Lucas stays out of the way of the chieftan. He senses that the spell didn't physically hurt Chris, and he certainly could have, so they must want something. Right now, they lack information. Sure, he could draw a spear and turn this into a fight, but he doesn't have the cat's speed or strength, and that wouldn't get him that information.
So instead, he gets out of the way behind cover, sits down crosslegged and goes into medidation. They made one mistake - they put Chris to sleep within his line of sight.
Lucas crosses worlds and enters Chris' dreams. He can't do any magic there or hurt the cat people, but he can keep her subconscious mind calm, he can find out what the cats want with her, and most importantly, he'll be able to trace where they go and follow when he returns to his body.
