Nicolai was still more concerned with what was going on in Symkaria than the other countries. Not being able to going in guns blazing to help was slowly driving him stir crazy. The only thing that was keeping him from doing just that was that his mother had said it was for the good of Symkaria and he knew his mother would never purposely do anything to hurt Symkaria she would rather die.
