Lucas approaches the front gates without hesitation. Upon seeing Chris, he recognized her almost immediately, and decided to take a gamble. Specifically, that they're controlling her cat mind, pushing her to savagery, but part of Apocalypse's mockery would be to, somewhere in there, leave her human mind alone. If he can reach it - and survive meanwhile - he might have a chance.
Even so, he manifests a spear first. A bow was tempting, but somehow he has a feeling that they're going to release her before he can get a shot off, or one that counts enough to be willing to risk the time it would take to switch weapons.
