The charges had faded considerably before they even left her hands. She knows it's not enough, and the new surprise affects her aim in this tricky situation a little as well. As good as her energy reserves normally are, she doesn't seem to be accessing them properly right now.
That witch did something to her, and as she processes that she can't trust her powers she gets out the knife. By that point, the male assailant was already...singing.
While the initial punch is certainly successful, her arm was already moving into a position that happened to partially protect her throat slightly, so it's still possible to catch her breath...
Except that he keeps hitting her. And hitting her. And she hardly has a target. It's hard enough to keep from dropping the knife after the first few blows. Essentially, she's still reacting to previous blows to the face when her knife comes at his arm during the last. She's doing her best to keep her head clear; just needs him to back off for a moment.
