Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Walden knew it was probably a little too soon for him to really be thinking about switching to a school closer to where Romey lived, but he was top of his class at home and he'd been invited to check out some more prestigious colleges than the one he was currently enrolled in. There was nothing wrong with going to London and checking out an open house, especially when it met he'd be able to surprise Romy with a visit and see if she was as into him as the texting and everything suggested.

He showed up at the college, glancing around at the boards they had set up talking about student success rates and how many people got into top ten schools, but was distracted by a familiar face. One he didn't really get along with, but they were looking at each other and it just seemed awkward not to say anything. Walden cleared his throat and walked over to Pyxis. "Hello."

Walden didn't know why Pyxis was so determined to make him dislike his girlfriend, or think less of her, or whatever it was she was trying to do. "No," he said. "Being biased matters when you talk about her at all. You keep talking about Romy's flaws like you think I don't realize that she's a human being and not a perfect angel."

He shook his head. "I'm going to leave," he said. "And Romy and I don't talk about you when we talk. We have other things on our mind. The only time you've come up in conversation is the day we met, after you woke me up and then yelled at me."

Pyxis looked back at Walden for a moment, then shrugged and stood up. "It's probably best that we're not friends anyway. I don't need anymore problems than I already have. And being friends with you would be a hassle."

She tossed the money on the table and grabbed her burger before the server could bring it over. "I'll take it to go. I made the mistake of eating lunch with someone who doesn't like me."

Walden rolled his eyes at Pyxis. Honestly, he could see why Romy had a problem with her. She didn't seem to be willing to take anything on and admit that things could be her fault. "If that's what you want to think. I'm fine with it. I don't think we'd get along."

He grabbed his stuff from the school. He'd just get something to eat in their cafeteria. "I'll probably see you around. Apparently we're both thinking about going to the same school."

Pyxis felt bummed out as she ate her burger alone, walking towards where the school was. She had time to look around later. It was an all day event.

She was doing her best not to cry as she sat down on one of the benches, blinking to stop the tears. The truth was, she didn't have very many friends. She had Lavinia and Rider and that was it. Everyone else had their reasons for not wanting to be around her. Maybe she was a horrible person. Maybe Romy was right about her.

There had been a part of her that thought that she and Walden may actually be able to get along. That he'd want to be her friend too. But, she was stupid to think that. He was Romy's boyfriend. And she really hadn't been trying to put down Romy. She'd just been trying to warn him. She finally let herself start to cry, bringing her knees up to her chest as she chewed at her burger.

Walden felt kind of bad for running out on Pyxis in the middle of lunch, but at the same time, she'd been the one who wouldn't stop saying bad things about his girlfriend, even when he'd asked her to. What had Pyxis expected him to do? Normally Walden didn't fight with anyone. Meeting someone would could upset him was a new experience.

He was frowning to himself as he walked around outside the school, eating a vegetarian sausage roll, when he saw Pyxis curled up on the bleachers, looking like she was crying. He hesitated for a moment, then made his way over to her. "Pyxis?" Walden sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Did our argument really upset you that much?"

Pyxis looked up at Walden when he came over to where she was. She immediately reached up and rubbed at her eyes, trying to wipe the wetness from them. She shook her head and looked away from him.

"No. Of course not." She told him quickly, angrily. "Fuck off. I'm not crying."

Walden sighed, leaning against the bleachers beside Pyxis. "I'm sorry," he told her. "I didn't mean to upset you." He dug around in his bag, pulling out one of the granola bars he had with him and offering it to her. "They're organic. Hazelnut dark chocolate."

He moved up the bleachers, sitting beside her. "I know you're not crying," Walden said, even though it was obvious she was. "But I don't think there's anything wrong with crying when you need to either. It's cathartic."

"Don't give me that hippie bullshit." Pyxis frowned at him, then snorted. "And keep your granola bar. It's fine. I don't need it. You'll probably get hungry on your train ride home."

She chewed at her bottom lip and sighed. "I don't have a lot of friends." Pyxis told him as she looked away from him. "Just Lavinia and Rider. Most of the other people in my friend circle like Romy. And because of that, they don't really associate with me. They think I'm some whore who sleeps around all the time. And you know what? I'm not. I've only been with Rider. Which is fine. I love Rider, just not in the way I should as his girlfriend. But, he's in love with Romy. So he's kind of emotionally unavailable to me anyway. You know?"

Walden tucked the granola bar away, watching Pyxis carefully. He wasn't sure why she'd chose to confide in him, but he didn't want to let her down. "I know," he said. "I know it can be hard. I'm big so people assume I'm scary even though I'm not. I made friends with Dudley and Piers because they wanted me to be this tough guy who beat up kids with them, but mostly I try and get them to talk about their feelings and insecurities and why they feel compelled to bully other kids."

He pat Pyxis on the back. "Dudley has a weight problem and Piers's father is absent most of the time. You should open up with your friends, Pyxis. And if they want to believe rumours someone else tells them instead of believing what they see when you're in front of them, then maybe they don't deserve you."

