The City Doesn't Sleep
"Well then, Lady Asleif.." Vincent held the door for her as they exited The Met as it was closing. Thanks to his own carefully mapped route through the exhibits, and both of them being a rather quick study, they'd made it through nearly every gallery in the building. "..are you somewhat intrigued by the mortals of this world and their works now?" He escorted her down the stairs in front of the museum.

For his part, Vincent always enjoyed his visits here. The hall of weapons and armor always particularly held his fascination, as did the Egyptian temple reconstruction. He had something of a fixation on items of war and power.

Asleif's smile was a small one, but a presence all the same. "Most certainly," she agreed.

The Egptian hall had held her interest as well. Her father had often spoken of the gods of Egypt in less than glowing terms, but as far as she could ascertain, they truly knew how to keep their worshipers in-line.

But the day of the gods seemed to have passed from the mortal world. There would be no prayers and sacrifices to Asleif Thorsdottir. A pity.

"Most intriguing indeed. By... some aspects more than others."

There are always other ways to inspire others to cry out for gods. With far greater satisfaction than conquest or managing a religion.

Vincent feigned an innocent smile, shrugging as he offered his hand to lead her down the steps.

"If you're referring to the incident with those overly loud and unruly miscreants suddenly hallucinating that the suit of armor was attacking them... I can only assume they were abusing some mind-altering substance. Such a pity, really."

Asleif was not for nothing of the line of Loki. She enjoyed a good bit of mischief every now and then, especially upon those who deserved it most.

"T'was most impressive that," she agreed as she took his hand. "Thou doth ever surprise me, Vincent."

Vincent smiled, tilting his head. "We are nothing in life if we cannot defy expectations. Although there is some satisfaction in maintaining a reputation of aptitude and skill."

As they reached the bottom of the steps, he glanced around. The city was darkening and truly coming to life. "Shall I avail thee of what delights this city has for you to consume? The tastes lack the staggering richness of the food and drink of Asgard, but the variety is unparalleled."

Asleif nodded. "Though I have 'er been one to forge mine own path, for tonight, I shalt be most pleased to follow where thou wouldst lead."

"Excellent then." Vincent smiles and hails a cab. "I could take us by magical means, but I think thee should garner the full New York experience. Certain things are only appreciated traveling at ground level."

Once the car pulls up, he confirms an address with the driver and opens the door for Asleif.

Hmm. One of those mortal conveyances. Some sort of horseless chariot. An... automobile, yes, that was it. At least Vincent was properly courteous, opening the door for her and such.

She slipped inside and made herself comfortable.

Vincent got in after her, leaving a respectable amount of space, but close enough that their knees might touch if they went around a corner sharply or hit a pot-hole.

Soon enough, they were pulling up to Apple, already filled with a semi-active crowd. Vincent tipped the driver well, then escorted Asleif inside. "Have you ever had spirits besides mead and wine?"

Asleif shook her head, as she cast a look about the interior. Rather impressive, by mortal standards and possessed of far more class than a legion of Asgardian mead halls.

"I cannot say that I have," she said.

Vincent slipped up to the bar, ordering himself a Praying Mantis, and handing a menu to Asleif. "Prepare yourself for diversity, fair lady." He smiled. "I favor the martinis here myself, but they have something for every taste. What generally pleases your palate?"

Asleif gave the menu careful consideration, mulling over the different combinations.

"I hath generally preferred those drinks with a strong concentration of fruit flavoring," she said. She looked over the list. "And what, pray tell, be "Passion Fruit"?"

Vincent chuckles, sipping at his drink as the bartender hands it over. "An exaggeration, but not an unpleasant taste. If you don't mind your fruit having a little bite to it, I can't reccomend the Apple Martini here strongly enough. It's my favorite cocktail, a blended drink that is, and this is my favorite venue for it in the city."

He holds his Praying Mantis towards her. "Would the lady care for a dab of something a bit richer first? Russian spirits, a mint cream that tickles the palate and nose, milk, and chocolate."

Asleif nods in response. "I believe I shall try this "Apple Martini" you suggest. Thou hast not lead me wrongly yet."

She takes the offered drink and takes a sip, which is followed by a small smile. "Quite the concoction, this," she said. "Most... delightful."

"It is never in my intention to mislead a lady." Vincent takes another sip as well, pointedly from the same spot on the glass as her. "But even the best intentions are not infallible. We shall see what the evening brings." He flags down the bartender to give him Asleif's order.

