Things were going well. Giovanna was still getting over the shock that they were actually...dating. And nothing had interfered with the Important Stuff, so far. Now if only the Important Stuff would get somewhere.

Andrew was in his room, quite occupied and not yet near any point where he needed to be interrupted.

Giovanna had just finished showering and dressing after a workout and was combing her hair.

The telephone rang.
"Hello, Giovanna Bennet speaking."

"Hello Miss Bennet. We haven't been formally introduced, so I hope you'll forgive the interruption. My name is Gabriella Santiago, and I believe we have a great deal to talk about. I'm a great fan of Magneto's, and by extension, your father's."

Well, this was interesting. And refreshing, really.
"It's no real interruption, Miss Santiago. It's nice to hear from someone who doesn't think I need to apologize for my family or my country, certainly, but in terms of talking, where would you want to start?"

"In general, I think that Magneto has the right idea. While integration would seem a perfect solution, I don't believe its possible. The fear of the unknown is too deeply rooted in humanity's psyche. Your country, whatever the world thinks, is as good a solution as anyone has been able to come up with, and I felt it important you know that it has its supporters here. As for a place to start, there's a delightful French diner two blocks from your hotel. I'm not a big fan of talking on the phone, and would be honored if you'd let me buy part of Genosha's diplomatic corps a cup of coffee."

"I'll be there in fifteen minutes. See you then."

After they've hung up, Giovanna writes a note, telling Andrew where she'll be and that she won't be long, and slips it under the door, which certainly isn't going to interrupt the Important Stuff he's reading, but will let him know if does need her.

Then she looks over her clothes to make sure she's not wearing anything that would get in the way of a sudden combat situation, and carefully getting her psionic defenses in such perfect order that Father would have a very hard time getting through. She'd like to think she isn't stupid, after all. And the minute she leaves the hotel, she's watching the situation around her very carefully until she gets to the place in question.

While she doesn't look precisely like herself, Gabriella is somewhat similar to her actual appearance when Giovanna gets to the place. Recognizing the woman, she waves her over to the table.
"Miss Bennet, its an honor."

While her defenses, of course, are all still up, Giovanna quickly makes her way over and smiles. "So nice to meet you," she says politely.

Gabriella extends a hand as she looks the woman over. "Please, have a seat. And this one is on me, I insist."

Giovanna returns a perfectly nice just-slightly-callused handshake and then sits.

"If you insist, thank you. Should there be a next time, I'll get it then. Do you live in New York, Miss Santiago?"

"For the time being. My group has taken an interest in somewhat counter-protesting the Purifier movement." She reaches down to a bag laid next to her and slides a folder on the Purifiers across to Giovanna. "I thought this might be of interest to you. We're usually mobile, but recent events have kept us here."

Giovanna listens and nods, and trise not to smile thinking of some of the 'counter-protestors' she'd seen, as problematic as the whole thing apparently was. It was certainly nice that somebody was taking a little action.

"That's understandable considering the extent of what's going on," she says of their lingering in New York. "And thank you very much; I think we'll find it very interesting."

"I imagine you will, though I believe the prince has somewhat mixed views on the entire affair. At least from the little bit of media that ever makes its way out of Genosha. How much do you know about the situations playing out in New York and America in general?"

"He thinks about these things very thoroughly, from a lot of different angles," Giovanna admits.
"We've tried to get as thorough an impression as we can about the Purifier activities, the bombings, and the various other dangerous situations as well as the registration debate."

The mention of registration draws a sour look to Gabriella's face. "Ahh yes, the ongoing political debates. They're just trying to figure out how to frame it without drawing more accusations of human rights violations. Nothing has changed since Magneto's earliest days, and it shows no signs of changing now."

Giovanna nods. "Nobody in Genosha is naive enough to think we can just fix it. We're just going to try not to make this nonsense easy for them, and do whatever we can. Especially good would be anything to facilitate people's getting out, in my opinion, but I know it's all more complicated than that."

"Some things, of course, can change. After all, an island where mutants used to be enslaved is now one of the safest places to be one." She sighs. "But we all know how much polite negotiation had to do with that." The Old Genoshan regime and its recursions would never have gone down if brute, oppressive force hadn't been met with superior force. Again and again.

"Which leads to, potentially, another problem. Because the American and world media don't want anyone to know what kind of civilization has been built in Genosha, its still built up to be some kind of terrible third-world dictatorship. There is almost no means of an American citizen to become a Genoshan citizen, and the powers that be don't want that to change."

Giovanna listens, nods, and frowns. But she's the one who thinks in the seconds and the hours, so she doesn't know what to say that's useful right now.

"I understand that its not something you can touch on, or do something about right away. But emigration is something that I, and a number of my contacts have significant interest in, were there a way to gain Genoshan citizenship, with or without the United States' approval."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Giovanna nods again. "Andrew's been thinking a lot about emigration options from the start of this." The how is trickier, of course. "As well as trying to give, somehow, a better view of what we are and aren't."

"It sounds like you and yours have set yourselves quite a task," she says, legitimately impressed at any apparent attempts to tackle the problems New York's presenting for Their People right now. "Is your phone number anywhere in here?"

She shakes her head, then hands a card across to her. "I wanted to get a sense for you before giving you that. You can contact me at this number. And should you or anyone else on your side of the pond be interested, I'd be very interested in working something out, legally or otherwise, for transporting mutants to a safer haven."

"Thank you. Feel free to call any time. I know it can be tough being in an area where you don't know anyone."
