David wanted to comfort the older boy. He just didn't have the ability to. He was though good at confirming that this was done willingly.

"Don't worry. We'll get everyone back," David says with confidence. He also reaches out and puts his hand on Corey's shoulder to offer comfort. They had Dad, Misha, and all sorts of people here who wouldn't stop until they got everyone back.
