Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Draco wasn't sure what the etiquette around being in a secret relationship with one of your best friends was. There were some things he was clear on, like that he definitely couldn't try and hold Merlin's hand or anything in public, but was he allowed to tell some people? People like Pansy, who wouldn't tell anyone except maybe Thoreau? Or Romy? Romy could keep a secret too. He glanced at Merlin sitting beside him, and then at Thoreau, who was talking about some boy Romy'd met who'd swept her off her feet. At least he didn't have to hang out with his ex anymore. He let his hand drop under the table in the upscale pub they were hanging out in and hooked his fingers with Merlin's.

Thoreau knew he should be the last one to criticize someone for going after someone who was, more of less, a step-sibling, considering his extracurricular activities, but he loved Romy he did not get this at all. "He looks just like our step-dad," he said, shaking his head and then accepting the beer and chips that the waiter delivered to their table, wrapping an arm around Pansy's shoulder and pushing his chips towards her so she could steal some. "I mean, identical. I don't get it."

"You've got to stop being so jealous. You're the one who was with boys." Merlin pointed out with a frown, looking Draco over. "I was with one boy and all he did was blow me."

"Thoreau. Stop. I-" Pansy was cut off by what Theodore was saying. "Excuse me?" She arched a brow. "What do you mean, my looks are just fine? I'm gorgeous and you're an idiot if you think I'm just fine." She got up from the table to storm off.

"I didn't know that," Draco said. "All I knew was that you told me you couldn't be gay and then I walked in on you with some boy in your bedroom." He played with the buttons on Merlin's shirt. "I know the other boys I was with didn't mean anything to me. I don't know anything about the people you were with."

Theodore didn't know what Pansy's problem was, but he did know what Thoreau was looking at him like he might cut of his head if he didn't follow her moody ass out of the room. Theo sighed, getting to his feet and chasing Pansy as she stormed off. "I wasn't calling you ugly," he told her.

"I wasn't with anyone else. I dated a girl once. I didn't tell anyone about her." Merlin shrugged, looking Draco over. "But, I didn't like it. So I stopped. That's it."

"I didn't say you were calling me ugly. You were calling me mediocre." Pansy told him as she turned around to look at him. "I'm so tired of people not appreciating me. And I'm not going to stand around and let a stranger do it."

"You dated a girl?" Draco didn't like the sound of that either. "Who?" he asked. "For how long?" It wasn't his fault he was jealous. Merlin was the one who'd made Draco fall for him in the first place.

"Jesus Christ." Theodore frowned down at Pansy. "I wasn't calling you mediocre either. I was saying looks had nothing to do with the way I was speaking to you. Obviously you know you're stunning. You're throwing it in my face now."

Merlin rolled his eyes at Draco and leaned in to kiss him deeply. He pressed close to Draco for a long moment, then pulled away. "Come along, Malfoy. We should get back to eating."

Pansy wanted to hurl more insults and bicker more, but Theodore had said she was stunning. "I'm not.. throwing it in your face." She shook her head. "Shut up."

Draco didn't want the conversation to end there, but after eying Merlin for a moment he gave up. "Okay, fine," he agreed, sighing. "Let's go eat and I'll pretend like I'm not jealous that you dated a girl."

Theo hummed doubtfully. "So you didn't just insist that you were beautiful and storm off from the table because you misunderstood what I was saying to you?" he asked. "Because I'm fairly certain that's what just happened between the two of us."

"That's exactly what we're going to do." Merlin laughed softly at Draco and squeezed his hand, letting go of it after they left the bathroom. "She wasn't important anyway."

Pansy gave Theodore an apologetic look. "I'm a bit defensive about it." She admitted. "People tend to like our friend Romy more than they like me."

Draco hummed doubtfully. "She wasn't important, but you won't tell me her name." He walked back over to the table, where Thoreau was sitting alone with a piece of cheesecake obviously ordered by Pansy. "Where did Pansy and Merlin's friend go?" he asked.

"They were fighting and Pansy left, but Theo chased her," Thoreau said, gesturing to the corner the two of them were standing in. He looked Merlin and Draco over and raised an eyebrow. "Merlin, your hair is a bit mussed."

"Romy? I know her," Theodore said, nodding. "Thoreau's sister." He looked Pansy over and then shrugged. "I prefer your looks to hers. You seem more lady-like than she does. She's not really my type."

Merlin frowned at that and reached up to fix his hair. "Draco ruffled it in the bathroom." He told him. "When I was telling him about a girl I dated. I think he called me a scamp too."

"That's because she was raised by behemoths." Pansy shrugged, looking Theodore over. "I've been trained to be a lady. A girl has to keep a certain grace, I believe."

"You dated a girl?" Thoreau's eyebrows shot higher and he glanced between Merlin and Draco, trying to figure out if he was getting the truth out of them. "How was that?" he asked. "Who was it? Anyone we know?"

"He wouldn't tell me," Draco said, giving Merlin a suspicious look. "But apparently it happened when he and I were fighting last year."

Theodore laughed at that. "I don't mind Romy's family, even if they are massive. They don't come out to many of the functions the other Lestranges have, now that they're old enough to talk their way out of it. Lucky them."