Asleif smiles again, in spite of herself. The expression is not one often found on her face, though this half-mortal, half-god, seems to bring it out in her.

"I do foresee... possibilities," she said, teasingly, before her order was given to her. She took a small sip of it, and a smile of appreciation spread.

"Most delectable," she said.

Vincent smirks. "As the lady is obviously experiencing, indulgence is not enough in itself. One must endure an edge to truly appreciate it."

He rested his head on one hand, examining her. His tone became more relaxed, less rehearsed. "You don't often enjoy yourself like this, do you?" Vincent had made his still short lifetime one of reading others, both by recreation and out of necessity.

Asleif considered a response telling Vincent to mindth his own business, but decided against it.

"Nay. Mine studies oft required a firm hand on mine emotions and mine desires. Mine siblings oft speak of how well I place the "frost" in mine Frost Giant lineage."

She looked him over for a moment. "There have been those who have attempted to crack such, but few have been successful. Thou art numbered among precious few, Vincent Amorason."

Tension. Best not to press that topic too heavily; but first it had to be acknowledged.

"You carry it well, but no-one should deny themselves happiness. Life is too short and often too brutal to be taken too seriously." He smiles genuinely, stirring his drink before sipping at it again.

"It is my honor, fascination, and indeed my pleasure to bear witness to your smile, Lady Asleif. It is far too fetching for you not to bear it more often." He grins.

Asleif sipped again at her own drink.

"Mine thanks," she replied, her smile smaller, but present.

That this stripling half-mortal could stir up such emotions in her... She was thankful her siblings were not here. They might suspect her a changeling.

"'tis a shame mine siblings and I art bound for California," she said. "Wherever that may be."

"And furthermore... while heritage can be a source of pride, what your ancestors might be is immaterial. Your life is your own to make."

Vincent's expression soured momentarily as she mentioned her departure. "The opposite side of the country, traveling westward." An analysis flickered through his mind. No, she was cultured, and intelligent besides. Certainly no 'take advantage of the night' approach. Best to just let things be. There was also something of what he could call a kindred spirit in her.

"I wish you well in your endeavor then, and am glad to have shown you some of the city's delights during your short time here." He pulls a pen from his pocket and writes his number on a napkin. "Should you ever feel like touring it again, please contact me." He smiles. "The distance across the country is inconvenient, but hardly insurmountable for one of my.. talents." He eyed her over the rim of his glass as he downed the rest of it.

"Scant distance, with the proper spell prepared," she agreed. She accepted the napkin, though, and sipped again.

"T'would be easy to take thee up on thine offer. I may yet do just that. 'tis not the Golden Realm, but this city be quite remarkable."

Vincent nodded and smiled pleasantly, tipping the bartender for his drink and ordering himself an appletini as well. "Order anything you like, fair one. I will handle payment."

He paused, something occurring to him. "I know that.. my mother is, while not a villain, not thought well of by the Golden Realm. Need I fear your parents descending upon us in force for consorting with you?"

Asleif chuckled at that. "Nay. Mine choices have e'er been mine own to make. They will respect that, regardless of thine heritage."

She went on, "Though mine time spent with her was but brief, Ammora was one of mine teachers in mine arts. If they did trust mine instruction to her, I doubt they shall trust thee less."

"Then that is one less worry I need bear, and one more freedom I may envy you for." Vincent replies with a lazy smirk as he takes his next drink.

"Let me know if this place begins to bore you, fair one. There are such sights to show you." He winked as he started drinking again.

Eventually, and after several other Manhattan nightspots, Asleif had Vincent return her to Avenger's Mansion.

"I didst have a most enjoyable evening," she told him. "You have earned mine thanks."

Then, rather without warning, she reached out and pulled him close to her, planting a kiss upon his lips.

Vincent was momentarily surprised, but one hand quickly found it's way to her waist, the other resting on the back of her neck. His mind did momentarily arm itself, being sure she wasn't weaving anything. She was his mother's apprentice for whatever amount of time after all.

Once he was at ease, he allowed himself to kiss back, parting his lips slightly.

Definitely a fine evening.

Vincent let out a contented sigh as their lips parted, watching her saunter away.

"Indeed, fair lady. I look forward to it myself." He bows slightly, then waits for her to get inside before departing. Whatever his proclivities might be, his brother hammered chivalry into him.
