Affirmative whispers.
The oven door finally opens, and a neighboring drawer with cloths.
"Blackberry pies can be tricky," Mel says as she comes out of the floor. "Can't trust an oven with them if we haven't been introduced." She gets the trey of almond meringue cookies -- good consistency, that's what carefully monitered temperature changes get you -- out and atop the stove. "Sorry, though, we don't have the right ingredients for any of those right now."
