Fortunately, Solver was looking away, engrossed in his juice and the play of light on the kitchen window.
Because as much as it was not Vernique's style to haul off and punch her sister-in-law in the face, it would have been even less so to do while her son was watching.
But there it was, the tiny fist slamming with a crunch into Aslief's jaw. The fractures, of course, would be Vernique's, but the pain doesn't make her scream, just snarl more as she speaks.
"You're damn right I'm mortal. And I'm staying 100-percent mortal! Solver needs somebody who doesn't think that people, even family, are window dressing in the big divine drama!"
