He fixed Tina and Chris with his hardest look. "I would lose the attitude if I were you, ladies. I've got a considerable amount of leeway with how I can deal with you."
"But you're right," he said, after letting that sink in. "Though I'm not as ignorant as you might think. The fact of the matter is, my agreement with the scientists here allows them pretty much free reign with their research. My veto power is surprisingly small.
It's why I allowed your group to continue to operate from the moment I became aware of you. Oh, your thoughts are safe enough... but I knew who sent you and why you were here. It was a useful way to kill the project while maintaining my own neutrality. I hadn't anticipated the other team... for which I am grateful that you stopped them."
