His magic will not harm. Its one of the hard limitations on white magic. For all he can do with it, or is learning to do, he can't force Cracked Claw away from the altar. So he does what it is in his nature to do instead - he alters the ritual.
He reaches out as the blood drips. The wound disappears from Cracked Claw's hand, setting Lucas' hand bleeding instead, and thrusts his own will and a dose of shamanic magic into the rite - he can't stop it, but he might be able to change its intent and demonstrate the will of the spirits instead.
