Learning All Over Again (Open)
*WHACK*

*WHACK*

*WHOOSH*

The sword missed the wooden pole on the third swing and Svalin paused for a moment as she went over the third strike in her head. She felt like a five year old who had just picked up a sword. In a way she was. Her right hand had been her primary sword hand and even though she had fought with two swords, she wasn't as skilled with her left hand.

In fact she was learning to fight with her left hand as if she were just learning to fight. Fighting with two swords was not the same as fighting with one so she had to start from the beginning of learning how to fight with her left hand with one sword. Not only the sword, but with an axe, a staff and a hammer. Each weapon was different just as fighting with one sword was much different than fighting with one.

All-Father help her and give her the strength to get through this. Svalin just wanted to be able to protect her wife and son. The thought of not being able to do it and the thought of having to have someone else do it twisted her stomach in a knot.

Twenty plus years of learning how to fight and she had to start all over.

"ARGH!" she yelled and took a swing at the pole with her sword. It wasn't about skill or finesse, it was about hitting something as hard as she could and venting some anger and frustration.

Kael was allowed out of bed, but thanks to the occasional dizzy spell, he had to use a cane to help maintain his balance. He had heard yelling and had hobbled over to see what was happening.

"Oh, Lady Svalin. I apologize, I didn't mean to interrupt you."

The pole was sliced in half and Svalin turned to see Kael. "Apologies art not necessary. Thou didst not interrupt." She gave him a small smile. "How fares thee?"

"Better, thank you." He carefully makes his way over to a seat, using the cane to help him sit down. "Your healer says I should be healthy in a few more days." He frowns. "You know, I have some experience fighting left-handed if you would like aid."

"A sparring partner wouldst be most appreciated," she said. "As wouldst instruction using mine left hand. I art only used to fighting with it when holding two swords and not one."

"I would be happy to, Lady Svalin." He eases himself up and moves over to her. He positions his left hand as if he were holding a sword. "You would get more speed and power if you hold the blade this way. Plus it can disorient opponents unaccustomed to facing an attack from that direction."

"Thank thee," she said. Svalin mirrored his movement and hand position. "Ist this correct?"

"Yes, though you do not need to grip so hard. With a little less force on it, you can more easily get it up for a quick counter. The blow is not strong, but is made more to misdirect an attack rather stop it." He sets the cane down and draws his sword, moving it to his left hand. He gives a demonstration of the maneuver, though in a slower form. "Aside from being a maneuver geared for the left hand, it also a useful tactic for dislodging blows of those stronger than yourself."

Svalin regripped her sword and then repeated the movement that Kael did. "Like that?" she asked.

He nods. "Yes. When the blade hits, there will be a brief opening at the elbow joint. Twist like this," and his arm moves, a sudden movement that angles to where the makeshift attack's arm is. "The blow can cut tendons in the arm, slowing future blows significantly."

Svalin nodded. "It ist a most effective tactic," she said. Svalin did the maneuver again and then again. Practice did make perfect.

"Also, if the enemy is heavily armored, the tactic can still be used, albeit necessary adaption." He lines his feet up. "You must leap to the side and swing the arm around like this, this will bring far more power. The goal is not to wound, but rather to bludgeon the limb, numbing the arm." He leaps a little to the side and brings the sword around in a vicious overhand strike. He shakes his head a little as his vision blurs." Perhaps jumping was a bad idea," he said with a laugh, picking up the cane.

Svalin immediately dropped her sword and picked up his cane for him. "Mayhap thou shouldst take it easy for a little longer."

"Perhaps so," he admits, gratefully taking the cane and sitting back down. "Thank you. I guess the recovery period is grating on me more than expected." He notes the fallen sword. "You learn quickly."

"Thou'rt welcome. Aye. Mine teachers wert not the patient type and didst not suffer those who didst not learn quickly," she said as she picked up her sword. One of those teachers was her own mother. Sif was demanding when it came to teaching her daughter the sword and Svalin recalled many bruises and cuts from those lessons.

"I wanted to be the best in Asgard," Svalin admitted. "It forced me to learn as much as I could and as quickly as possible."

"It shows, your skills are formidable." He's quiet a moment. "Every warrior, no matter how skilled, always has a moment in their life where a crushing injury can occur. You either adapt or die slowly inside. it does you credit that you are doing the former."

"I art doing what I must," she said. "I have a wife and son to protect." She left it at that and didn't go into Solver's importance to Asgard. He was a very small chance of survival for her people and he had to be protected at all times. "I wouldst sooner die than to have someone else do mine duty."

Svalin nodded. "Aye. It wast much the same for me when I first came here. I wanted nothing more than to be in Asgard and protecting it from enemies. In time I came to enjoy being here and now I doth prefer it more. There ist a lot to see and learn and the mortals art most fascinating. I art rather fond of a few."

Svalin just nodded and returned to her practice. There was still hours left of daylight and she would need every minute of it for practice.
