Halbjorn appears to be letting the serpent gain his position, but its only to set himself up as well. He's not the brightest, but where it comes to combat and tests of strength, Halbjorn is an old hand.
He grabs for the serpent's neck just below its head with both hands as he takes a deep breath.
This will be a test not only of strength, but of endurance - he has no plans to simply try and break free, but to choke the serpent as it crushes him, and the loser will be obvious.
