Father knows best?
Kassia was getting fidgety.  She hadn't contacted her mother or her sister, Christina, since she'd reconnected with her father.  She'd been very good, obeying her sister Marrina's every word and while she didn't actually count herself on Marrina's team, she kept active and picked up the place a bit as needed.  She made cookies and indulged in cookies, read a ton of books, and watched television.

That was what made her fidgety.  Various news reports of issues at several Frost Industries facilities around the world.  It was weird.  Some of the reports weren't specific enough for Kassia to figure out what facilities were damaged and though they all said no one had been hurt, that didn't mean she believed them.  Tina could have been in one of them working off clock, or even her Mother.  She wanted to call them, or at least Tina, to make sure things were okay.  But Dad had said not to contact them.

Frustrating.

Before she did anything rash, though, she decided to ask Marrina's opinion.  She knocked on her sister's door.

Marrina looked up from the paperwork on her desk at the knock, grateful for the interruption. With the shares of stock on Oracle, Inc., that had been given to her, she felt obliged to keep track of the company's goings on. It did make her head hurt sometimes though.

She really ought to further her education, one way or the other. She wasn't dumb, by any stretch, but yeah. Princesses ought to be educated.

She headed for the door and opened it. "Kassia," she said for a smile. "What's up?"

"I need advice."

Kassie padded into the office and sat down, tucking her feet under her as she chewed a little on her lower lip. Not very Princess--or daughter of Emma Frost-like at all.

"Daddy told me that I shouldn't contact Christina and Mom, but there's been stuff on the news lately that really makes me worry about them. I want to call them, Marrina but I'm pretty sure if I do it will upset Daddy. Seeing as how I just got him back, I don't want to lose him again. I don't know what to do."

Marrina frowned. She'd seen the reports too and had found it all rather curious, but with it all happening outside of Canada, she couldn't justify using Alpha Flight resources to check it out further.

"They're your family," she said, at last. "No matter what your mother's done. But... there's also no telling what your mother might do if she finds out what's going on with you right now too."

"This is true. But at the same time, it's kinda cruel to let her think the worst. I mean, I assume that's what is going on. Dad didn't seem to have calling her to let her know I'm alive high on his priority list."

She nodded. "There's that too. I don't think either of them are exactly making the right choices here."

A frown. She had promised Namor she could watch out for Kassie, keep her safe. Would she be doing that if she let her call her mother?

"I don't know what the right answer here is," she admitted. "But I'll support whatever decision you make."

"Do you think I should talk to Dad first? I dunno, maybe he has already called Mom and it's fine and I really should just sit tight and be quiet until things settle down. How would I even reach Dad, anyway?"

She couldn't go to Atlantis, not like Marrina could. Marrina was a princess; Kassia legally didn't exist.

"I've got a private line to him, if that's what you want to do," Marrina offered. "Only reaches him and nobody else."

"But... I don't think he settled things peacefully like that. He's not exactly know for keeping a cool head."

"I...I should still talk to him first. Maybe he'll surprise us both and have done the peaceful thing." As she thought of what she'd seen on the news, she seriously doubted it. "Marrina? What if Dad is trying to kill my mother?"

Well. That was a sobering thought.

"Then... we talk him out of it," she said, firmly.

If she could pace from a sitting position, she would. As is, she picked at the fine feathers on her ankle wings.

"We need to call him, Marrina. I'm scared now."

She was worried too. Her birth-father had come into her life so recently, but had gone above and beyond the call of duty in making up for lost time. If he was embarking on so ill-chosen a course, she needed to do what she could to steer him off it.

"Me too," Marrina admitted. "Let's do that now."

Namor comes to the viewing screen immediately when he's told that his daughters are calling. Has something happened? Has Emma found them?

"Ah, my darlings. Is everything all right?" he asks. "Kassia, did you receive my gift?"

"Hi, Daddy." Kassia smiled widely at seeing her father. Even if she was wary and confused, seeing him instantly cheered her up. Fourteen years of her life had gone by with out him, after all.

"I did!" -she held up her hand and wiggled her fingers to show him- "It's really beautiful. Thank you." She looked at Marrina for a moment. "Dad...have you seen what's been going on with Frost Industries?"

Marrina kept quiet for the moment. This was Kassia's moment, her question. She'd throw her own weight and opinions in on things when it became necessary, but she wanted to let her sister handle herself for the moment.

Namor's brow furrows a little. His youngest daughter was already aware of what was going on, which likely meant that she'd already told one or both of her sisters.

This would get far more complicated before too long.

"I'm vaguely aware of it, but the spill in the Gulf of Mexico has taken up the kraken's share of my attention. Oracle is working to help British Petroleum address the matter." Namor says, pausing a moment.

"You're worried about your mother, aren't you, my dear?" he asks knowingly.

