The job wasn't paying enough to cover the expenses on it, but Abigail Hawk rarely took jobs because of the money. She took them because justice needed answering, and justice definitely needed a helping hand in this one.
In the Old West, the greedy and unmoral would run people off their land so they could buy it up. From what she'd been able to piece together, this wasn't much different. People being forced out of their homes through what looked like highly circumspect business practices, though a lawyer contact of hers had assured her there was nothing overly illegal in the acquisition of the property, at least.
Her position down the street was different than Leo's (who she did not know was there), but it gave her a good look at the building.
Her clients had lived there once, until they'd been forced out upon threats on their lives. They didn't have much, but they'd scraped together some money and she'd agreed to take the case on an extremely generous discount.
She hadn't found much, so she'd gone to the tried and true method of a stakeout.
Now, however, the sound of screams split the night air.
