The Bromance is Back, Baby!
Steve was in the gym in the Mansion, putting himself through his paces on the basketball court.  Dribbling the ball, making shots, spinning the ball on his finger, all kinds of stunts.  The metal of his arm gleamed in the light of the gym.

He was using his right arm pretty exclusively for the stunts, even though he was very nearly ambidextrous.  He needed to get his coordination back.

The arm was new, newer than the replacement he'd first come back home with.  Tony Stark had seen to that, putting the best minds he had (including his own) behind the creation of a suitable bionic.  It was loaded down with more options than a Swiss Army Knife, had better tactile sensations that the previous model, and in general was better synced to his body.  When need be, he could activate a pseudo-flesh covering for it.

He threw the ball, sinking it from about half court.  And hella stronger too.

He nodded, impressed with the results.  Getting there, he thought.

Charlie leaned in the doorway of the gym of the basketball court, just watching Steve with a grin on his face.

"So what...I go away for seven months, you get some new roboman arm, and you're suddenly an NBA star? Damn, I miss a lot."

Steve grinned a bit himself, using the moment for levity rather than terrible reflection.

"Seven months?" he said, jokingly. "Amateur. Try two years. And I still got back first."

"Dude, I know there's something you're not telling me." He pointed at his friend's arm. "I'm pretty sure that's not just for decoration."

Steve frowned. "It's... a long story," he said finally.

"Not that long," Steve agreed. "But over food. I'm hungry."

Burgers order, drinks of the table, Steve settled back to begin his story.

"So... it all kinda started back on Anya's birthday. The short version is that some version of me, from another dimension, showed up and killed the Mandarin under SHIELD custody. We tracked him down, big fight, only his dimension hopping gear went haywire. I ended up in another universe."

"Damn," said Charlie when Steve was finished. "You said you were in this other universe for two years, right? Did time pass differently there or something."

Steve shook his head. "Dunno, for sure. I just know when I was finally able to get back, only four months had passed here."

He went on. "The Earth there had been conquered by aliens in the early fifties. Not even really good aliens, like the Kree or the Skrulls. But just good enough to take down an Earth that hadn't had it's heroic age yet. About the only super-hero still around was Gorilla Man.

I fell in with the resistance and started helping them fight as best I could."

He clenched his right fist. "And then it all went pretty horribly wrong."

Charlie gave his friend a small smile. "So we've both had it pretty rough lately, with me hopping all over the timestream trying to save it from Kang, and you being stuck in another dimension trying to free a world from hostile alien invaders...

You can tell we're Avengers, huh? Even if it's not our world, we still have to safe it." He chuckled. "Must be a complex."

"Reckon so," Steve agreed, managing a bit of a smile.

"Anyway... one time out, I got captured giving the rest of the team a chance to escape. The aliens... they tried to get me to give up the location of the others. They tortured me."

He looked down. Outside of Samson, he hadn't spoken to anyone about this in such detail. But Charlie was his best friend. Who else could he tell?

"They tried every trick in the book, and I didn't break. And then... piece by piece, they started cutting."

Charlie just listened to what Steve had say. He'd gone through some stuff on his little dimension hopping trip, like never knowing if they'd come home or not...but he wasn't kidnapped and tormented by hostile aliens.

Steve took a long drink, pushing through his thoughts.

"I didn't break. And my people rescued me a few hours later. I'm pretty sure I was pretty close to dead."

"Thanks, bro."

"So my people got me out of there, patched me up with some bionics, and we kept fighting. Eventually, we scraped together enough tech to drop me back home. On my birthday, of all things. Brought some Avengers back, kicked some ass, and now I'm trying to get my life back together."
