Time travel: not for the faint of heart
The Fantastic Four’s new location was, as it had been last time, in the middle of a busy square. The architecture of the buildings was different, more advanced and with an oriental feel. There was a garden in the center of the square, well cared for and vibrant. Not very far from the square there was a Sphinx. If the unwilling time travelers at first assumed that they were In Egypt, they could not be faulted. However, there was a landmark that would place them in New York City: the Statue of Liberty. At least that was it had been. Now Lady Liberty was transformed, now bearing a striking resemblance to one member of their team: Cassandra Lang.

Kristoff's eyes take in the square. The Sphinx. The statue. The Sphinx.

And one of his arms reaches to wrap more around Cassandra.

"Ohhh shit."

Now that was disturbing on multiple levels.

Andrea momentarily lost her balance, a twitch going across her face.

"There are electronic signals," she said, "but they are... too advanced for my processor to interpret."

The surroundings, however, are a good bit more disturbing than that. "I do not believe this to be good at all."

Vincent cringes at the sight of the edifice. "That's just in poor taste."

Sensing Andrea's discomfort, he moves close to her. "Shut down your data-stream receptors if you think there's any danger of feedback. I'll keep us covered, you just try to stabilize."

A few gestures and words, and the party is shielded from sight.

Almost as soon as they disappeared the policemen of the era, armed and acting more like SWAT teams, had them surrounded. Their guns were pointed at where they had been. Several of them fired. Their guns weren't loaded with bullets but teargas.

Kristoff hand moves quickly to trigger the facescreen and ventilation of his armor, but there's already some effect, and it's hard for him to do much more.

Andrea had barely shut down her receptors when the attack began. While she did require a certain amount of air for cooling cycles on her internal components, she did not truly need to breathe and is thus rather immune to the effects of the gas.

There was already too much gas around them for her to throw up a force-field; she'd trap just as much with them as without.

Instead, orange rocky armor worked its way up her arms and she brought those arms together quickly, as hard as she could, trying to use the shockwave to blow some of it away.

The older Andrea's smile was small and perhaps a little sad. "To be young and technological," she said. "How I sought to understand the world around me, always wondering about my place in it."

"I am different, that I once was," she agreed with her younger self. "And as Vincent said, I was very nearly lost. He risked much for me. Much more than he should have."

The man says nothing, but looks back with his usual calm. "What happened to Cassandra is best discussed with our brother. As for my jewel.." He stroked his Andrea's cheek.

"She was destroyed beyond repair or duplication of her consciousness. I knew magical means to save her, but there was no power within my grasp to grant her a true soul to act upon." He looks at the teenagers. "I was granted a pact with Destiny, when I was on the verge of offering myself to much worse. She granted Andrea a soul, and I fashioned her a golem's body to inhabit." He looks over her fondly. "There have been many improvements... but the cost for the boon was... something very dire."

He looks sad, the first emotion besides mild comfort at Andrea's presence that he has displayed.

On the list of things Andrea considered herself rather unconcerned with, her own mortality was high on the list. Barring truly catastrophic damage, there was little that could be done to her that could not be repaired, eventually.

Or so she had thought.

Her more immediate concern, however, was Vincent. Her Vincent, at any rate. "You must promise me you will never do such a thing. I would not wish you to sacrifice yourself for me."

The Future Andrea's smile and embrace of her Vincent is no less warm or fond.

"You should already know by now you cannot make him promise that. He has always been too self-sacrificing for his own good."

It took about fifteen minutes before the effects of the teargas faded, and even then Cassie still felt drained. Which wasn't that unusual considering her son was...

Ever since she found out she was pregnant, this was exactly what she had feared. It was literally straight out of her worst nightmare.

She, or this version of her, hadn't done enough to protect Scotty from his father. Cassie knew that this Cassie had done everything she could against Kang and had still failed. She knew because it was the same thing she would have done. This could just as easily have been her.

This might be her.

That might be her Scotty.

There was something she needed to do. She needed to talk to this world's Kristoff.

Eventually,
[info]nextgen_misc
2009-08-24 02:22 am UTC (link)
Just two hours before they were scheduled to leave, the time came for the operation. As the time-travellers needed to stay together and out of danger, the members of the underground asked them to stay at the base and help look after the prisoners who would be teleported once out of their containment fields.

And soon they're seeing more worn and scarred and weary versions of familiar, once-friendly faces, drinking the water they're given and hoarsely relating a battle going well. Then a batch relating the arrival of the conqueror. Then a batch who were not certain of anything.
A new arrival is muttering "Vernard was at the front. I heard --" When they teleport out.

It's the very moment they left. After the flash of light fades, Scotty Lang comes sleepily out of the room he was in, looking at his very dirty family.

Kristoff sighed a litle when he saw him. Seeing how the clutched boy was looking at them slightly weirded out at their state, he said, gently. "Things got somewhat...weird, Scotty." A phenomena Scotty is also quite familiar with in terms of broad general principle. "We are not hurt, though." Any details would be Cassandra's right, not his.

Vincent was already visibly relieved to be back in a world that made as much sense as he could hope for. He was still holding Andrea, but moved along to ruffle Scotty's hair.

Andrea's hold on Vincent was no less tight, but she was quite relieved to open herself to the datastream of the modern world again. She was pleased to see that history did not appear to have changed in their absence.

"Yes," she told Scotty. "I am certain you will enjoy it."

In the meantime, however, she required a shower and then a long recharge cycle.
