"I'm fine." Ronnie says, not turning around right away. She continues fluffing the already-fluffed pillow. Crying in front of Bobby was even worse than crying in general, because it told him that she was weak. Ronnie had always envied her teammates' closeness with their parents.
The only other person she could claim to be close to was Aunt Vernique, whom she saw more than her own father. She'd never even met her mother.
"I'll be back down in a bit. Just need to get the rest of the rooms done and then I need to work on my car again." she says.
"Or maybe I need to buy another one to work on. I figure we've got all that extra space in the garage, so my boys should keep your girls company, right?" she says, trying to sound braver than she feels, though she still doesn't turn around.