"Her name isn't important." Merlin informed the both of them, hoping to put an end to their suspicions. The last thing he wanted to tell his friends was that he'd dated a girl like Hermione Granger. "Should we rescue Pansy?"

"You're the same age." Pansy told him, looking him over. "You could try to get out of them."

Thoreau looked at Pansy and Theo. "Does she need rescuing?" he asked. "They don't look like they're fighting anymore. You're really not going to tell us her name?"

Theodore shrugged. "Going to those sorts of functions can only help me later in life," he said. "There's no point in skipping them and missing an opportunity to make connections that might come in handy when I'm older."

Merlin grumbled to himself. If he told them the name, then Draco was going to be even more jealous and hate her for no good reason. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Hermione."

Pansy thought about that and nodded. "I'm lucky enough to be invited to the Malfoy events. They're important as well. Very important, I think. They wanted to marry me to Draco, but he turned out to be gay. Narcissa still likes the thought of it, but she'd never make her son marry someone he doesn't care about."

"Hermione Granger?" Draco frowned at that. Merlin could have dated someone a lot hotter than that. "You should have tried for Romy or Pansy or something. You're too hot for her."

Thoreau agreed with Draco, but gay men who dated women also tended to focus on personality a lot more than straight guys did. He eyed Merlin for a moment, then shifted his chair so he was closer to the other boy. "You are hot," he agreed, reaching up and touching Merlin's hair, smiling at him. "Hermione's nice though. She's smart."

Theodore laughed at that. "Parents of people in our position are always match-making their toddlers," he said, shaking his head. "That sort of thing has always amused me. My parents never tried to force me on some girl. Not that I remember, anyway. It's more of a mother thing to do and she died when I was quite young."

What was Thoreau doing? Touching his hair like that and smiling and... moving closer. He laughed a bit and looked back at Thoreau, trying not to back away. If he did, it would make him look insecure with his sexuality. "I'm not too hot for her. Hermione's great."

Pansy frowned at that and touched Theodore's hand. "I'm sorry. That must be hard on you." She told him, squeezing his hand in her own. "Do you want mine? She's a tyrant."

"Yeah, well, you always were the kind of guy who cared about a girl's brains, right? You're smart and sweet." Thoreau glanced down at Merlin's lips briefly. "It's Hermione's loss, right? You're a catch for anyone."

Draco did not like this one bit. What did Thoreau think he was doing and when had he figured out that Merlin was gay? "Yes, thank you. Merlin knows his own self-worth, Thoreau," he said loudly, trying not to put a hand on Merlin's thigh to show ownership.

Theodore laughed at that, but it was good to know pansy wasn't immune to talk about his dead mother. It tended to make girls like him more. "My father and I are used to not having her around now. It's been years."

Merlin felt very confused. He pulled away from Thoreau a bit and laughed. "Yeah. Her loss, I suppose." He nodded. "Why are you feeling me up, Reau?"

"Well. The offer stands." Pansy informed him. "You can have my mother. She's very... insistent about things. Like me marrying rich and staying under a certain weight."

Thoreau let his hand drop, shrugging and quirking an eyebrow at Merlin. "I can hope you'll turn one day, can't I? You're cute. I like cute boys." And he was pretty sure Merlin was gay now.

Theo raised an eyebrow at that. "She sound awful," he said. "My father's keen on getting me to marry young, but he doesn't care what I weigh. If you have enough money, it doesn't really matter what you look like."

"Right." Merlin nodded and then cleared his throat. "Today is not that day. So stop hitting on me. You're not my type, anyway."

Pansy glanced at the table for a moment and shrugged. "You should come back to the table. And have some cheesecake. This place has some of the best in London."

Draco did his best not to sneer at Thoreau when Merlin shot him down. "Honestly, Thoreau, it's not like you don't know many men who are actually gay," he said, shaking his head. "Don't be predatory. You're giving us a bad reputation." He put his hand on Merlin's knee under the table.

Thoreau laughed at that. "All right, I'll stop flirting with Merlin," he promised. "We all know that if he was going to turn for any boy it would be you anyway, Draco."

Theodore nodded, touching the small of Pansy's back. "That sounds like an excellent idea," he agreed, smiling at her. "Let's go back over to your friends." He led the way to the table, pulling Pansy's chair out for her so she could take a seat.

Merlin cleared his throat. "But, I'm not gay." He said as firmly as he could without sounding too insistent on his heterosexuality. "I see you've made it back, Theodore."

Pansy settled on the opposite side of Theodore, leaning against Draco. "Do you want some of my cheesecake? What's wrong?"

Theodore nodded, picking up his beer and taking a long drink from it. "You're back too. I've been getting to know some of your other friends."

Draco looked down at Pansy and smiled. "I'll steal some of your cheesecake," he agreed, picking up his fork. "I don't know if something's wrong. It's just weird watching Thoreau flirt with Merlin. Merlin is straight."

"Oh yeah?" Merlin asked as he took a bite of chocolate cake that had been delivered for him. "And how did that go for you? She wasn't too harsh, was she?"

Pansy laughed softly at that and shook her head. "No he isn't, Draco. You and I both know that. You especially. Don't think you can keep secrets from me. You never have before."
