Uncomfortable Questions (Anya)
(Takes place around the same time as this scene.)

First, Matt Walker tried setting up an appointment with Anya Stark the old-fashioned way. He called, introduced himself and asked if he could speak to her on a matter of legal importance. When the person on the other end asked if he was a lawyer, and Matt said no, they hung up on him. The second day, he tried again, but pretended to be with one of those gossip magazines. They managed to trip him up rather easily and again, he was hung up on.

The third day, Matt went to the internet. While he couldn't find out exactly where she lived, he /did/ find out that her husband and father both lived in New York, and that her father's company, Stark Industries, was based out of New York. Of course, he couldn't very well wait around and hope she'd so up, and despite his magic, Matt was not interested in rousing Tony Stark's interest. The guy wasn't known to be sane on the best of days.

So it was that Matt concocted the scrying spell and used to it to find out where Anya was at just this moment. He was a New York native, after all, and managed to deduce her location from a few of the background buildings.

A little smooth-talking and a couple of illusions later and Matt was ready to Meet the Bartons.

"Let's hope the apple rolled far away from the crazy tree on this one." Matt mumbles to himself, adjusting his grip on his staff and pushing his hat back on his head. His duster looked appropriately badass for this encounter, though he expected no trouble.

Anya was walking down the sidewalk carrying a few shopping bags, fruits of her shopping endeavor. Steve had some time planned with Charlie this afternoon and Anya had taken advantage of the alone time to get some shopping done. Fall and a new school year was coming after all. Not to mention Vernique had a baby coming who needed things and Anya had a little brother who needed toys.

Shopping done, she was on her way home and was planning on take a long soak in the bathtub.

The six-foot-six individual is waiting in front of her door when she arrives, dressed in all black. His staff is at least six feet tall in itself, and the runes upon it glow with an pale green light.

"Mrs. Barton? I was wondering if you and I might talk a moment. About Austin Caine." Matt says, looking down at her.

"Can I help you with your bags?" he asks politely.

Anya didn't like the vibe she was getting off of this guy. Everything about him said bad news. "No thanks, I have them."

"Austin and I weren't dating, we're only friends and nothing happened between us." That answered most of the questions she got about Austin.

Well, wasn't she just Miss Helpful? If he were a member of the paparazzi, he might be stuck for questions right now.

"Did you know that Mr. Caine is living under an assumed name? I mean, the identity holds up under professional scrutiny, and then some, but Austin Caine isn't just a stage name. It's as though...he's someone else and he's trying to keep people from figuring it out." Matt says.

"Were you aware of any of that, Mrs. Barton?"

"What I know or don't know about Austin Caine is really none of your business mister...?"

"Walker. Matt Walker. I'm a private investigator. And yes, it is. I don't know if you've checked the news lately, but your friend is a person of interest in connection with two mass homicides less than twelve hours apart.

Contrary to what Austin's mother believes, which is that you led her son on and dumped him like trash, I think you care about him. You wouldn't be /not/ telling me so much if you didn't care one way or the other.

But the court of public opinion is ready to try and execute your friend for no other reason than that he's rich and handsome. Those types get away with murder on a daily basis and the Chicago District Attorney would love to put the lie to that one." Matt says, taking a deep breath to shift gears.

"Do you mind if we step inside, Mrs. Barton? I'd hate to have such a delicate conversation where everyone can hear us." Matt says.

"Austin didn't do those things," she said. "I know him and he wouldn't do what they're saying he did."

She sighed. "Fine." She put her hand on a scanner near the door and the lock clicked open. "If you'll follow me."

She sounded certain of herself. Either she'd been sucked in by him and didn't want to admit it...or she was telling the truth as she knew it.

He follows her inside.

"How well would you say you knew him during the time you two were...acquainted? The tabloids paint you two as very close. Is that not true?" he asks.

"Austin and I are close friends, nothing more. We talked a lot and went out a few times as friends. Nothing more. I know him well enough that I know he wouldn't hurt anyone or do what they're accusing him of."

She didn't move far from the doorway. This man was not going to go any farther into her house.

She was very quick to insist that there was "nothing more" between her and Austin Caine than friendship. That usually meant that there was /a lot/ more than just friendship.

He'd seen a lot of unfaithful spouse cases over the years and while Anya Barton didn't seem like the type, from Matt's first impressions...her father wasn't known for his chaste and virtuous ways.

"Well, the good thing is that you are /not/ the first person to say these things to me. His mother also said the same things, as did his brother." Matt says, casting a glace around the room before looking back down to Anya.

"The bad thing is, as I'm sure you've heard, that one of the victims was Austin's ex-girlfriend, Sarah Preston. Did he ever mention her to you?" Matt asks.

"Her parents certainly believe that he's responsible for what happened and they're out for blood. The Maria Stark Foundation hosted a Charity Ball around Christmas, right? Mr. Caine was spotted leaving just as you and your husband arrived. Did Austin ever express any anger over that?" Matt asks.

"Has he mentioned any new or...interesting people in his life recently?"

"No," she said. "He's never mentioned any past girlfriends to me. We talk about Hollywood, computers and cars. We don't really talk about personal lives."

She set her bags down near the door. "Anger? No. Regrets maybe. He has always respected my relationship with my husband, boyfriend at the time, and was kind enough to give us space after my husband returned from missing for four months."

"Like I said, we talk about Hollywood and his movies, cars and computers."

Matt nods as Anya tells him the story of what's between her and Austin Caine. Or not.

"The reason that I came to speak with you is that we checked his bank records; he has a condo in Boston, where I know that you often commute to and from, Miss Barton.

His agent mentioned that Austin said he'd lost some time recently. Didn't know how. One of the homicides the police want to talk to him about involved a cult-like atmosphere. You know how these Hollywood types get. Sometimes it's Scientology, other times it's Clark Gable's ghost giving them stock tips." Matt says.

"His wallet was found at the scene, and he's one of only two people who walked out of that building. If he's in trouble, I'd like to help him, Mrs. Barton. Furthermore, he's pissed off the Hell's Angels, it seems. Those are not guys you want to make trouble with unless you happen to know a few gods or devils a personal level.

Are you sure you haven't heard from him or seen him? You're not doing him any favors by covering for him, if you know where he is." Matt says.

"Excuse me? I've been to his condo once and it was to drop him off. I've never been inside." Anya's voice was taking on a edge. She was about two seconds away from calling security.

"I haven't seen or talked to Mr. Caine since June 16th. He came to pick up a piece of computer equipment I developed for him. I don't know where he is and what he's doing. What I do know is that he would never hurt anyone."

"I apologize if you misunderstood me, Mrs. Barton. I meant to say that you commute to and from Boston, itself, and not Mr. Caine's condo. I'm not trying to accuse you of anything.

But all right. You say you haven't heard from him, and I'll take that." he says, reaching into a pocket of his coat.

He produces a business card and leaves it on a table near the door.

"I've taken up enough of your time tonight. But if Mr. Caine /does/ call you, please contact me. As I said, I want to help him, especially if he's gotten mixed up with the wrong people." Matt says, titling the brim of his at to her.

"I'll show myself out." he says, turning to leave.

Anya picked up the card, glanced at it and then slipped it into a pocket. "I'll think about it," she said coldly. "Good day, Mr. Walker."

Matt leaves the apartment thinking that that interview went about as poorly as it could have. He didn't think Anya was protecting Austin right now, but Matt figured that she would do so if she could.

The best thing he could right now is go back to Chicago and touch base with Karen, Michelle and the rest of the group. They had to find this guy before something else happened.

Once he's down the hall way, Matt vanishes into thin air.
