Higher Learning
Vincent knocked at the door to his brother's lab. He'd been carefully rehearsing and mapping out possible turns in the conversation ahead of time, and was in his mind fully prepared. He was about to have to eat some crow, not his favorite concession to make.

"Kristoff? Do you have some time? I wanted to discuss something with you."

Kristoff had the plans for a new esoterically humdrum engine component laid out when he answered the door.

"Certainly, Vincent. What is it?"

Entering, Vincent cleared his throat. "I've come to a certain realization that I've neglected certain... shall we say opportunities over the past few years. You've already helped me rectify one of them, and while I don't mean to invade on your free time now that you're newly married... I can't think of anyone I'd rather ask."

And now he finally gets to the point.

"I'm prepared to scale back my magic lessons with Mistress Jennifer if you'll resume my technological education." He practically blurts it out, to the extent anyone largely raised by Kristoff was able of 'blurting' anything.

Kristoff listens, then raises an eyebrow. He was fairly used to his brother's scientific interest lasting only for brief flares in which he might work on one thing or make one insistent suggestion for which he wouldn't stick around for the careful follow-through.

"You're serious? May I ask what brought this realization about?"

"There are certain people and things I doubt my ability to protect to the fullest they deserve with my current level of proficiency in post-societal level technology." Vincent's reply was crisp and stated firmly.

Ah. Andrea. "I see." He continues carefully. "And how soon do you expect to rectify this situation?"

Yes, very much Andrea.

"Just as I have no intention of abandoning my magical studies, as there will always be more to learn, I believe it can only further myself and my value to the team to expand my scientific knowledge indefinitely."

A pause, before he seems to force himself to say something.

"I'm not going to wander off once something doesn't constantly enthrall me... anymore." He adds the last word with resolve.

Kristoff listens to what Vincent's saying, and what he's not saying. Some of that's a little impressive. Of course, being Vincent, there hasn't actually been a question asked. Being Kristoff, he doesn't bother pointing that out.

"Post-societal is a complicated term," he says conversationally, and then indicates the plans he's working on. "So much advanced technological research can be incorporated for widespread use, if enough care is taken to avoid the capacity for exploitation. Do you see what the intention is here?"

Vincent rolls up his sleeves and moves over to Kristoff's work station, examining a few components after receiving consenting nods.

"My best guess without looking at the overall schematics or your notes would be some transit system revision, most likely for initial deployment in this city's subway system?"

Dr. Vernard smiles and nods. "Yes. These modifications should replace the need for so many monitored feeder stations --" The quantum electric whys and wherefores of how Kristoff accomplished this will be explained with careful and thorough precision. "--And I'm quite pleased that these particular components fit so perfectly to something I've modified based on my armor's recycling systems. The air could always stand to be a little cleaner down there."

Kristoff smiles. "And as they bend the laws of physics cheaply and subtly, rather than in any way likely to be noticed and seized upon, I can feel quite comfortable profiting off their availability. Which is good, as I have been wanting to create a new account for all of Scotty's ongoing and eventual needs."

Vincent tilts his head, something apparently turning in his head. He can already see the details of Kristoff's explanation piecing together in accordance with the components in front of him like jigsaw pieces. "Yes...."

He looks over at his brother. "If I might ask... have you considered any sort of impact sensitivity for the third rail? As a safety measure in case of falls or to thwart suicide-by-current attempts." He furrows his brow. "Inertia dampeners could enable safer short stops of the cars, but I'm not certain about their financial feasibility..." He pauses, then adds a concession. "Or how to construct them." Vincent has always had enough zest for reading to absorb bits and details about the latest major advances, even if he hasn't been educated in their particular intricacies.

"I have. It's not feasible; the draw on the feeder stations would too overwhelming and erratic. Better to focus on system efficiency so the amperage can be lowered and thus be less risky."

Kristoff is proud of Vincent's new willingness to admit things. "Yes, that is both a feasibility concern and raises the issue that intertial dampening in similar settings have been known to cause widespread motion sickness."

"I've always had suspicions that inertia dampening induced motion sickness is largely psychosomatic... people expect to have to adapt to the changes they'd normally experience, but don't. Long-term deployment would be needed for testing...." He trails off. "But that's not what we're discussing."

He clears his throat, loosening his collar. "Would you like help with some of the assembly?"

"It is quite possible that it is psychosomatic, but that possibility does not help unless appropriate countermeasures are thought of. And yes, we digress."

"Eventually, that would be wonderful, thank you." Kristoff genuinely likes the idea of actually working with Vincent on something. "It isn't really at that stage yet at the moment."

Vincent smiles thoughtfully and nods. "I'll need to speak to Mistress Jennifer about adjusting our standing schedule, after which I'll consult with you about a lesson plan."

A pause, followed by a cough. "Thank you."

"Most certainly."

A small smile. "You're welcome, Vincent."
