Darkness Rises Again
The mansion was in ruins; it looked like a nuclear bomb had hit it.  What hadn't been outright destroyed on a near-molecular level looked as though it had been burned to cinders.  Little pieces of bone were mixed into the ash and rubble, the last remains of what had been friends and family.  An adamantium skeleton lay useless under one of the larger remaining pieces.

Flames crackled and coalesced around a young woman, taking the general shape of a bird of prey.  Her red hair flowing seemingly of its own accord, a satisfied, wicked smile worked its way across her face.  "You are the last," she said, her voice echoing in their minds even as she spoke.  "The last of the X-Men, the last of those I once called friends."

She made a small hand gesture, painfully tightening the psionic bonds around the few surviving X-Men.  "You sought to cage me, to make me less than I was.  But the Phoenix is eternal, power incarnate.  You simple mutants could never have defeated me."

She paused, placing a finger to her chin in thoughtful consideration.  "The one question is whether to simply kill you now, slowly and painfully, or let you struggle and fight for your survival?  Or I suppose I could let you be...  You'll still die, of course, when I consume your sun... but that does lack the immediate satisfaction."

"What to do, what to do...?"

The scene he comes into is a nightmare. The scent of death and smoke is strong, and he can't help but recognize the sight. and then he sees the phoenix.

"Rachel?"

Her expression waved for a minute, her voice and features softening. "Lucas? But I..."

The hardness and fire returned. "Hmph. Apparently, I did not do a good enough job killing you."

"You are a force of nature, but one that is out of balance. This is not your nature. I am not afraid of death, least of all by a force of my mother the Earth and my father the Sky. But you should come back into balance... Rachel, the Phoenix is a part of you, a part of your family, but its nature is renewal, not destruction. Do not try to fight all of it... help the Phoenix remember what it is. You are still the host, it still needs you, and you can still influence it." he replies, facing the massive bird calmly.

The expression softened again, to one of fear and worry.

"Oh God, Lucas... I... it killed everyone..."

He extends a hand towards her. "No it didn't. It has the power to, but only if you let it rule you. Your mind is still your own, and it needs its host's guidance. Think hard, Rachel... the Phoenix, uncorrupted, is a force for renewal, rebirth... it has been the symbol of that for thousands of years. If you harness its power, let it go where it leads naturally, guide that power gently... it can rebuild all of this, remake it. But you need to lead it there."

Rachel took his hand, tentatively. "I'm... I'm afraid, Lucas. Dark Phoenix ate suns..."

He keeps hold of her hand confidently. "Of course you're afraid. Your line was chosen for an awesome responsibility, that's something to be respected. But the Dark Phoenix was something tainted, due to Mastermind and others. Its not the Phoenix. And you were still chosen for a reason. You're stronger than you know."

The flames around Rachel had largely faded, down to just a small shimmering of power.

"Always been afraid of being stronger," she said, quietly. "Even when I complained about it, been glad I wasn't as powerful as Mom or Nathan.

"Think I've been holding myself back."

"Its one thing to be afraid of power. Healthy sometimes. But its a terrible thing to be afraid of yourself. There's risks, but you ought to try and get to know the part of you touched by the Phoenix legacy... if you're working together, you're that much more capable of resisting corrupting influences like the Dark Phoenix."

The flames vanished to a single glowing Phoenix emblem floating in front of her eye.

"You're right," she said, and she stood a little taller, a little more confidently. "This is a part of me, a part of who I am. I can't deny that anymore."

He nods. "It won't always be a pleasant part of you, but there is some gift to it as well. Look around you- you're a force for renewal - you can fix this."

The emblem, a psionic manifestation, flared. It would always show up when she used her powers for more than basic, low-level manifestations from now on.

Little by little, things started to come back together. The mansion was repaired, the piles of ash gone... It was all as it should have been.

"I... did it!"

"Of course you did. I knew you could."
The drain was gone here as well. He began to fade from the dream.
