Misha opened the back door to a small mud room. It wasn't locked. Dad operated on the principle that you left your cabin unlocked and stocked in case somebody in need came through and needed shelter and food. Misha suspected it was a holdover from missing memories.
The mudroom opened into a small kitchen area with the basic necessities in a small corner of a larger room with a fireplace and old furniture. Three doors led off the room. One was the front door, the others a bathroom and a bedroom. A simple ladder in the corner led up to a sleeping area in the attic. Dad added it when Misha was old enough to come here with him.
"Go ahead and look around. I'll get the power on. There's enough firewood and kindling on the front porch if you'd like a fire to take the chill off. Matches are on the mantel." With that, he stepped back outside and closed the door behind him.