"No one deserves me." Pyxis pointed out, looking back at Walden. "I'm kind of a nuisance to put up with. I wouldn't want to burden anyone by forcing myself into their life. Rider likes the torture."

She ran a hand through her hair, then leaned back against the wall and sighed. "I don't have another choice, you know." She looked up at him. "I have to go to this school. It's the best."

"So you should go to this school," Walden said, shrugging. "Are you telling me you need to go here because you think if I'm here too it'll be too difficult for you?" He didn't like the idea that he could make things so difficult for someone else. He was supposed to be one of the good guys.

"I won't bother you if we both end up going here. Honestly, I'm happy going someplace closer to home, but I sort of want the chance to get to know my biological father and my brothers better without hurting my mother's feelings," Walden said. "She was a little worried about me visiting him."

"No. I'm just trying to cut away from my depressing life and talk about something else." Pyxis admitted as she looked back at Walden. She sighed softly and looked up at him, chewing at her bottom lip.

"You deserve to get to know your Dad. He's fantastic." Pyxis admitted. "I wish he was my dad. My dad is such a pussy."

"I'm sure your dad isn't that big a pussy," Walden said, giving Pyxis a soft smile. "I really like my father so far. He seems... great, actually. He's great with his other kids. You-Know-Who adores him."

He reached up and ruffled Pyxis's hair. "They have a campus pub. Why don't you like me buy you a beer? That'll help you feel better."

Pyxis leaned against Walden for a moment, then snorted. "I do like beer." She told him and stood up, picking up her bag. She stuffed the folder and the rest of her burger into it, then looked at him.

"Just so you know, it's going to take more than a beer to make me happy." Pyxis informed him. "You can buy me one. I'll buy the shots."

"Shots?" Walden repeated, with some trepidation. "I don't really... I mean, I'm not a big drinker. I can handle my beer. Look at me." He stood up, towering above her even though he was lower down on the bleachers than she was. "But I don't usually have any hard alcohol."

He patted Pyxis on the back. "I'll try a shot. Just for you. Since I'm trying to cheer you up."

Pyxis smiled as she walked into the pub and headed straight to the bar. She was tugging Walden along behind her. "I need to beers and six shots." She told the man there, then sat on one of the stools.

She smiled at Walden. "I you only want one shot, that's fine. I'll down the others."

"I can't let you drink five shots," Walden said, eying them when they were delivered. He wasn't sure he wanted to do three of them, but maybe it wouldn't be so bad. "I'm going to do my best."

He took a sip of his beer and then took one of the shots. "Do you want to do them together?" he asked her, turning it around in his hand. "It doesn't look that bad."

Pyxis snorted at that. "You're a big bloke. You shouldn't get drunk too fast." She picked up her drink and counted down to one, then tilted it back, then two more and looked at Walden, lifting her arms up in the air.

"Woooooooooooooo!" She laughed and ran her eyes over him. "Drink up, Macnair. Don't let a girl beat you at something."

Walden downed the shot and cringed at the way it burned all the way down his throat. He coughed as he set the glass down, chasing it with some beer. "It feels warm in my stomach."

He eyed the next two. "I don't get why people do shots at all." He felt pretty good though. Pyxis was right. He was so big. They wouldn't hit him that hard. "All right," he said. "Let's try this again."

Pyxis laughed at that and bumped her shoulder against Walden's. "It's not so bad. You just have to get used to it." She promised him, then had them make another line of drinks for them.

"Alright, Macnair. On the count of three." She told him, then pounded her fist on the bar as she counted down. Grabbing the drinks, she downed one after the other and let out a laugh.

Walden went a lot slower than Pyxis, taking the drinks one at a time and cringing a little after he swallowed each shot. He wiped his mouth off with the back of his hand, giving her a shaky smile. "I'm not as good at this as you are."

He took another sip of his beer and laughed, feeling himself start to relax. "This... Geez." Walden laughed. "I don't think I'm as good at holding my liquor as I thought I was."

Pyxis couldn't help but grin at Walden. He was so dorky and a bleeding heart. Seeing him grinning while drunk was kind of amusing. She reached up and ruffled his curls, then sat back and pulled off her jacket.

"It's hot in here." She told him, adjusting her tank top. She picked up her beer and leaned against the bar. "Tell me more about yourself, Mister Macnair. What do I need to know about you?"

Walden didn't think it was particularly hot, but Pyxis's boobs were... They were very big and he was only human and they were right there. He pulled his eyes off them with some effort, looking up at her face. "I... I don't know. I like cats. You know I want to go into teaching or politics and that I'm a vegetarian."

He took another sip of his beer, shrugging. "I'm pretty boring. I study a lot. I want to get into a good school and make my mum and nan proud, you know?"

"Come on. There has to be something about you that isn't boring." Pyxis looked him over carefully and arched a brow. "You're a Macnair. All Macnair's have secrets. So you have to have something."

She hummed thoughtfully. "Like your cousin Radley. He's shagging his half brother. Rooney is in love with his best friend. Rider is in love with his best friend too." She paused. "Your Dad does a porn show that no one knows about. I stumbled onto it one day. I bet you'd look really nice in tight, red undies."
