She said in a pitch-perfect imitation of Doctor Conners. "After all, it's what we learn here in this fine institution today that prepares us for a brighter and better tomorrow!"

Melissa couldn't help herself and broke into fit of laughter that turned a head or two.

"Okay, we start studying tomorrow. Today is getting to know you day." she said, standing up. "Food and hot guys sound like a great end to day, I say."
