For those still at the school...
As part of the preparations, easily missed among those coloring eggs and preparing for Easter, inside, there's a still warm breakfast, left in the oven so it would stay heated as people got up. There's all manner of other treats and foods to recognize the day as well.
Cakes made of freshly ground oat and corn flour, ground on a stone mortar and pestle, sweetened with various degrees of honey. Sun-dried fruits and berries. Fresh squeezed juices from the fruits, the juiced husks among the rest of the dried fruits after a bit of sun drying. Edible nuts and seeds dredged in light salt and spice mixtures for tastes ranging from salty to sweet or some mix. Cinnamon and fruit cookies - the winners of the batches he'd been having guinea pigs test for for a while now. Fried chicken that's been seasoned in a buttermilk and spice mix for a day before cooking. Fish from the lake that have been soaking in fruit and cinnamon mix before being wrapped in foil and slow-cooked by being buried under a firepit, just under the layer of coals.
There's no easter eggs, no pastels and fancy services. But the greeting of spring is important to Lucas. So he's made sure to share it with those who remain.
Everyone could use a little renewal about now.
