He fights back against it, magical protections making up for some of the surprise, ending up unable to continue advancing on Fate, needing all his attention to fight the vortex, but isn't being drawn in at the moment either.
And Fate... can feel how near the main portal is getting to allowing the elder god through, the priests continuing in their obscene chants while the group fights the footsoldiers.