Kassia nodded.

"I am, Daddy. Really worried. You...you did let her know I'm okay right? And Tina. I'm worried about Tina. She likes to be in the labs when no one else is there. What if something bad happened to her?" Surely Namor hadn't forgotten about Tina.

No, he hadn't forgotten about Tina, but his people hadn't been able to find her thus far. He hoped this meant that she was abroad or just safely elsewhere...and not in one of the buildings he'd had attacked.

"Kassia, your mother has been very busy, and I have to assume it's from everything going on. If I haven't spoken to her by tomorrow, I will go directly to her." he says.

"Christina has also been out of touch, but I will ask your mother about her when I speak with her. Or perhaps I'll call her myself." he says.

"Do you have her phone number?" he asks.

"Marinna? How are things in Canada? Are you and Kassia getting along well?" he asks his eldest daughter.

"Tina lives in New York." Kassia grabbed a piece of paper and a marker off of Marrina's desk and quickly wrote down both numbers and put appropriate names by them before holding them up so her father could see.

She'd wait until Marrina had a chance to talk to say anything else.

"We're doing fine," Marrina assured her father. She was still... unsure, exactly, of what to call him. Dan Smallwood was and would always be "Dad" to her, but...

A question for another time.

"Everyone's made Kassie feel really welcome. And things have been pretty quiet, for the most part."

"I'm glad to hear that. I'm glad that you two have taken to each other so well. I'd love for all of us to have dinner as soon as things have worked themselves out." he says.

"Is there anything else I can do for the two of you? Do you require anything? If I can provide it, I will." he says.

"Dad? Um...this is going to sound weird...but I know you're not really happy with Mom right now so, um...you promise that the issues at Frost are coincidence, right? Just really bad timing? I don't think you'd do anything...but, I know I have a temper and I don't know which side of the family I get it from. Ask Marrina. I got medieval on some cookies that burned."

Worry struck through Kassia, fear that for asking she'd push him away and the instant she said the words, she regretted them, tears already welling up in her big blue eyes.

Well, better Kassia asked it than her. Marrina put a reassuring hand on her sister's shoulder.

"I'm fine, Father," she said. "Just... worried on Kassie's behalf."

The girl was too perceptive by half. He would have to accelerate his timetable to deal with that treacherous bitch before Kassia could question further.

"I understand that neither of you know me very well, so you have the right to ask questions. I want you both to know that I love you more than my own life, and that I would do anything to protect you." he says.

"Neither of you will ever push me away." he says.

"I will try to get in contact with your mother and sister tonight, Kassia. If it's not too late, I'll try to call back. Watch over each other, please." he says.

The connection ends.

Marrina sighed. "That was a complete non-answer," she agreed. "He's hiding something."

She frowned. "You were right. He's probably involved."

"So. Do we investigate on our own or do I call my sister?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]sea_shelly
2010-06-04 03:51 pm UTC (link)
Now that was a good question. Both had their advantages, but calls risked discovery much more quickly.

"I think... we're better off investigating this on our own for now. Keep things under wraps until we have to do otherwise."

"Dad's...probably going to attempt to ground us for life for this. Okay, where do we start?" Kassia wasn't quite sure exactly where she could begin, considering that the idea of ferreting out evil on her father's part was kind of a new idea to her. However, she wasn't to be counted out. She had been raised around Hellfire, after all.

"He can try," Marrina said, on the subject of grounding.

Marrina, on the other hand, had been raised in a small town in Newfoundland by a fishing family. Royalty and subterfuge of this degree were new to her.

"I think we're probably going to have to go to the States," she said. "Start at the source."

"New York City." Kassia moved around to the other side of the desk and took control of the computer. Quickly, she pulled up the Frost International home page. "The facility on the Hudson was the first one attacked. I...could get you access, but I don't know that I should personally go there. If Dad's hiding things from Mom, if I show up on video surveillance it could be a bad idea. But I could get you in. No one would have a clue. Though...mind wearing a wig?"

Marrina nodded. "Good thinking," she said.

"Probably need one," she agreed. "Wig, boots big enough to hide my wings, and I keep my webbing out of sight, I could pull it off."

"I think we can pull it off," Marrina assured her sister. "I've gotten good at recognizing anything overtly Atlantean, anyway. Our father's been insisting I catch up on that kind of thing as quickly as possible."

[info]little_mermaid
2010-06-06 12:02 am UTC (link)
"That's good then. Okay so the plan is collect evidence, then trace it. We go from there. I say we check the facilities attacked all on the Eastern seaboard. That should give us a pretty good idea."

"...he can only kill one of us and get away with it." She smiled. She was only about half serious. "I'll make some calls. The good thing about Dad not knowing I existed for ages means he doesn't really know who all I count as contacts. In a couple of days, we're bound for New York."

(end scene.)
