He cocks his head. "'Mister'?" He then shakes his head sharply. No, mustn't get distracted. This is important.
"Elder Shadow and the other leaders have decided that if we are to ever live peacefully with humans, we need to learn more about them. They asked for someone to stay on the surface longer, and I volunteered."
He fidgets one of his heels. "Only.. it's a little much to just go right out in the middle of them. Our scout did not do well last time. The bad people caught them. You have machines that can make your... your not-normal humans look normal, yes? I thought maybe, if you could please help us, I could stay here, and maybe use the machine to study other places."
He manages a weak smile. "You have so many different humans here, and so much forest nearby, it seemed like a good place to start learning. This place is a school, yes?"
