Mini-Reunion.
Gott in Himmel, this was so weird. Rose had barely gotten a chance to introduce her to anyone yet, and she was already a bit bemused by the foreignness of it all.

But there was another familiar face, once she actually found him.

"Brad! So you are here!"

"Well if it isn't my favorite red-haired princess! I was startin' to think that every thing around here had changed too much to recognize. Not to mention Anastasia and Rose bailed on me. Something about work." Braddock says, getting up to take a knee and bow to the princess.

He always does this, usually in front of people, until she allows him to kiss her hand.

And Brad will be graced with The Eyebrow. She should've known he'd pull this one. And maybe, just maybe her skin sinks in a little more light than usual. But nothing one could ever prove.

She'll hand him that hand, though.

Braddock grins. The Prince of Thieves and Assassins may have to work for it, but he eventually gets his way.

His lips brush her hand before he stands up to look down on her.

"Hello, Princess of Light and Beauty. I really was afraid that being stuck here would mean no more of our adventures. I mean, who would introduce you to dive clubs where inappropriate dancing is the norm and other such wonders...like karaoke?" he grins.

She laughs. "Only you. And you know, I could go for some karaoke. After about 3 pints of Dinkel Acker, maybe."

"There is many an ungentlemanly comment I can make about havin' to get you drunk, Princess, but I'll forego those in order to just ask you...

Did you follow me here? I mean, I know teachin' you to cheat at cards, pick locks, and pick pockets was a lot of fun...but if I'd known you wanted to come with me when I left Ruritania, I'd have taken the country's crown jewel with me.

Oh, and maybe some of those sparklies you all keep in that glass case upstairs, but you know what I mean." he says.

Gretchen smiles. "Completely accidental, liebling. Which I'll be happy to repeat for the National Guard if we ever get home."

"Yeah, we can't get home fast enough. This place is weird. It also seems to be a halfway house for people from other dimensions. The four of us ain't the only ones who've come through here." Braddock says.

"But when we get home, I'll gladly tell the National Guard that we ran away to get married and now I'm bringing you home. Your mother might only sentence me to life in prison, right? Instead of having me tossed off a cliff?" he jokes.

"That's crazy. This sort of thing didn't tend to happen often at home."

She chuckles. "Very reasonable plan, sir."

"See, we come from a place of normal. This place is crazy. I don't think Dad will even believe this story the first time I tell it, though, I think he might be angry at me when we get back.

Gretchen, I had a message to deliver to Anastasia's father." Braddock says, the first note of seriousness to creep into his voice in a long time.

"There's a traitor in the X-Men, and they intend to kill Scott Summers." Braddock finishes. Normally, he's not this open, but Gretchen is the closest thing to a best friend he's got, and he feels bad about failing his mission.

He also couldn't tell Anastasia about it. She'd worry.

Gretchen's nodding and laughing and about to promise to have his back when he says the next part, and she sobers up. As he finishes, she really sobers up.

"And you didn't get the chance..... Anastasia can't know this yet," she says hurriedly.

"How?"

"We're not sure. Mother got word that someone contracted a rogue member of the Hand to take the killing. The Assassins' have a non-aggression pact with the X-Men, as does the Thieves' Guild. So, whoever called the hit is inviting war with my parents to do it.

Of course, if the person inside gets their way, they can blame it on the Guilds and say we've betrayed them." Braddock says.

"If I don't tell Ana, and something happens while we're gone, it'll be my fault. But if I tell her, and we can't get back there, she'll be angry at me. This swamp rat is in a lose-lose, chere." Braddock finishes.

"We'll think of something," she says, biting her lip.

"I just gotta hope my parents don't think I delivered the message and then vanished, like I normally do." Braddock says.

"There's got to be a way to get us back home. I'll find it, Gretchen...even I gotta steal it from some egghead genius around here." he says.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]indigogirl

She nods. "We hope for the best. With four of us gone, it has to be getting around that something unusual's happened. Maybe that'll get people communicating."

She smiled wryly at the last suggestion.

"I sure hope so. Then again, I've been saying I'm going to kidnap and marry all of you for years. I hope they don't all decide I was serious and that I really pulled it off." Braddock jests.

"But I am really glad to see you, Gretchen." he says soberly. "When Ana and Rose told me this was another dimension...I got a little worried about not seeing you again, among others.

I mean, you're my best student. When you pull off some kind of daring heist, I want to be able to point say 'That's my Princess!'" Braddock says.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

And Gretchen manages to laugh again, just a little. "You know a heist would be no fun all by myself."

"No, it wouldn't. Besides, some other enterprising thief might come along and try to steal you. Then I'd have to kill someone and...yeah." Braddock says. Gretchen is his prize pupil, so the idea someone else taking credit for her training irks him.

"So, have you met any of your family around here yet?" Braddock asks.

Then she shook her head. "Not yet. I've apparently got a sister."

"You gonna meet with her? I'm still debatin' on talking to my parents. Besides, this place isn't much fun. I was thinkin' of taking a road trip." Braddock says, a devious grin coming to his face.

"You wanna come with me? We could go down to New Orleans, have some catfish...maybe find a couple of diamonds no one needs and get you something pretty to wear." Braddock suggests.

[info]indigogirl

"No. Hoping to. I looked a few things up when Rose had to leave me alone by the computer. You remember that aristocratic nothing in my parents' stories that she almost pushed into marrying before Dad and the gang crashed the wedding? Turns out she did, here. It's depressing, is what it is."

"Can't say there's no temptation...but then, that's your preferred state of equilibrium, isn't it?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]princeofthieves
2010-07-29 12:40 pm UTC (link)
"Wow. Is this the 'no-fun' version of our world or what?" Braddock asks.

"There's no sin in giving in to temptation, Gretchen. Only in denyin' oneself when temptation appears." Braddock says.

"It's all the Eastern Philosphy my mom made me read, mixed with a healthy dose of Dad's teachings. Someday, I'll have a group of trained people at my command, ready to do your bidding, Princess." Brad smiles.

[info]princeofthieves

"Well, really, a sharp point object is the way to anyone's heart, chere. But I'd rather get to yours without all the mess. I could read you more German poetry.

I promise it won't be like that time last summer. I've been working on my German since then, honest! No one is going to want to kill us for insulting their mother's mother." Braddock assures her.

Braddock hugs Gretchen, memorizing the scent of her hair, and the sound of her voice.

"Hey, if nothing else, I try to keep life interesting. But nothing is interesting if we aren't here to enjoy it, Princess. Try to remember that while I'm gone." Braddock says.

"A few days, unless the Thieves and Assassins' Guilds here want to kill me. The timeframe increases and decreases for each day you don't hear from me." Braddock says.

"I just need to see something familiar, Gretchen. This place looks like Xavier's, but I know it's not.

Maybe I just needs some catfish." he shrugs, giving a half-hearted smile.

"I remember you liking hush puppies, chere." Braddock says.

"The palace kitchen staff still blames you for it, you know."

"Hey, they needed to know how to keep a Princess happy. I excel at this and shared my knowledge. I should get a medal of some kind." Braddock grins.

He smiles brighter at her acceptance of his offer to hang out. He almost asks her to come with him, but he doesn't want to put her in danger when he gets into trouble, which is par for the course with him.

"You gonna be okay here by yourself until I get back?" he asks.

"Take care of yourself."
