Re: Three days later
The messenger departed as soon as he'd delivered the envelopes.
The first one is pinned shut with a piece of coral that shatters when pressed upon. In the usual overtones of condescension of nobility, it announces that Lord Kerouac of the third house of Atlantis extends a formal invitation to Princess Marrina, as well as Mason Jeffries "and his lackeys", to meet him for honorably armed single combat before the king and courts of Atlantis. Safe passage is guaranteed for all involved. A death waiver, already signed by Kerouac, is also included. More bluster and ceremony, but still pretty much just a challenge like the others.
The second envelope is an entirely different story.
We have your parents, the humans Madison and Lillian Jeffries. They will be killed if you do not throw the fight against Lord Kerouac. Your defeat must be presented believably. Tell anyone of this, and they will die.
It's type-written, with no discernible scent or markings beyond that of the messenger who carried it. Two sections of hair, one a mix of gray and black, the other chestnut brown, are included; along with a photo of the two unconscious in their living room back in Kitchener.
